This was one of the most comprehensive presentations about composition that I have seen or read. It's one thing to read about design, it's another to have someone point it out. Thank you

You have a roo 😄! Thank you so very much, sir, for your clear and concise descriptions of good compositional design. For the longest time I couldn’t seem to grasp the concept of eye movement through a painting. I think if I had had something like this video way back when, I would have caught on sooner 😊. Thanks again

Thanks for watching, Good to have painters from all over the world
Great video, Phil, and I appreciate you sharing the work of these painters, most of whom I've never heard of. The painting @ 24:00 was a great representation of Tonalism, so I double-checked, and he (Emile Carlson) is listed in David Cleveland's comprehensive book on American Tonalism. I purchased the 3rd edition last year, and cannot recommend it highly enough for all landscape painters. I read it cover-to-cover over the course of a couple of months. Anyway, this video is timely for me, as I'm currently re-reading Payne's Composition of Outdoor Painting, and your detailed analysis of the compositional elements of these wonderful paintings ties right in to Payne's discussion of balance, emphasis, shape, and movement within a painting. It's gotten me to spend more time thinking about being even more mindful about focal areas, directional movement, and massing shapes and values in my own paintings. I found your channel just a couple of weeks ago, and it's fantastic! I have been painting w/ pastels (studio & plein air; southern UT/CO plateau being my favorite subjects) for the past 11 years, and am getting back into oil painting in my studio, with the goal to start painting w/ oils on location when it is warm enough for me to paint outside. Your channel has been hugely informative to that end, and maybe at some point I'll be able to afford to take a workshop with you 👍🏻.

Thanks Sonya, Southern Utah is a great place to paint. Have fun!
Great video! I’m looking for a book or course of study that looks at old master landscape paintings and deconstructs their composition just like you do in this video. Do you know if any books like this? Thanks!

I find/feel how my eyes enter a painting depends upon the height at which the painting is hung.

This composition advice is for people who can’t see what is beautiful so they have to theorize it. I’m wondering why they would become an artist.

No matter the level of artistic ability, most of us strive to improve our work and grow. Desire to become better is key to all who become better craftsman, no matter the field. Don't we all want to get better at whatever we are doing?
