    the mako3 is probably my favorite disc. The fact that you can just pick a point 250 feet out and throw a laser beam straight at it is so valuable. It's also an awesome tool to check your form and is great if you're trying to get better. Everyone should have one.

  • @JustDisc

    @JustDisc

    That was exactly our thought process when recommending this disc. Many people will say it’s too understable or “finicky”, but that’s the point. When you form is on and you need to throw a laser beam, there really is no other disc. Great that you agree! 👌

    @Jim John Marks the buzzz just has better stability. You can throw it with a bit of speed and it can still fly straight and have a slight fade back. Mako3 is a bit more touchy but it holds your release angle better at slower speeds.

    I hear what you are saying. For myself, the flight characteristics of the Buzzz and Roc3 are pretty similar, which is why I think they get compared. The molds are definitely different though as you say. My wife and I will be doing a comparison video in the near future, so look out for it!

    Warning about Sidewinders; the most inconsistent disc I have ever experienced in all the years I have played disc golf. I own 7 Sidewinders, and no two discs are the same. To be clear, and what is the most confusing, is that the flight variations have NOTHING to do with weight or plastic. I have a 159 g sidewinder that I cannot turn over if I try my hardest, then a 165 g that will flip terribly if I put a moderate pull on it. Then another 165 g that will fade like a Boss. If you are a beginner, don’t buy a Sidewinder, because you are likely to be confused and misled. The reason I own seven Sidewinders? Because the first one I owned, I liked, and in an attempt to have a spare one on hand, I got duped into buying more until I found one that flew the same as the one I liked. After buying six more, I have not been able to duplicate the one that I like, and again, none of the seven Sidewinders are the same as any of the others. This has not been a problem with any other discs that I have owned. When I eventually lose the Sidewinder I like, I will be moving on to another mold, and never buy another Sidewinder. Brutal.

    I wish I had read your post long ago. Two years ago "won" a league ctp and that was the disc obtained for said. Left it in bag and periodically threw it trying to figure out the roller. Fast forward to losing a disc on a round (common for me) and turning to the sidewinder for forehand throws. Stunned that it just went so straight (the glide) and only broke about what half of my boss throws do at the end. Now I throw it both back and fore. Which makes it odd given I throw 7 speeds best back and 11/12 speeds fore (am over 60 thus the lack of snap).

    Definitely an improvement, can tell you were arming the disc a lot more in 2020. You got a lot more power you can tap into. I'd say 2 things you could work on next is first, don't look backwards too early, you want to keep the back foot square, coil on the very last step and reach "out". Second is, you're looking forwards at release and spinning out, so focus on looking at around 9-o-clock until the disc is gone. Really slam into your front foot, keep your head still, stay behind the hit, and let your momentum bring your head up and finish balanced on that front foot. You can work on it when you're just chillin at home. Cheers!

    Love the feedback Ben, thanks for the tips to work on further improving! 👍 Not sure if I’ll ever be able to “slam” into my front foot as much as others, mainly due to my torn (and now repaired) ACL. I almost feel that I now instinctively try to avoid pivoting too much into my right knee :p Still going to work on those great tips though, thanks again ❤️👍

    I bought a mako3 a few months back and it's my favorite disc i've ever had. As a beginner it feels really rewarding to throw a good shot with that compared to something else. On other discs i feel that there has to be some "luck" involved, because it's hard to release them on the exact angle and get them to turn at the exact moment you want it to turn. But the Mako3 just goes where ever you aim whether it's on a Hyzer/Anny/Straight.

    I'm just now getting back into frisbee golf disc throwing I'm Jason Falcon 76 FalconXstreaM fastest motocross Supercross one of greatest Freestyle Motocross racers I shattered both my legs on 1 20 01 but Highland park disc golf park longest driveways in the world Baton Rouge louisiana is my park. Being 6'8 really helps alot not trying to brag but I love to teach when you want best throws for proper body English y'all want to put your disc as far out from yourself then as you step and roll y'all's body make sure your other arm is wrapped around your back for better control and no arm body drag but frisbees only go as far as a person can spin it. I've realized that when I barley loft my disc it really floats when doing a side throw but I'm the only person in the history of frisbee golf disc to throw a frisbee golf disc to the end of Pensacola Beach Pier 800 feet standing on the shore and it shoot up 800 feet and come back and catch it at 140 mph on the back side grab with motocross gloves on. Plus I've invented alot of hardcore Freestyle Motocross tricks and surfing skim boards and been the 1st to do many things. I love seeing other's in this awesome hobby/sport.

    I totally agree with you about the Mako3. That disc is fantastic! I have it in G Star plastic because Champion plastic is too overstable. It loses it's arrow straight quality in Champion. The Sidewinder is OK, but I got rid of mine because I discovered the Roadrunner. My Star Roadrunner is far better than my Star Sidewinder was. Straighter flight, longer distance, better feel. I love the Roadrunner. I haven't tried out any Aviar putters yet. I put pretty well with the Judge and the Deputy (Dynamic Discs) and the Wizard (SSS & SSSS) by Gateway Discs. Another disc I think that is an absolute must is the Innova Mamba. This baby has glide for days and being understable, it is great for beginners and intermediate players. Champion Mambas are more overstable than Star or G Star. I find the Mamba and the Leopard are my "Desert Iland discs." I could not live without them.

    Great video. Gave the Aviar a go, but the one I tried was too light for me, so my experience with it wasn't good. I am a big fan of the Wardens and Judges, but as you say, they get really beat up with that DX plastic. For me the touch on those discs makes for a lot of confidence at mid and close range putts. I also use them for forehand approaches at 50 - 150 feet on some occasions. I'd argue that the Dart in the Star plastic is a great putt approach disc that a lot of golfers should look at. It is a dome top putter, which I know is a turn off for some people. I tend to get a bit tense on the longer 50 foot plus putts, and end up either early releasing or overcompensating with my Judges and Wardens, discs I love on shorter putts. I know from throwing my Dart Stars in lots of situations that I need to dial back the throw even for longer putts, which helps me keep my form better. I also like the Dart Stars on days when I am dropping my Judge and Warden putts low on shorter putts, maybe because of nerves, maybe because of conditions. The Dart Stars help me overcome this tendency and get me back on track. I am very keen to pick up a Mako when I get back to the States in December. My golfing buddy has two of them and absolutely loves them. He's more of a power thrower than me and likes heavier weights, but those 5 extra grams he has with his discs make a big difference when I try and throw them. I'd like to have a Maco in 167-169 grams to see how I do with it. I am very curious about the Sidewinder, a disc that I have heard about but still haven't had a chance to throw. My go to drivers for different situations are the Shryke, the Wraith, and the Katana. The way you describe this disc make me feel that the Sidewinder could fit well in that repertoire. I will definitely look to get one or two when I am back Stateside. Thanks again for an awesome video!

  • @JustDisc

    @JustDisc

    Thank you! Yes I have thrown an Atlas and it is more stable/predictable. I’m personally not a fan of it due to the unique rim and the lesser glide. Doesn’t mean it’s a bad disc though, just not for me :) Personally, I would suggest the King Cobra. Its so stable for a 4 speed and has nice consistent slight fade at the end. It’s basically like a beaten in Roc3 or just a straight up Buzz. I love it and have been using it for years. May even do a video on it since I find it keeps almost any line I put on it. used to bag the Star Aviar, don't know why exactly I swapped it out, but I put with a westside shield these days, something about the tournament plastic just feels great... Have a Mako3 in the bag for soft straight shots or hyzer flips and turnover shots and when I need more stability in my midrange I pull out the Roc3. Also used to bag a roadrunner which I honestly loved for long hyzer flips etc, but I turned it over too much not long ago and it sailed away over the treetops never to be seen again. Some other highly recommended discs tho I would say are the Westside Underworld, Latitude Explorer and Innova Wraith. The underworld flies great, great glide and allows you to really work your angles, if you need a straight shot, but can't reach with a mid, just flip the underworld up and it goes dead straight , and if you need it to turn over you can just put a little more power into it. The explorer is just a really solid straight flying fairway with a consistent flight. It can handle alot of power and the smaller but deeper than usual rim makes it feel great in your hand. Despite being a 7 speed disc I can almost bomb that thing out as far as my distance drivers it's amazing. And last but note least the wraith, just a great distance driver, flips up and holds a slight turn untill it gets a reliable fade at the end. I've personally started throwing some faster discs lately as my technique and armspeed has improved, but the wraith is still my go to...

  • @JustDisc

    @JustDisc

    Thanks for the insight! - I pretty much do the same with my Mako3. If I need more stability I go for my King Cobra or Roc3 -I’ve heard good things about the explorer, but I have yet to try it! -And the wraith is now my favourite driver by far. I’ve literally bought another 3 so I think I now have something like 7-8 of them lol (only carry 2 though). It’s just a disc that can do so much and is the perfect speed for my throw. Love it! We did a review on that disc if you haven’t checked it out 👍

    I think a typical Innova starter pack is great for beginners and those discs can become invaluable tools and reusable molds as the person gains more experience and perhaps wants to upgrade plastic type. I also prefer the Mako3 to the Shark because it's more neutral, which (like the Aviar) can be a great training tool over time. The Leopard I think is also great because for beginners it's not understable for them, and will allow them to get max distance, and in time they can upgrade to faster and more overstable discs, but the Leopard can still have a lot of use for forehand (most people don't throw as far with that as they do backhand. The DX Aviar is still my primary putter, and Star Leopard still my primary driver, though I sometimes use a Gazelle or TeeBird when I want something a little more stable. Lastly the FD is really good as a neutral driver, between the TeeBird and Leopard.

  • @JustDisc

    Yeah I was actually considering recommending the leopard3 over the sidewinder for this video, but I had just gotten a leopard3 and did not have enough practice and video clips to recommend it. I have a Mako3 and a Sidewinder in the bag. I don't like Aviars as putters but prefer Proxys by MVP. I use the Mako3 for straight shorter shots that I don't want to fade or slide a long way (OB water long etc..) and the Sidewinder for straighter or longer wooded shots that don't have a backstop. If you like throwing putters you really don't need a Mako3 because it's just not a long range disc (I dont like throwing putters long). I think every beginner should bag a sidewinder though. If you don't like Mako3s you should look at a Truth (non Emax) because I find they fly very similarly once a Truth is beat in.

    My beginner 3 would be: Putter, literally any that is in your price range and feels nice in your hand. They are so similar that unless you're an advanced/pro player you won't throw the minute differences. Midrange, Mako3 or even a Buzzz because of the subtle to no turn/fade that a newer player will appreciate developing technique and consistency with. Driver, honestly nope. But if you insist on beginning with drivers something no greater than a 9 speed. A River or T-Bone are nice neutral discs for example. Now if you don't care for technique and want to just have fun and play, pick the ones that feel good or look cool and have at it! It is just a fun game with friends for most of us after all

    The Sidewinder if not that then use the Valkyrie in the plastic you want provided the disc is not in the super stiff possibly illegal stiff Champion plastic or even a Star run like this or a disc that is flat to slightly concave for a beginner. The flat to slightly concave Valkyrie disc will fly more OS like a worn in Eagle or that of a new Viking, I use a Star in the flat to micro concave for a Windier Valkyrie then my Glow Champion when going that flight then have a Messed up Champion Archon for more wind due to virtually no glide on the mold so the disc flies on the Valkyrie flight I need for wind but have a Star Archon for throwing my longest consistent knowing where the disc is going shot. One not mentioned is the Glide for the same reason the Mako/Mako 3 is used by others or the Wombat/3 by other players, to get the disc to fly in those tight gaps that nothing else will work or some longer tunnel shots. Similar disc I use is OOP with several backup Impact at the 170-172 and 173-174 gram weight sets with one 175 gam disc since those under 169 grams and the Impact over 170 grams do not work for throwing unless over powering .

    Mamba and Sidewinder are both great choices. From my personal experience, the mamba is easier to turn over than the sidewinder, even though it’s 2 speeds higher. I think the star plastic for either or is a good choice. If you go with the mamba, don’t be afraid to go up a few grams and if you get the sidewinder, I think 170 -172 sounds pretty good! 👍

    One I do not like is the Aviar due to the disc wing shape. I have found other putter Magent/Titanic in Proline for my putter mold and if they stopped both molds and I lost/wore out my molds, the Hydra beat in to fly more Magent like would be the mold I have for shorter shots and slightly longer would be Hydra nearer to new. The Shark now in bag for short midrange/approach to long putter shots that whole range and as driving putter would be taken out and would be using newer Hydra for the whole slot.

    @@JustDisc My Dad too when he played more, for some short shots that either his Rubber Putter by Lighting oop brand owned by Gotta Go Gotta Throw now or his old hard Unknown baseline Wizard for a driving putter, for approach too with all but the Wizard. The Wizard is hard to control distance wise for approach stuff since Wizard is very unique in that it can be used as a putter better then approach up to very long distances and actually running OS putts similar to the Rubber Putter where that is for straight line putting/approach but can do approach putting. Of all the putters he has I think the Wizard is first out of his bag since the mold is not great for anything except driving putter or a longer putter and he has other molds that do specific longer putter/OS putter or all around better since his main putting putter is so floppy the Ching Juju in Supreme.

    i love your channel but have to disagree with your picks. Avair's are a classic pick but i think that putters need to be selected based on feel. As for the Mako3, I think a Roc3 would be a better pick, and for a driver i would pick a teebird or TL. My pick would all be in DX plastics so you can get used to those molds and start layering.

    I hear ya Brian! We have a 2nd “3 discs every disc golfer should have Part 2” that will include a different brands of discs. As for the choices, remember that these disc choices are for ALL SKILL LEVELS. The sidewinder is debatable, but an aviar putter and Mako3 midrange are perfect, especially for beginners. Agreed that the Roc3 and Teebird are great all around choices, but not for a beginner

    It really depends on how hard you throw, your form, etc. It would be something where I’d have to see a few of your throws to recommend some discs. But if there is any disc I would recommend starting with, it would be the Mako3. And if there was any starter set I would recommend starting with, it would be the Discmania Evolution 3 disc set. Hope this helps! :)

    I picked up the Mako3 a couple of months ago in the XT plastic after watching this video. It's since become my favorite disc. Being a newbie, all my other discs are DX plastic, so I thought I'd treat myself to something better and purchased the Champion Sidewinder. After throwing it for a few weeks I went back online and read some very inconsistent reviews. Weirdly, it has almost no turn and fades like crazy. It's like they got those numbers mixed up, but it's probably just me. I'm sure it'll have some use as I improve, just not what was intended. btw, love your Canadian perspective!

    Thanks Steve! So glad you are enjoying the Mako3, its just such a great all around disc! As for the Sidewinder, it's not the first time I've heard someone say that. Plastic choice, weight and the year it was released can drastically change what type of flight you end up with. It could also be that you got a dud, or it could just be too overstable for your current form and arm speed. If you haven't seen our PART 2 of 3 Discs Everybody Should Have, be sure to check it out! A good alternative to the Sidewinder (i.e. easier to throw and get more out of it) would be the Leopard3. It's a SUPER popular discs for the males and females, so check it out if you haven't already! 👍

    @@JustDisc Thanks for the response! I didn't realize how much plastic choice, weight, and even the year had to do with how a disc flies. I just watched your latest video (What To Remember When Buying A Disc | 2 Important Things!), so, less emphasis on the numbers and more emphasis plastic and weight. Which means more shopping and throwing!
