$3,400 an Hour?! - The Cost of Sim Racing and Drifting Compared to Real Life

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Sim racing gear can be really expensive, but you know what's a lot more expensive? Drifting or Racing in real life. In this video I break out the cost of my Thrustmaster T300rs setup that I used to learn how to drift in Assetto Corsa, as well as the cost of my first season drifting in real life with my 2007 Nissan 350z. The overall amounts I spent on sim gear and real life events last year is pretty similar, but when you dig into the seat time I got in return from each the differences are pretty astronomical. If you're a car enthusiast with any interest in grip or drift, whether that be in real life or sim, I think you'll find this video pretty interesting. It makes a compelling case as to why you should 100% have a sim racing setup at home.
Topics in this video:
0:00 Intro
1:12 Cost of my Thrustmaster T300 Setup
1:55 Costs for Drifting my Nissan 350z Last Year
3:21 Sim Drifting vs Real Life Drift Seat Time Costs
4:22 Assetto Racing Experience vs Real Life Takeaways
4:47 The total cost of My 2007 Nissan 350z Drift Build
5:10 Closing Thoughts
My Story *********************
In 2022 I purchased a 2007 Nissan 350z to start attending my first drift events, and I've learned quite a bit along the way. The community has been great and I'd very much like to pay it forward and help anyone looking else looking to get into drifting for the first time. Any burning questions as someone wanting to learn how to drift? Send them my way and I'll either respond or cover in a future video.

    Very interesting to see it broken down that deep. If you can mentally afford to skip a handful of IRL events you can easily buy yourself one hell of a sim setup, then.

    I have to agree with everything you just said. I've been once to a Driving Experience with a BMW M4 on Brands Hatch (Indy layout, short version) after i had poured over 150+ hours on my sim rig in gran turismo, dirt rally on the PS4. I have drove on the Brands Hatch for over 20 hours on the longer version so i knew the track pretty well. I must say that everything felt natural and like i have done it before many times, the only difference was the actual feel of the G forces of the car in turns and while brakeing or accelerating. And the instructor next to me said i was very good on the track on how i tackle the apex corners and how i handle the car itself. I have spend around 2,000GBP on my rig, a Thrustmaster T300-RS GT, The Shifter and the Sparco Mod for the sparco wheel and handbreak, and i felt like i'm burning money but i knew that actual owning a car and go on the track , would cost by far much more money on the long run. I'm very happy that i've spent 2,000GBP on my rig, have no regrets and i encourage everyone to do it if they are realy into racing. At least in the future if you wanna do it for real, and you can afford it, you can translate all those hours from the rig, into the real car on the track. Good luck everyone

    Having run SCCA autocross back in the day even that was super competitive, couldn't imagine the on-track stuff. Was recently looking into running my drift car at an autocross for fun and spent a good 30 minutes trying to figure out what the hell class I'd need to sign up for. Since all of my control arms are replaced with non-oe style design it sounds like itd be one of the higher level classes but absolutely not going to keep up with the guys on R compound.

    @@JankyDrift I was a 17 y/o kid, my dad handled most everything but I was quicker behind the wheel. But yeah he went broke trying to support my nascent racing career. Like a lot of guys, we ran out of money and I went to college (then med school) instead. Drifting appeals to me because the part of racing I liked the most was when I’d power out of the low speed turns and hang the tail out a little. That pissed off my dad cause it used up the rears ;) I think I wanted to drift before drifting was a thing.

    I've run a bunch of autocross, it's a cheap alternative in terms of money. But from a time perspective you basically spend a full day chasing cones to get maybe 5-10 minutes of run time, so I havent gone in years at this point.

    I'm pretty sure sim driving saved me a $1k deductible last night. My tires are on their last legs and we got a huge storm during my drive home. The rear end of my truck slid out and I didn't think about it just steered into it. Slid that way for a while till I stopped maybe 150 feet or so until I stopped in the turning lane. I've been playing a lot of the dirt trucks in iracing lately, that might have helped!

    if you live in a cold climate country like sweden, finland, russia, canada etc. just get yourself some cheap rwd car like volvo, an old corolla or lada and you'll be fine. in that case there is no need to pay for a set of tires everytime you go on a track and you won't spend a lot of money on some crazy ass turbo kits, knuckles, coils and so on as it's pretty easy to slide any car on snow without serious mods. a welded diff, simple angle kit work best for any cheap rwd shitbox

I came across your channel as I had the idea that I could learn how to drive stick shift using Racing simulation. Seeing how you highly recommend a sim set up for learning how to drift, what do you think of my idea regarding learning how to learn driving stick shift? Also, could you recommend a game or simulator if you do think this is possible? I've only driven automatic and I have anxiety with the car shutting off on me when I tried to learn stick. I figured it would work to put in some hours virtually just to finally get the car to 2nd gear! 😊. Thanks for your time sir.

    You can definitely get more comfortable with driving manual with sim... But the hardest part is starting from a stop and especially on hills, and in that respect I don't know how much benefit you'll see. Most games don't seem precise enough that you can feel a clutch engagement point. Plus you won't feel that engagement point in your clutch pedal. So it'll help in some aspects but not others.

    I've seen a handful of folks say they've gone to real life with the G29. You'll probably get the overall hand motions down but might have to re-learn a bit in person since the wheel will be countersteering faster than what you're used to. I say give it a shot at this point and see how it works for you.

    Thanks for the detailed look on the costs! If I had the money (hypothetically) to pay for a car, parts and upgrades, maintenance, tires and events, there is this other resource, time. The time to maintain a car, can't be compared to the time it takes to take care of a sim rig. And also the possibility to squeeze in some seat time in a sim, here and there. By the way, are there any services which rent out drift cars at events?

    Depends on where you're located but I've come across a handful of folks renting out drift cars. Usually easiest way to find them is on the facebook groups for your local events. My last vlog I talked about a lot of what goes into setting up for an event, it's definitely a ton of work. Sim definitely doesn't get close in the thrill aspect.

    I think even if you live at the racetrack in the pits you won't be going on track as fast as I can plug my controllers in, swivel my monitor over and sit in the rig. It really is nice to just be able to bang out a lap or two in minutes.

    Totally agree. Bought my sim 1,5year ago and beeing IRL driver for 4 years - f*ck me, that was the best "drift-decission" of my life 🤣 My mates are shocked what I'm doing in tandems IRL now. Made already 700hrs seat-time when IRL in this costs I would have like...30 minutes? Last thing, with which I still argue in my head is "living your life"...still don't know how to do with this comparison :) It is better to seat at home and drift or go to event and DRIFT?...What is in your mind having experiance with both?

  • @JankyDrift

    @JankyDrift

    I'm a pretty firm believer that you should do both. I think of the experience like quality vs quantity. You can get better QUALITY experience in real life, but you get a ton more QUANTITY of experience on sim.

    I'd like to think that my sim racing experience saved my mom's life in a car accident this last October. There's was literally nothing to do to prevent the accident (thanks asshole in the middle lane that was speeding) but to slam on the brakes. And slam on them I did, without any delay of thought. So yes, sim driving/racing is practical for learning to drive, and your experience does carry over very well, even if you have a cheepo G923 like me, it's the theory muscle memory, that counts. Still a little traumatized though, wrecking in a sim game definitely doesn't prepare you mentally for the actual whiplash you experience, nor the feeling of an airbag playing punch-out on your face 😂

    While no sim model is perfect and sim controllers are still a bit lacking (moreso the software interaction than the hardware itself) I do think everyone who drives on track should have a sim setup. From an amateur standpoint where you're not really using the sim like professionals do and the model really doesn't have to be very good you can leave a lot out and still benefit IMO. It's just a bit unfortunate that due to the way controllers work, drifting is really not very kinesthetically accurate. Things work a lot better if you have hands on the wheel giving it an equivalent resisting torque, much to my dismay. Anyone who knows how power steering systems work understands that they use torque as an input, and without hands on the wheel there is no torque; but sim controllers don't really see a difference because their feedback loop is ass-backwards. Even if you're simulating a manual steered car, you're going to run into the issue of oscillations that cannot be mitigated in a sound way. Let's not even get into how brake pedals work either...

  • @JankyDrift

    @JankyDrift

    Жыл бұрын

    Yeah its not a perfect experience by any means, requires some suspension of disbelief in regard to the realism of your input devices. Once you get past that though, you can learn a ton. Definitely agree that anyone who races or drifts in real life should have a sim setup at home.
