Very good starting suggestions for getting going with Fusion. One of the complexities is that there are often numerous ways to achieve the same/similar outcome in Fusion (as there is in Resolve in general). Finding your preferred workflow is one of the many learning points associated with Resolve, but especially with Fusion.

What was confusing that is now clear, is a practical understanding of how nodes work, and a glimpse at their potential. Many lights have been shed about different tools in Da Vinci - like the spline panel and the tweaking of the graph, and the fact that many keyframes on it can be moved and stretched all together - that's very helpful. Along with knowing how to show one window at the top with 'this little button in the upper right', and how to hide and show bits of title - which gives inspiration to many fun things that can be done (like the slowly emerging 'Aliens' title?) - One thing that is still confusing (though I don't think I can blame resolve, but my human error) is why when picking up the transform centre, moving thing, it only moves the green transform box around the window, and not the text it should be attached to as well - as I seem to have placed it in the same place you did. I'm sure I'll figure it. Thanks for all the info - Your videos are always very informative and useful to follow.

Hi Casey, Just found Davinci Resolve as my other video editor was crashing often and was frustrating. Love your tutorials and this is just making my life so much easier. Could you perhaps give your viewers a short tutorial on how you would compose a short video integrating video clips, images and sound effects/ music by using some of the great graphics that you have shown us already? I struggle with keeping it all harmonious and smooth, my short videos seem rather disjointed and don't flow well. Love your work!

Awesome video, still a newb here as well, but your fun, easy way of teaching shows you not only have editing skills, but great "teaching" skills as well. Thank you. I have a question, what's the benefit of using the spline editor for just select keyframe and f vs choosing ease in or out (or do I need a transform node to be able to use ease and out?), other than being able to make lots of custom key frames and adjust in the spline which gives more options than just ease and out button. Thank you.

Thanks, this rocked. I'm coming from AfterEffects, and they don't use "nodes" so this is all new to me. AE uses layers. I'd like to understand the relation between rectangle and merge. Because in my mind, for the rectangle to be a "crop" of the text it should come after the text, not in a merge. (in AE, it would be a crop or mask layer over text) And extra explanation would help.

I have a suggestion for another video (: Can you tough sky replacements, again? I guess you did an older video about this. Issue No 1 is: What's the best way to select the (grey) sky? Issue No 2: What's the best way to track the sky when there is more camera movement to all sides/angles? (Most samples use very simple footage with an almost fixed camera...) I was wondering if there is a way to kinda add a 3D layer to the footage which adds a virtual dome where you can place the new sky? (I guess it would be best to have a 360° photo of a new sky as a replacement)

Have a look at Casey's tutorial about creating macros. In text form: You select everything except a (optional) media-in and media-out, right click, Macro->create Macro Name the Macro, tick every check box you want to be able to alter from the edit page (eg. scale, angle, ...) In that macro window under File->Save As... choose a location where you easily can find it again with the windows explorer (like Desktop or users\Documents\DR\mymacros), hit save Still on the Fusion page, open the effects pane and then open the tree (Templates > Fusion) Then open that folder you saved your macro with your windows explorer and drag'n'drop the macro file (your-macro-name.setting) from that folder into the opened effects tree on the right side where the effects are listed. This will install your macro and you will be able to re-use it on later projects and change parameters on the fly in the inspector pane without even going into the fusion page.

This was great, and I will try these out so I can get more familiar with them. What confuses me is the terminology of many of the tools such as in the inspector, etc. Not sure of what all the various items do, and it takes a lot of time to frequently search the user manual. Rather than risking irreparable destruction of my clips I end up avoiding many tools.

  • @gabuchancreates9813

don't be afraid to try new things, you can always control Z and just undo what you tried, that's how I'm learning, I still get very confused about which tools do what, even if I hover my mouse over it, it will tell me the name of it but what does it do? so I either google, search Casey's channel or just mess with it, just takes some getting used to. Premiere used to be like this for me until I spent awhile on it. Have fun and control Z, try something, control Z, etc. You can also make additional timelines or sequences so you can copy and past your work and experiment, and use adjustment clips in edit page, in NLE you can't really do irreparable damage or destroy your clips.

Good to keep fusion tuts short and to the point for beginners. This tut shows that, while fusion has a lot of options, almost nothing is intuitive. If you don't know how to do something and no one is there to show you, then good luck. What's the best, comprehensive fusion training out there? What's the best free training? What's the best paid and is it better? If some one came to you and said I only have access to resolve and I need to do some motion graphics and compositing in a project for a client, where would you send them to learn how to do it? What's the most comprehensive, zero to hero fusion training?

@@CaseyFaris You do a very good job of teaching in this video and it's because you concentrate on how Fusion works and not on one particular wow effect. I think that's your strength as a Fusion trainer and what makes me a fan. Maybe try to come up with a list of typical things artists need to do, like lower thirds, or show opens, or logo animations (you already did a really good one on this in which you showed how to divide a logo into parts and animate the parts to reform the logo onto screen). Maybe how to add glows and animated highlights, how to add motion blur, set extensions, or object removal. I hate to bring this up, but maybe do an after effects project with layers and show how it should be done in Fusion with nodes. There is no one better to teach Fusion than you. Much appreciated.
