Have you ever found it hard to look away from a watercolor painting and your eyes are just moving around the scene in a loop?
The reason certain paintings have this enthralling effect on a viewer is because the artist has created a balanced, engaging composition. With great composition, a watercolor artist can emphasize a message, convey a mood, elicit a feeling, and engage the viewer.
But how do we accomplish it? What techniques can we use to achieve this intrigue and interest in our paintings?
In this week’s video, I share three composition secrets to help you create captivating paintings. They are the principles I remind myself of most as I paint. Whether you’re a beginner or have been painting a while, these tips will help you refine your composition and engage your viewers.
Until next time - keep working, keep practicing and keep moving forward!

I have used eye tracking for years to analyze and improve my quilts and to help me crop photos, so I really appreciate you applying it to watercolor. A couple more things that can help create a stronger, more captivating composition ... western readers' eyes are trained to track left to right, top to bottom and humans automatically follow eye lines to see what it is a person or critter is looking at.

I get so much out of these short videos focusing on a few related tips or techniques. (Your longer demos are wonderful as well!) I have recently returned to watercolor after almost 3 years due to an injury and surgery that made painting impossible. I decided to turn this long break from painting into an opportunity to come back to it with a fresh, new, mindful approach. Thanks to you I think I'm making progress.

Thank you so much for sharing your experience! Composition in painting is something I as a beginner have no experience with at all. I will definitely look at my paintings differently from now on!

It’s amazing to see your progress since your earlier videos. Wow! I am pretty new to your channel and you’re such an inspiring instructor. I’ve already rewatched a few videos and I’m planning to take the plunge on a few brushes you recommended. Thanks for inspiring me to be a better artist!! Can I ask, how much do you practice? I saw in your site that you started 7 years ago (maybe it’s not updated?) but you have the skill of someone who has been painting a lifetime. And it’s so inspiring. I am curious how many hours a week you put in to practice since you started. Thanks!!
