Not only have the rents skyrocketed, but so has the level of crime and violence. The level of drunk driving and deaths on the road has also risen dramatically. They start businesses without the appropriate paperwork and they fail to employ Thai people (all facts). In short, there are very few positives. And if you came here (Phuket) for Thai hospitality, culture, food, and peaceful people, then forget it, the new reality is mini Moscow. A few weeks ago we even had first assassination hit in broad daylight on Boat Avenue!

A few points: - You mentioned that property prices have gone up in the past 18 months. While the partial mobilization in Russia may play a role in this, the main reason is the end of the cerveza. Especially considering the fact that coming out of it, a lot of employers have decided to go fully-remote in perpetuity. Therefore a lot of people have been wanting to go to Thailand for the past 3 years, having the money to do so, but didn’t want to quarantine. Starting last summer, that opportunity came again and they jumped on it. Russians are no exception. - Subletting long-term leases into short-term leases. This business model wasn’t invented by the Russians. In fact, the prevalence of such “business” has driven many local governments here in the US to put pressure on AirBnB. It takes business from hotels, while driving up the rent for the locals. In fact, I have an acquaintance in Pattaya (Western European), who does that exact business with his Thai wife. They lease houses long term (10-year contract), remodel them, put pools there, and rent them out per night (the leases have a stipulation that if the owner breaks it before the term is over, they compensate him for the work they did on the house). He has about a dozen of these. As far as condo’s go, I knew like 5 people who rented them out for a month minimum, but themselves had long term leases. This was before the cerveza, so it is nothing new. Nor is it something exclusive to Russians. - Language schools: So long as you are not from an English-speaking country, you can actually get an ED visa to study English. Now, as someone who has lived in Thailand for over a decade, you know the deal. You know that there are “schools” which are owned by a cousin of a guy in immigration. Nobody touches them. As far as the “students”, it’s the same deal, as long as they aren’t causing issues and paying their dues, nobody will touch them either. I don’t need to tell you how the interaction between business and law enforcement in Thailand works. There is the law, and there is enforcement. They are a bit different and I will leave it at that. But as far as Russians in Thailand go, this isn’t really that bad of a deal for the Thai Government. Because think about it, most of the Russians there have money. Either they own a business back home, have some passive income, or work remotely. Most of them aren’t your backpacker on a shoestring budget types. They like to live large and are willing to pay for it. Sure, there will be some bad apples, but that is with all nationalities, and Thailand has pretty much accepted that as part of doing business in tourism. But at the end of the day, Thai property owners are happy. Their properties are occupied and they are making a profit. Store owners are happy, they are making money. Restaurant and bar owners are happy, they are making a profit as well. “Legal” services and their “friends in high places” are happy, they are making money. All of that money (with the possible exception of the “legal services”), are adding to the Thai tax base. As far as the Thai people themselves, most don’t live in places like Phuket, Pattaya, or Samui. Unless of course they are somewhat involved in the tourism industry, in which case, their income has probably gone up. So this onslaught of Russians hasn’t made life more expensive for your average Thai who lives in Surin, Udon Thani, Chonburi, Chanthaburi, etc. The only people complaining are farangs who were used to cheaper prices. But let’s be honest, they can either swallow it and pay the market price, or choose not to go to Thailand. If they choose the latter, the Thais won’t really care because they are still turning a substantial profit. Oh, and wait until the 2023-2024 high season, when the Chinese will start coming in large numbers. If the Russian “invasion” (to use your terminology) will be akin to the bay of pigs, the Chinese “invasion” will be akin to Normandy. You ain’t seen nothing yet…

@@robbatayaki5505 The Western European has a Thai wife, everything goes through her AFAIK. As for the people subletting, not sure which visas they are on. But illegally subletting apartments on AirBnB isn’t exclusive to Thailand. Plenty of that in Miami. But technically yes, you would need a work permit. On that topic, you can actually “buy” a work permit. Not for the purpose of working, but in order to stay long-term.

I am russian. And I am very sad with your video. I never did anything bad in my life. I am educated and intelligent person. I never even tried alcohol. I am living my quite peaceful life and trying to be happy. And all my russian friends are the same . I am a doctor. And I like to help people and animals as well.. I like to watch sunrise and watch movies about kindness and love.. my hobbies is to help animals... and I can not believe that this world has become so cruel and full of racism This last year I got heart attack from the stress what is going in my country and from hate of European people in all social media . Guys, Who give you the right to insult Russian people ? Who give you the right to say we invaded Thailand? I came to Thailand because I want to be alive and my heart is tired to cry from pain and hate around. And I am also suffering from high prices here.. but I don’t have many choices to travel to another countries.. as you guys have. We Russians feel even worse than Ukrainians. we are morally broken and depressed .. we were betrayed by our own country.. And we were betrayed by the whole European world, which has always talked about democracy. You show your democracy when you stoped to give visas to us.. Instead of supporting us you put knife in our backs.. the funny thing is that Russian people who created this war they are traveling to Europe very easy till now .. Because they are millionaires and they can buy what they want. But you betrayed us. You showed us that your democracy is fake. we, ordinary people, see only hatred towards us .. but you all just continue to killing our hearts .. Is this your European democracy and tolerance? We are innocent people forced to move to Asian countries. While the real aggressors come to live in your Europe. Is it fair? And you are proud of yourself and your sanctions against ordinary innocent people. who are dying of pain right now

Russians have started a war in Europe. You shouldn't be allowed to travel. Personally, I love Phuket, but I don't go there anymore. I don't want to risk having to sit next to a Russian in a restaurant or the like. Keep up the good war, I hope you lose soon so we can have peace in the world.

Ukraine has banned all men between the ages of 18 and 65 from leaving the country. But as you can imagine, the ones with the means to leave, do leave. And the ones who were out of the country before the war started, aren’t in a rush to return. Plus, a lot of European countries are taking them in as refugees, providing them with various assistance programs. “Assistance programs” and “Thailand” are two phrases that don’t go in the same sentence. Especially when you add the phrase “foreign national” to that sentence. THESE are the real reasons why you don’t see as many Ukrainians as Russians in Thailand. That and the fact that there are 3x more Russians than Ukrainians to begin with, coupled with the fact that Russia has a much higher standard of living than Ukraine (before and after the war). Therefore, your average Russian will have more means to travel, than your average Ukrainian. Do your research, use your brain, and don’t buy into the propaganda from either side.

Yeah, we all understand why they're escaping their country (and many would try to do the same). However, it doesn't make it right and understanding doen't mean accepting. I'm not blaming them for doing so, though, but I'm blaming their government for letting it happen. Indeed, being the citizen of a country is not just about having a bunch of rights, but also about having a few duties. And potentially having to fight for your country, is just one of them. Nobody wants to go to war, but that's not the point. When your country is at war, you just have to go. Indeed, it's not always about what we want or not, not always about what we agree with or don't. When there's a war, your personal opinion is irrelevant, your government is in right to expect you to go and fight it, just like you expect him to do a whole bunch of things for ya in times of peace. And not only that the men shouldn't be allowed to leave Russia these days, but the women shouldn't be allowed to either. Because when the men are out there fighting, who's supposed to keep the country's economy running if too many women are also gone ? Who's supposed to take care of other people in the country (elderly people, children) ? What will Russians staying in the country (for whatever reasons) think about those leaving and abandoning them with all this shiiit on THEIR back ? What's the example given to children and the next generations of Russians ? And no, I'm not Russian myself. Yes, I live in Phuket. And yes, I fought for my country.

@Eric e ... I probably couldn't disagree more. "When your country is at war, you just have to go." So, my country, right or wrong, yeah? Kind of like "my father, drunk or sober" ... and when he beats the shit out of my mother, I should just respect that, yeah ... coz he's in charge? There's nothing sacred about governments. They get their power from people, sometimes, and sometimes they get their power by nefarious means. When they exercise that power immorally, it doesn't matter how they came by it, they deserve to be resisted. There is no contract that says while they're in power they deserve absolute or blind loyalty. If we had more courageous conscience-driven resistance to stupid adventurous wars, we'd have less stupid adventurous wars. And finally, whether it's the excuse of soldiers or of citizens, "I was just following orders" doesn't hold up well, as a justification for immoral actions.
