3 Jeff LaBar Licks From 1987

Музыка

Here's the next episode of Three-For-All with 3 Jeff LaBar Licks From 1987. As I mentioned in this video, I was shocked by the news that hit last night about Jeff's passing and decided to create this episode as a tribute to him and his fiery guitar style.
I saw Cinderella live on the Night Songs tour as a preteen, and while I can't remember the headliner or what happened after they rocked their set - I do remember watching Jeff like a hawk in the crowd and their set completely blew me away. It was at that concert when I decided to take the guitar seriously and try to form or join a band. I'm forever grateful for that early memory and jolt of inspiration, so I wanted to make this lesson as a tribute to Jeff in remembrance of that night he rocked my face off with Cinderella back in the day.
This lesson features some impressive licks/ideas from a live solo Jeff performed in Tokyo, Japan in 1987, and reveals a dark and exotic side to his playing, as the majority of these ideas revolve around E harmonic minor and B Phrygian dominant and shift between these two related tonalities. The licks presented here include a position-shifting idea that ends with some crafty neighbor-tone movements, an exotic phrase that coasts between two positions on the neck, an accelerando phrase that will boost your picking/fretting skills, an exotic tapping idea, and more!
Give this episode a view, leave some comments/feedback, and please subscribe to Late Night Lessons - THANK YOU!

I saw Cinderella, White Lion and a band called Tangier on a triple bill at the Baltimore Arena in '87. Cinderella was the best of the 3 by far. Jeff and the boys were so polished and had great chemistry on stage. Then a few years later, I met Jeff LaBar at the legendary Hammerjacks in Baltimore. I walked up to him and said, "You're Jeff LaBar!" He said, "Yes I am. And I don't know your name." So I told him who I was and we hung out the rest of the night and he got me ridiculously drunk. When I heard of his passing, that's the first thought that came to mind. He was a very down to earth guy. RIP Jeff! Glad I had the honor to meet you.

My sophomore year in college ('89) I decided to try and fling the guitar around my neck like Jeff used to do. At the top of the spin my strap came undone and my "Pink" Kramer Focus hit the ceiling and fell head stock first to the floor....breaking the headstock in two. I saw Cinderella several times and they still are one of my favorite bands! Thank you for making this video!

My first sighting of Jeff: I was at my girlfriend's house, after 11 pm, I was 20 at the time and "Shake Me" video was brand new, my first time hearing it when all of a sudden he spun his red Kramer 360° around his body. I said, HOLY S**T, DID YOU JUST SEE THAT!! From then on, I was hooked with those guys. We had to buy the album, there was no instant gratification KZread. I had to do my homework and learn more about them. Jeff was in my radar from then on,but I thought that was the coolest thing. What a contrast of styles between him and Tom, just sounded awesome. All of our heroes are passing away before our eyes, which means we're getting old. Stay young at heart brothers, r.i.p. Jeff, you're one of the cool ones ☹️.

Saw Cinderella opening for David Lee Roth on the Eat em & Smile tour. They were AWESOME, especially for a new band & opening act! Never forget this day,we got rear ended in my friend's 73 SS Nova on the way to the concert. I had a big lump on my forehead from hitting my head on the windshield. LOL It was 1985-86 if I remember correctly? Seat belts weren't mandatory yet. I bought a Black 87 Charvel model 2 because it closely resembled Jeff's black Kramer. The single humbucker. Somebody Save Me is still a favorite song of mine. We're losing way too many of our guitar heroes lately, it sucks!!! R.I.P. Jeff LeBar

One of the things that I find most interesting in covering guitarists that are not in the “hero” category is that how advanced a lot of them were but they were in bands where they did not reach the status of everyone wanting to copy their style and licks.

I noticed on the tapping riff he alternates with the left hand, descending after every other tap rather than ascending each time (F# G & A then A G & F#). You really hear it when he starts to slow down, which makes the riff even cooler actually. I liked Cinderalla in the 80s it's a shame when I hear about someone passing like this, especially a guitar player.

I was able to see them a few years later with Extreme and David Lee Roth. Both times Jeff’s playing was high energy, just like his stage presence, and It left an indelible mark on me, the same way it did you. I met Jeff Labar on at a bar on South Street in Philly back in 1996. At the time I was a Recon Marine on leave. I told him I am a Cinderella fan and he asked me if I had any cocaine. Of course I didn’t do coke and suspected he assumed I had some because I’m Black. I didn’t get angry. I decided to fuck with him. I told him my favorite song by the band is ‘You Give Love a Bad Name’. Jeff immediately became annoyed and told me that was not a Cinderella song. I told him I was just fucking with him and I explained I was a Marine on leave and don’t do coke. He laughed and apologized. Jeff had a good sense of humor. I’m glad I met him.

So underrated. Cinderella got buried under their 80s hair/clothes and people wrote them off as another Poison. Same with Warrant. Ironic that I saw both of them on the same stage one night back in what must have been ‘89 (I’d have to dig around to see exactly) and the show was flawless.

Cinderella is the most underrated rock band of that era . I never got to see them live , but the word is they were the best live band in the glam/hair genre . I think their management pushed them towards the glam look and sound , especially on Night Songs . If they were put out as pure rock n roll band , they probably could’ve been an east coast GNR type phenomena . Tom Kiefer was as good of a singer , songwriter , and guitarist as anyone else . Blues based Tom and the more shred style of LaBar make a great dynamic push pull thing .

When I was a young boy They said, "You're only gettin' older" But how was I to know then That they'd be cryin' on my shoulder Put your money in a big house Get yourself a pretty wife She'll collect your life insurance When she connects you with a knife Somebody get the doctor I'm feelin' pretty poor Somebody get the stretcher Before I hit the floor Somebody save me, I lost my job They kicked me out of my tree Somebody save me, save me And everybody's got opinions But nobody's got the answers And that shit you ate for breakfast Well, it'll only give you cancer We're runnin' in a circle Runnin' to the morning light And if ya ain't quite workable It's been one hell of a night RIP Jeff

I hate that I got rid of my Kramer Pacer! It was candy apple blue with Seymour Duncan pick-ups and gold hardware with a Floyd. I bought it in the early 80s. It cost me almost $1000.

I hate that I sold my Ibanez Voyager. It was made of Koa with gold hardware including a gold Floyd Rose bridge.

Hey David, I've been really getting into your content lately and I have to ask: what is that combo amp you are using? It looks like a Behringer of some sort, but I can't find it anywhere. You get killer tones out of that thing!
