How to Sleep with Meralgia Paresthetica (The BEST Sleep Positions!)

I'll show you how to sleep with Meralgia Paresthetica comfortably! Whether you normally sleep on your side, your stomach, or your back you need to try one of these THREE positions to finally get some rest without as much pain. Stop letting your lateral femoral cutaneous nerve pain ruin a good night's sleep! Towards the end of the video, I also give you FIVE additional tips to get comfortable at night when you're having nerve pain from Meralgia Paresthetica. There are so many things you can do for at-home relief for Meralgia Paresthetica.
Sleeping with Meralgia Paresthetica can be miserable, I know because my patients tell me about it. The good news is that simple position changes and support can make a huge difference and get you relief from Meralgia Paresthetica at night. It's difficult to recover from this condition if your body isn't getting quality sleep. A lot of the healing process happens when you sleep, and everyone wants to rest well so they're not tired and unproductive during the day.
Remember, the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve is only a sensory nerve. This means that if you're getting weakness in your hip or leg you may be suffering from another condition or have something else going on in addition to Meralgia Paresthetica. This is why I always recommend seeing a chiropractor in order to get examined and diagnosed correctly. Chiropractic for Meralgia Paresthetica can help you recover from this condition before it becomes something long-term that's harder to get rid of.
Surgery for Meralgia Paresthetica should be a last resort option. The good news is that data shows that 91% of cases will resolve with what's called conservative care. Conservative care, something chiropractors specialize in, includes corrective stretches and exercises for Meralgia Paresthetica. Additionally, soft tissue release, massage, and chiropractic adjustments (joint manipulation) can relieve pain and speed up your recovery.
If you're suffering from lateral femoral cutaneous nerve pain then make sure you check out my 3 part blog series (below) and the other videos in this playlist. I cover a bunch of stretches and exercises for Meralgia Paresthetica as well as some muscle pain relief techniques I use in the office. As always, if you have questions drop them below in the comments and I'll do my best to answer them or make an additional video!

Doc, You’re amazing! I had excruciating stabbing pain with numbness down my thigh that continued everyday for months. I did your exercises when I felt it flaring up. After approx 4 weeks I have only had a few flare ups that were easily relieved by exercise. Thank you so much and now I can sleep :-)

Thank you VERY much for this. My problem was actually misdiagnosed twice. First, as a yeast infection. But a dermatologist nixed this. And next as a bursitis. But it is clearly not that either. It has been SO frustrating. After researching it, the symptoms seem EXACTLY like Meralgia Paresthetica as far as pain/burning and the area involved - especially during sleep. And the cause as well. I will try some of the things you suggest (just ordered some Biofreeze, for example). And I greatly appreciate you making these videos. ☮

Only question I have is there a modified side sleep for the side that is affected? I have two major tears in my Rotator cuff (supraspinatus & Infraspinatus) both are completely torn from the humerus. I'm having to wait until June before I can have surgery. It's just taken so long to get this taken care of. Been working on the repair for 5 years now so hopefully in June it will happen but until then I still need to sleep and very hard to get comfortable on my back. So if you have any ideas that I can use to get through this painful time I would greatly appreciate it. The rest of your video was very informative and I'm sure it will work for me.

  • @JasonWilliamsDC-Chiro-Rehab

    @JasonWilliamsDC-Chiro-Rehab

I can't give you specific advise since you're not a patient I've seen. I will say if it's extending below the knee, I wouldn't expect that with Meralgia Paresthetica. That would raise my suspicion of Femoral nerve radiculopathy or Sciatica nerve radiculopathy which can be caused by a few things, namely issues in the lumbar spine. It's always prudent to see a medical provider like a rehab-based chiropractor and get an examination, imaging if needed, and treatment if needed. From my experience the sooner these types of conditions are treated the better the outcomes. I wish you the best of luck in your recovery.

I found your information so encouraging. I’ve had surgeries, but not overweight ever, didn’t wear tight clothes, and had no injuries. I was a faithful at spin class, for years. Idk why this happened. The pain feels like a rip in the thigh with a dull knife! I scream out at night because I move slightly. Question: is the advice to use a butter knife up and down the outside of my leg every other day going to help? This technique makes me yell out.

Typically MP is localized to the front/outside of the thigh. Can you recommend a bed for this condition? I’ve been disabled with chronic fatigue syndrome for over a decade and have gained a lot of weight because of that. (i’m currently approximately 5 foot 4 inches and 230 pounds) I recently had to move into a smaller place and gave away my queen size bed and I’m now in a hospital bed. I had a touch of this before I moved here 8 months ago, but it’s really has gotten much worse and painfully ridiculous at this point. I can’t sleep for more than two hours at a time because I wake up with this excruciating pain. I use to get tingly and numb once in a blue moon before moving here but ever since I moved it has increasingly gotten worse and now every single day it’s pins and needles and excruciating pain. And I really believe it has something to do with this bed and the new lounger that I’m using during the day instead of my old sofa recliner that I had before. I’m not really sure what it is about the new furniture pieces that have made my condition 100 times worse. This bed is softer than my other very soft bed I had before and for the first time I’m using an adjustable bed. This bed has also tore up my left shoulder. It was a good shoulder before this bed. So now I’m forced to sleep on my back and the only way I can fall asleep on my back is more like in a sitting up position using the adjustable bed. When I wake up in the middle of the night then I will flatten the bed more. I need to get another bed and I don’t really know what it is about this bed that is actually causing all this pain for me. Do you know why this bed is hurting me ? I don’t want to end up turning around and buying the same problem again. This hospital bed has 6 1/2 inches of foam on the top and my old bed was very soft with coils and a pillow top. I really need a good nights sleep and I hope that you can shed some light on what kind of a bed and mattress I should be getting. Underneath the 6 1/2 inches of foam on my current hospital bed, I placed a regular coiled twin mattress there because otherwise when I just had the foam I could feel the metal wires they have as the support system underneath, it hurt my hip when sleeping on my left side. Before I put the twin mattress under there I woke up feeling like somebody had beat me up in the middle of the night every night. I don’t know how they can put seniors on these beds in the assisted living facilities. They are horrible beds. Thank you for your service.

A chiropractor, physical therapist, or medical doctor who's familiar with your condition may be the best to ask and hopefully, they can give you some valuable advice on what might work best. I have huge complications after a stomacsurgery. All kinds of strange and not so strange complications like pain, fatigue, depression, sleep problems, major nutrion lack (not enough Dvitamin, b12, folat (don't know the English word) and loads more) so I'm on doctors prescription for several minerals and vitamins. I do lack albumin (protein) aswell. Now to my question - can Meralgia Paresthetica come from for example skeleton issues in the spine, like disc compression due to malnutrition (previous scans has shown disc compression and osteopleni the stage before osteoporosis). And can it come from a tumor? My father passed away a few years ago from cancer. He had metastasis in one of his hips, almost eaten all hip away... 😱 So what ive found about this up till now is the most common reason is some form of irritation or pressure to the nerve from either outer facts like belts clothing and so on or from inner pressure like overweight, spinal closeness... But can it come from more benign things like cancer or discdegeneration? I'm truly embarrassed about my crappy english but I hope you can understand my question anyway!? Loads of prethanks from Sweden 🇸🇪

I'm sorry to hear you're managing all those conditions and wish you the best of luck in recovery. MP doesn't come from a disc issue, but an entrapment near the front of the hip. There is a rare case report of a disc issue with referral causing a condition that mimicks MP, but I think it's probably rare. MP is rather straightforward compared to other types of burning/tingling/numbness nerve issues. MP also only involves sensory fibers, so if there's weakness involved that's a factor that rules out MP when I'm making a diagnosis. The best thing would be to ask your doctor since they're going to be familiar with your case. Unfortunately, I can't give you any specific answers since you're not a patient of mine. I wish you the best and thanks for checking out our channel!

I can't really say if these sleep positions would be helpful or not, I suppose you'd have to see. From what I understand RLS is especially multifactorial and has some contributing factors that may include emotional health (stress), exercise levels, and dietary factors which influence brain chemicals and how the brain communicates with muscles of the leg. If I sleep on my side I don’t experience it, only when sleeping on my back I wake up with my thigh burning in pain , but it goes away after a short period of time upon waking up. It is possible to have it in both legs. I usually dig pretty deep into the exam because it's less likely to have it on both sides than just one side. Sometimes something more serious can be at the root of the discomfort if it's happening on both sides, but that's not always the truth and my intention isn't to worry you. Hi, Jason. You're such a life saver. I'm not sure if you respond to questions, but hoping that you will, I have some questions. First of all, I would be grateful if you could help me understand how meralgia paresthetica started for me. Due to my job, I'm not very active; I spend almost the entire day in a reclining chair, half-lying on my upper hips, leaning my back on a pillow, tracking data on a large screen. For about 3-4 years, there have been sporadic symptoms of piriformis syndrome. Initially, I thought it might be a herniated disc, though I'm still not sure. The piriformis muscle caused pain and tension in my hips, but this occurred almost once every 4-5 months. And two weeks ago, for the first time, the symptoms of meralgia paresthetica started with a slight upward tingling and numbness from the right outer side of my knee. As of now, the effects are diminishing, not as intense as the first day, with a little sensation lost on the right outer side of the knee, but I'm trying to understand the cause and what it is. How accurate could my own conclusions be, or not, so I'm still trying to determine what the problem is; I can't even be sure if it might be due to compression related to prolonged sitting. I also want to ask this because I need this detail to understand what it is as well; Is meralgia paresthetica something that could result from force during sexual intercourse or masturbation? Most importantly, what is the way to differentiate all of these from a herniated disc? What should be present for me to say that it is indeed meralgia paresthetica, and how can I distinguish it? Is it a condition that passes? Your insights are crucial for me. I would be very pleased if you could respond. Thank you.

I'm not sure if this is the condition I have, but I did suspect I had a pinched nerve. The pain is in my left thigh. Anytime the pain increases, my leg momentarily loses strength. Is that normal for this condition? I've noticed that it only hurts if my torso is too close to my left knee (which means it hurts to lift my knee, and it hurts to lean forward in my chair without leaning to the right as well). And as you said in this video, when sleeping on your back if you have your legs straight it hurts. So basically the closer I am to a 180 degree angle formed by my thigh and torso, or the closer it is to a 90 degree angle, it hurts (somewhere in between the two it feels just fine)

Sorry to hear you're suffering with that kind of leg discomfort. I think I mention in one of the videos that Meralgia Paresthetica doesn't cause weakness. That usually rules out, in my head, that its MP. The LFCN is a sensory nerve only. Sometimes folks get pain-related weakness, in other words, they get a feeling of weakness because it's so painful to move a certain way or be in a certain position. This is something a chiropractor can tease-out during an exam. I always suggest seeing a reputable rehab-focused chiropractor to make sure the diagnosis and treatment are right for the individuals symptoms. I wish you the best of luck in your recovery.

I don't give specific advice on individual treatment and don't give medication advice either so it may be best to ask your doctor. Thanks for watching!

What about if you have stomach overhang from excess skin after weightloss?

That seems like something that could cause excess compression in that area, certainly. I'm working on a few blogs that cover this condition more in depth - stay tuned.

It can involve sensation towards the side of the thighs, but so can sciatica so it's important to figure out which you're experiencing in order to nail down the correct rehab strategy.

What if someone has Meralgia on both sides? both legs I mean

It can happen, but I would be suspicious of another diagnosis if the symptoms were bilateral. I would investigate further to make sure is no narrowing of the spinal canal, specifically.

@@JasonWilliamsDC-Chiro-Rehabthanx a lot for response.. it was unilateral and used to get relived by gaba and amitrypt. a few years back. Now that I recently got diagnosed with Diabetes Mellitus , it got intense in previous leg as well as started developing in other leg especially at night. Can it be related to DM? I gained weight too in past few years.

I'll usually RX flossing a few times a day, especially in patients who get symptoms during the day as well as at night.

You know, that's a great question. I know the typical progression is to try to rehab it (stretches, exercises, tissue work, CMT, other things a DC or PT offer), steroid injections, and then there may be a nerve block technique or tissue release that orthopedic MDs do in tough cases. I haven't had a patient who required surgery or injection for this condition before/yet.
