3 Days of Bushcraft Along the River - Unique Floating Shelter, Tree Carving, Catch and Cook

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

I build a floating shelter to get off the ground from the rain, Escaping the city for a 3 day bushcraft trip by a beautiful river. This is a fully immersive ASMR adventure, where I build a number of bushcraft projects, including a bushcraft chair, tree carving, tarp setups, and even some flyfishing catch and cook action. Just updated with Closed Caption subtitles for anyone wanting to watch in a different language!
Lots of the gear I use I just make myself and some is available for sale:

You blew my mind with the taut line hitch on the tarp end and using it to bundle the line. I don't know why I've never thought of that before. Simple and brilliant.

amazing video! I'm truly inspired to go out and try more bushcraft on my own! My only concern is you sharpening your knife on a dry sharpening stone, as to maintain the knife and stone and get a sharper knife (or axe), it is best to sharpen your tools with a wet sharpening stone (preferably one that's been soaked in water for a bit). As a scout I'm really happy to see you using proper knots, tying techniques and fire care! Keep up the good work!

  • @TheBearEssentials

Hey!!! Thank you so much!!! Yes this stone is one I developed myself, it actually has a diamond grit, rather than a more traditional stone that requires oil or a common “wetstone” like the porous ones you’d sharpen on in your workshop. It gets the job done bc it’s so lightweight!! But you’re absolutely right!! The better care for it is a porous wetstone in the shop!! Thanks for the kind comment!! I’m so glad to have some scouts here!

Hi there! I wanted to leave an appreciation from what you shared! I really enjoyed this moment of relaxation you kindly gifted me and I thank you very much for the escape! I was wondering if you could have used knots like taut-line hitch to have the bed at the right "angle" easily. Even though I prefer veganism, I appreciated the respect you had by not taking too big a fish out of the water. That carved gardian of the camp was an awesome artistic impulse of you that surprised and pleased me very much! The fact that you also took the time to almost erase all of the trace of your passage there was as neet as you leaving some wood for the next one! All those details, make this exceptional! Thank you and may peace be with you!

Wow, first off, thank you so much for taking the time to write this. On the topic of the taut line - I wouldn’t trust it with my bed angle - mainly because the corsage I was using is a slippery plastic type - and friction hitches don’t hold well on it. I’m really glad you enjoyed it all, thx for paying attention and honouring all the small things in the video, I’m so glad people notice them :)

I appreciate the cautionary note about some of the camping activities being potentially dangerous. My dad and brothers were involved in scouting and I remember the conversations on how to use an ax and what could happen if they were careless. (Lose their Totin chip besides a bad injury ) In watching other bushcraft videos I’m sure I got a few more gray hairs watching the ax-the leg and possible nasty slices. How far would these gentlemen have to travel to get help before they bled out? Unless they knew some good first aid.

Hey Caroline, I’m a firefighter by trade, and carry a tourniquet with me incase of disaster. But it would not be good if I were to be careless with that axe. Anything can happen out there, but experience helps stack the odds I suppose.

I mean really it just took 4 pieces of timber so maybe not that impractical though he. Would have made hammock with the canvas. Props on showing off again though. Wanna see if I can do it now..

Great video. At first I was disappointed you weren't talking but after a few minutes I really enjoyed the sounds of nature. I found it more immersive. I don't do back country camping but I take the family car camping to Ontario Provincial parks and have learned a bunch of useful knots to use on our trips.

Funny story about Alone. I was one of the Alternates in a recent season - however my “Canadian accent” was a bit too thick for TV 🤣🤦‍♂️

That's TV for you. This was a really enjoyable video. Thanks for all the knots. So many practical uses. Love the truckers hitch for things in my truck to travel with confidence and the taut line hitch for basic things like Christmas decorations. All so helpful.

Love the video! Stupid question, but how did you get the eggs and the steak and the potatoes? Did you bring that out with you? If so, how did you preserve it? I’m just curious! I was also impressed by the floating shelter and the chair!

  • @TheBearEssentials

Hey jacob! Not a stupid question at all. I brought the steak frozen. I usually bring a frozen meat for my first night so that it’s perfectly thawed by evening. The eggs, if theyr farm eggs and not store bought, actually can last for weeks out in normal temperature. If they’re store bought, they won’t last long in heat unfortunately.
