I used to do exactly what you stated was the incorrect way to workout your calves. I’m literally at the gym doing leg day and I just did 10-15 reps based off your guidance and holy shit! I’ve never felt my calves like this. Pushing your ankle forward is SUPER KEY!! My weight isn’t even heavy either. You don’t need it since you’re moving slowly at a 2 second hold top and bottom. Dude!!! Subbed!!! Thank you!! Keep teaching!!

Thank you for explaining the difference between the Soleus and the calf and how they're trained. I do an exercise in my group fitness class with a bent knee that actually is training the Soleus and now I know the difference! Also thank you for those queuing tips. Pushing the ankle forward is an excellent way to describe the movement. Thank you for being so specific.

Seems like genetics has a lot to do with calf muscle size too, some guys have got naturally big calves, without even training them. I would suggest maximum weight you can handle on a calf raise machine or squat rack and train to fail or until your calf muscle is burning with lactic acid.

A weight heavy enough where you can perform slow full contraction then when then when cant do full contractions anymore began to do faster reps until the calf is burning. Doesn't matter position of foot focus on putting the pressure on your big toes only. Trust me it works. Ego lifting doing calves separate the calfs from the calf nots.😂🤣

Slow controlled contractions with moderate weight until your form breaks the continue with faster reps until the burn sets in. Train 4- 5 days a week the first thing ever visit to the gym. Preferably slippers or a flat shoe and focus all of the tension on your big toes regardless of foot position. Dont count reps with calfs, its a about the burn and getting to your next set in under 25 seconds. The muscle recovers quickly and u have to keep attacking it.

Finally someone talking the common sense of HIT principles. Also try even slower, which reduces momentum which therefore increases load on the muscles, and take it to complete muscle failure. If you achieve that, then one or two sets are enough. See Drew Baye and John Little for more

Sounds reasonable. Not kidding, most other advice says seated, heavy calf raises lol. Glad I've been standing this whole time and trying not to bounce...../ So I've edited this comment a few short weeks later to say that this does work. I get 3x the burn in half the reps. You can feel the difference. Far less achiles and supporting calf muscle involvement. It's all about pushing forward with your heel. Knees slightly bent works best for me. It's like a concentration curl for your calf. Do it.

I haven't been able to do calf raises on my right since the event which makes my other muscles over compensate and makes my hip hurt. How do I get my calf muscle to fire and function correctly. I sure it's a slow process but I'm disciplined. Nobody seems to have clue.
