3 Femoral Nerve Exercises (Meralgia Paresthetica)

Today's video covers exercises for femoral nerve pain and other symptoms such as numbness and tingling. Irritation of the lateral femoral cutaneous branch of the femoral nerve can lead to a condition called meralgia paresthetica.
The femoral nerve originates in the low back (lumbar spine) and is made up of nerve roots L2-4. The femoral nerve has both motor and sensory functions. The motor branches help control hip flexion (psoas major and iliacus muscles) and knee extension (quadriceps). The sensory branches provide touch, pain and temperature sensations to the anterior and medial thigh regions.
My new book has comprehensive rehab programs for the 50 most common orthopedic injuries and pain issues, including nerve pain in the arms and legs. Click the following Amazon link to learn more about the book. a.co/d/hAA1yRH

Same. Have you tried rubbing urine on your thigh. 🤦🏾‍♂️ If Chad Johnson the NFL wide receiver didn't say it, I definitely would've never attempted this. But I also do the stretches, but I rub my urine on my thigh and instant relief in under 2min. I've tried it a few times just to be sure I wasn't going crazy. Supposedly, we have stem cells in it. It works for half a day. I haven't soaked, which what he used to do for his ankle and feet. He'd also warm it up and said he could heal a sprain ankle in a couple days.

How does one get this nerve pain? I've had a sore back "flexor" I am told, for 4 months now. It feels like half of a tennis ball on my L3 which restricts me from bending forward. I can golf, paddleboard, etc. without pain) but bending straight down......oh my. I can touch my knees or sometimes my shins, but that's about it. I'm 53, in active menopause and pain from head to toe on a daily basis. Could my back issue be causing this new femoral nerve pain? My outer thigh is painful even to a gentle touch! THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO!!! Going to try these stretches this morning!! Much gratitude from Canada :)

Couple of weeks later I started noticing the pains you described on my right thigh. They were painful. I endured for about a month untill I saw this excercise video. Hi, great video …… I’m about to subscribe after writing this message because your video is the best one I’ve seen….. I’m pretty sure I have this problem…… 2 yrs ago I was literally just sitting up on my sofa and got the most incredible pain in my left thigh….. for 3 weeks I couldn’t walk, if I lay on the bed flat, I couldn’t raise my leg up (when straight out), I couldn’t lift my foot up off the floor when standing so I’d have to rock my foot toes to heel to put on underwear and trousers etc… The only way I could get about was on crutches, I couldn’t even stand properly. I’ve never felt pain like it, (ice packs were the only thing that eased the awful cramp like pain) and I’ve had chronic back pain and fibromyalgia for just about 30 years now. ….. I’ve come a long way on my own, slowly getting back most of my leg function, I still can’t get on the floor….. I can’t bear any pressure on my thigh, also numbness and tingling, I decided to try my local physiotherapist and he gave me some exercises. One of them is to lay on my stomach and lift my heel to my butt. I’ve only done a few of these repetitions so far, but I feel I’ve gone back a whole year or more on my recovery. I’ve had to use ice packs again and haven’t needed them in a long time and the pain has ramped up again…… do you think I may have the condition mentioned in this video? I appreciate we’ve never met etc. I’m 52 and a woman…….sorry for the long message, but I wanted to give as much information as possible……thanks so much for your time……. Jan

Usually, this problem only causes pain and sensory changes. If your leg is buckling or giving way, the issue may be associated one of the nerve roots in your low back. I would recommend seeing your local orthopedic physical therapist or an orthopedic doctor who can check your spine.

I have a doctor's appointment in March but is this common with MP?

  • @RehabScience

    @RehabScience

    2 ай бұрын

Yes, those symptoms can occur with this issue. Since the nerves that go down the front of the legs start in the low back, you may experience pain and other symptoms in that region as well. Also, since the femoral nerve travels through the quadriceps muscles on the front of the thigh, it is possible to get knots in that region.

No, the lower leg, including the soles of the feet, are supplied by branches of the sciatic nerve. I would recommend trying the exercises in the video below. kzread.info/dash/bejne/g3lmyMyDoMede6w.htmlsi=ewpLHgZbkjHo2B3R

When you have active nerve symptoms. However, you have to be careful not to overdo it as these exercises do challenge the nerve and can lead to a flare-up if too many nerve mobilizations are done.

Will these work if my thigh has been numb for two years?

It is less likely that they will help, but it wouldn’t hurt much to try them.

@@RehabScience I went on a hike with a pack when my blood sugar was quite high back when I was dx’d with T2D. Had a pack on with the waist thingy pretty tight. Woke up the next day with numbness that never went away despite physio. I think the nerves have been damaged for good. Can still do most movements except certain stretches that cause an unbearable burning sensation in my lower quads.

You're not alone. I also have this for some years now actually. I initially went to the doctor and he confirmed it's Meralgia Paraesthetica but nobody knows why it occured (am not overweight, no professional sports or anything like that). He told me to stretch, do exercises but it never went away. I am still looking for something that helps. But I also don't really mind all that much, I have feelings of numbness and strange sensation but other than that no issues at all while doing sports or whatever.

You may need to play with your sleeping position as it sounds like the nerve is being stressed while you are asleep.

Can you have a femoral nerve issue without numbness and tingling… So say just pan in the region that goes down to the medial knee and inner ankle..

  • @RehabScience

You could just have pain, but the femoral nerve doesn’t usually refer past the knee. The inner ankle is innervated by a branch of the sciatic nerve.
