Really impressive, and the "Star M Japanese F-Style Anti-Burr Drill Bits with Hex Shank" are actually available in in modern, civilized measurements "aka "Metric")! 😃

At first I was like what could possibly be so unique about those star M bits, then 2 seconds later my face was 😳, can’t wait to pick some up, great video

Awesome bits... thanks for sharing. Now, would you do a tutorial on how these are sharpened? It'd be SUPER valuable to know how easy each type is to sharpen. Thanks!

The wood owls don't look too bad, I'm guessing if you can sharpen a forstner you could sharpen one of them. Same deal with the F type. Getting used to the angles and getting your eye in would take a minute but should be doable. The spiral flute step bit on the vortex, yea, not so much. It might be doable, but it is going to be a pain in the ass regardless.

@@missedyadobalina8619 By chance did he say when? After watching, I ordered the 7 piece set and was helping my son with the remodel of his house. While drilling through some pine 2x4, 2x6, 2x8 I hit a nail. Now it is worthless until I can sharpen it. Per the Taylor website they are made from high-carbon steel thus I am super surprised that a common nail has inflicted damage and rendered the bit worthless.

So this is the video you shot right after I left! Now I guess I have some bits to buy. Thanks again for your time Sat. and it was great meeting you guys.

Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. I tolerate.twist bits and forstner bits, but I hate spade bits. Did I say hate? That might not be stating it strongly enough. Loathe? Detest? Would damn them to hell if I had the power? I just bought all three styles you show here and will be trying them out over the summer after my new shop is completed. I am shopless at present. They say patience is a virtue. But then, "they" say a lot of stupid things.

Ok my jaw hit the table. Question though. How hard are these to sharpen? Eventually, especially with metal you will need to at some point.

My favorite video of the year so far. I am always on the look out for great products to make my woodworking life easier and these bits will replace a lot of junk bits in my shop!

Are they expensive to buy? I only ask because I highly doubt the average person would be able to sharpen them so … they might end up in the trash once you’ve dulled the cutting edges a bit. Just food for thought.

I finally broke down and bought the WoodOwl overdrive bits and Viking Norseman Vortex bits. They arrived today. I have not tried the Norseman yet, but I tried the WoodOwl and they are sweet.

I bought the Woodowl Overdrive bits. I was electrifying a Garage. I was drilling through 100 year old studs. First three with my spade bit. Then they arrived and went through like a hot knife through butter. Thanks for the video.

Thanks for the video, im gonna test every one i can buy in 1/4 inch. I have been using an upcut cnc bit to drill pilot holes in dowel rod for a product i make. Then use either twist, brad or forstner bit to finish the hole.

I have looked at the Overdrive bits on TayTools a few times. It doesn't go into much detail about how cleanly they drill. Thanks for another informative entertaining video.

I've used the wood owl beds, and they are truly awesome.

They, the wood owl, work so well ! So fast and they have both screw lead and pin tip (overdrive and tri). (Have to try the others, Thanks)

I have been looking for a way to drill 3/4" holes in a grid on my already existing workbench top, to accommodate dogs .The top is 1/2" ply and 1/2" MDF. I've tried all the usuals; spades, augers, and Forstners. The backer board isn't really an option. The blowout was significant enough that I bought a whole set of Wood Owl Overdrive bits, because the 3/4" was sold out on it's own. When they arrived I put the 3/4" bit in my drill guide. The first hole cut so fast, I laughed. I drilled the rest of the grid in a few minutes. Amazing. Thanks for the tip Izzy and Maggie.

When a hole has to be vertical, a plunge router is a good option. Tamar has a good video on drilling a perfect grid too. If you really want a perfect grid to make square cuts, look at the Parf system.

That is an amazing drill bit.

These bits look amazing! But I can sharpen twist bits, paddle bits, and forstner bits by hand quickly and easily. The geometry of these bits look a little trickier.

It's been a few months now and Izzy hasn't responded on how to sharpen these even though there are several comments on it. This isn't like him. He usually responds to comments like this. It's kinda worrisome. I'm not saying these aren't great bits but if we can't sharpen them at home then we have to either buy replacement bits or send them off to have them professionally sharpened, neither of which I'm willing to do. Come on Izzy, shed some light on this.

Very cool and useful information. I would like to see you demonstrate the Norseman bits on tempered steel like drilling into a table saw blade for comparison.

I really like the Star-M bits from japan. Excellent for the 14-32mm+ holes. I agree they are pretty unique.

I liked the bit where you drilled the holes

I really like pilot point bits not to be confused with Brad points, like those stepped points but without the big cone on the end.

Been using Fisch bits for a while, they produce an excellent cut with no tearout, these look faster.

I did the electrical in my basement with a Forstner bit. Over 50 holes in 2x4’s. Near the end I had a hole where the drill would not fit. So I purchased a flex auger bit. O my gosh. The difference was insane.

And now I need to upgrade my drill bit sets what a difference

It seems the Norseman and Overdrive bits aren't available in metric, are they? P.S. Get yourself a shop assistant that looks at you like Maggie looks at Izzy ❤️

what about sharpening,can they be resharpened with precision ,or need a special jig and sharpening tools,example,grinding stone,file.

The first thing I think of as the test begins is "The Touch". Blow out will be bad if you're a bull in a China shop. Sometimes blow out doesn't matter, speed does. Those situations, in truth, are rarely absolutely necessary. Profit is pretty important in the world for now, it's true.

I wish I had a big red rubber stamp that said "SOLD" I could smack on the screen but I'll just have to be happy with hitting the "like" button. You guys inevitably show this old dog some new trick.

I got to say I'm amazed and converted! Secondly I assume these bits will prolong the drill life due to less stress on the machine and even improve performance of lesser drills than makita.

Interesting video! I'm curious about the versatility of the overdrive bit, how flat is the bottom of a non-through hole? With a limited budget I'm going to opt for the most versatile tools I can, and with a forstner bit I can mitigate blow out with a backer board. But it's the only tool I have to leave a flat-ish bottom of a non-through hole.

Man, I just gotta get me some of those. I do have a quick question: how flat a hole bottom do you get with the overdrive bit compared to a forstner bit?

Your channel and Stumpy Nubs are 2 of my go to posts. 1st been follower from the 1st episode with your home made table saw 2nd Congrats on your fight against your back problems! 3rd I think your posts are entertaining and relevant plus most importantly accurate ! 4th. Can you elaborate on the ease or even the possibility of sharpening these 3 amazing drill bits. As a trained machinist I have the impression that the augers bit (last one shown that was able to make angled holes) seemed to be an end mill with a drill bit angle grind. If so regrinding is possible but reduction in diameter is a result. (Not talking about the angled end of course) Lastly good luck in future, some day I hope to be able to invest in some of your products.

Wow! Man, I've been subbed to your channel for almost 2 years now, and you always think up or find the most amazing and useful tools and helpful advice, tips, (no tricks). Since you've gotten back on your feet your passion for inspiring woodworking has skyrocketed! Never a complaint-just balls to the wall and get the work done. So glad I saw your channel when I did. Impressive Norseman Vortex USA still outshines other manufactures.

I like this one, very helpful. But now I want to know more. What's going on & how are they working ? What other bits are doing wrong ? High speed footage to see how they're chipping, cutting or grinding ?

Decked out shop, plenty of Makita drills, lots of bits and no eye pro? The results however were amazing!

Great cut from all the bits! Is there anyway to sharpen any of these. For the price it would be nice to have lifetime warrantee or at least free or low cost sharpening available.

I am curious how the two top bits would work on acrylic resins. Longevity would be a huge factor for me also. Resins or acrylic will eat up standard Brad points longer use with carbine tip. Just need to justify the expense. Any thoughts?

Probably the most absolutely positively thoroughly, completely "boring" video I've ever seen. Really nice job showing the difference between these and conventional bits. Now you need to get a loan to pay for all the wenge used.

That was eye opening! And cool to watch. Thanks. A couple questions come to mind. OK, 3. How well will these work for shallow holes? Some better than others, it seems. What about wear and durability? One would not want to purcahse frequent replacements. And how does the cost compare to other quality bits?

I also have concerns about service life on the Norseman bits if used for steel. I have Norseman twist drills, and I know they're good, but they will require sharpening before too long if used for steel. I can quickly touch up conventional twist drill on the bench grinder, but it seems that the step point will need to be replaced when dull. That could get pricy. That said, I could see having a small set for use when hand drilling and using the traditional bits on the drill press.

Long ago, perhaps it was the '70s, someone came out with a set of bits that gave results much like those you've shown here. The difference was primarily in the shape of the cutting edge, which was predicated on the shape of a .30-06 or an M2 Browning bullet nose. I found a couple in a yard sale and used them primarily in metal. I remember that there had been some advertising for them but I've never found any others, since. Would you know anything about them?

Does the wood owl bit leave a flat bottom like the forstner bit?

The Wood Owl Overdrive (and Tri-cut augers) are awesome! Worth every penny. And Taylor Toolworks is fantastic. But the way you abused those Forstners wasn't much of a test. I'm tempted to say the old spade bits still have a place, like in remodeling, when you might not want to risk hitting a nail with a pricey bit. But if you're remodeling for a living, time is money and bits are replaceable. Wood Owl does sell some "nail-proof" augers, though, and I would sure be looking at them if I still did much of that work. Your links took me to some tools that don't show up when I go straight to Taytools. I think I might be needing some of those Star M and Norsemans soon.

I bet electricians would love the overdrive bits for drilling holes through studs.

How long do they last? Which can be sharpened? How do they do drilling into a log, possibly a green one where you have no moisture and potentially no through hole?

Izzy do the drill bits drill through concrete and glass too?

Are they also available in metric?

How's the finish and how consistently accurate are the overdrive bits compared to a forstner bit though? If Im using a forstner bit Im using it for those reasons over speed. Glad you showed the Vortex bits in a piece of metal, thats where they really shine. Norseman makes absolutely amazing bits all around so if you’re only planning to drill wood, can almost get 2 of their 118* tip sets for the price of a set of Vortex

A year or so ago i saw the introduction of a step bit set from Matco. They were $$$..

I would never think to use vortex bits in wood. They were designed for metal. The real test for me is how well they perform in Stainless Steel. I have not done any work in stainless steel recently so I have not been able to test. I usually use the Norseman's Cryogenic Nitride bits for starter holes.

Do you have these bits also in mm? (metric)
