As a black man, I am constantly amazed how many black people immediately say T instead of Bruce. I know changes was good, but Bruce one of the best pianist and writers of his generation. If you think Bruce was fire in this version, you should hear all of his later music. He is a much better overall pianist now. and he’s still playing currently. Do a search on how many songs Bruce has written, played with, and collaborated with to this day. You will truly be amazed. I saw Bruce in concert when this song was first popular. This man knows how to play and fill the room with those keys. Tupac knew what and how to sample. You’ll note T let Bruce’s song stand on its merits as he knew the power of the original song.

Must admit I get sad when someone 'samples' someone else's work and it ends up being better known than the original, especially in this instance when the original is so damn good and carries such an important message!

The law passed in 1964 was the civil rights act and the voting rights act.

The 1964 Bruce mentioned was the passage of the Economic Opportunity Act, which went hand in hand with the Civil Rights Act that was passed that same year. Those were reforms that were spearheaded by the movement led by Martin Luther King Jr. Both acts were meant to curtail job discrimination based on skin color (among other things).

The sad thing about that good legislation was the unintended consequences there were some things in that legislation that I believe was purposely put in there to hurt black people that’s my conspiracy brain working, but I think they put stuff in that bill that would work against the black community..

You're right. Tupac was honored to be given permission by Bruce to use his song.

Racism ISN'T around like it was back then. It is still around but it has changed, things are getting better. That's what he's singing about in this song. Don't resign yourself to thinking "That's just the way it is" and that "Some things will never change" that's why he follows it up with "Ah, but don't you believe them" advising you not to fall into their trap, into their way of thinking. Don't believe them when they say those things. You better believe it will change. Humanity is growing and evolving to a more peaceful existence. There are plenty of negative forces trying to push it the other way but love will always prevail.

You should listen to "The End of the Innocence" by Don Henley. Bruce co-wrote and produced it with Henley and played the piano on the track. It won the Grammy for Song of the Year in 1989.

Great reaction. & insight. Bruce Hornsby in very famous, this song was on MTV 24/7 back in the day. It's very powerful. It obviously struck Tupac as powerful, as well. Glad that Bruce's music was shared with a larger audience through Tupac's use of it.

All the hope in this song, to me, is in the line “ah, but don’t you believe them.” Don’t buy into the thought that it will never change. We can, together, make it better. It’s a beautiful, HOPEFUL song.

Totally incorrect - when Bruce was asked if he ever met Tupac, this was his response: No, I never did. As you know, of course, he recorded his version of my song, which I think was his biggest hit. A year after he was assassinated I got a cassette in the mail from the Shakur Foundation, saying “We found this song, it's going to be the single on his Greatest Hits album coming out.”

Well. I guess you're right in a sense; Tupac's version was more of an interpolation!!! He just added his own touch to it: he changed the lyrics and he sped it up a little!!!

Its like his fingers are dancing on that piano, he's also has great timing with his tempo. In the 90's it seemed like we were headed in the right direction, but after 9/11 and the Iraq war politics in this country took a ugly turn and now it's spread throughout society. Hopefully sanity will return one day.

In 1964 the US passed the Civil Rights Law that the incomparable leader Dr. Martin L. King started, abolishing the Jim Crowe Laws. This was the best song from Bruce... it became more popular from the younger generation being influenced by Tupac... this song made me fall in love with the sound a piano makes when i was a child.

An anti-apartheid song, from back in the day when whites and blacks were brothers and sisters in the struggle for equality and love. Before politics made one side dump on the other side with insidious hate and distrust. Miss the days of brotherhood and sisterhood. Politicians and race hustlers have since divided us.

This song is from 1986 some of the best music came out of the 80s.

I’m old, lived through the 60s, 70s. Things are much more fair for minorities, women, etc now. As child, schools were segregated, protestors and even quiet parades were attacked with dogs, mace, batons, water cannons, and guns. Over time things have improved in fairness to all, but there are many changes needed.
