I can see what you mean by a slight Tool sound, however this came out before their first album. I would not doubt if they took inspiration. This album was pretty groundbreaking.

Yeah, everyone’s heard “Black Hole Sun”, it’s basically their “Smells Like Teen Spirit”. Most bands probably have that kind of song. But this is early and much harder and intense Soundgarden. On this album Chris was a roiling ball of vocal rage. All of their tracks just hit real hard.

Chris' vocals, that driving bassline, insane drumming & the screaming guitars - yup, this was perfection for the 13 year old me! Didn't hurt that the music video was FIRE! This whole album is incredible - Searching With My Good Eye Closed is my #1 from it! HIGHLY recommend checking more Soundgarden! Tool would follow - and yes, there are similarities! Cheers.

The most famous bands of the Seattle Scene/Era: Soundgarden: Beyond The Wheel (Live in Germany); Room A Thousand Years Wide; Fresh Tendrils; Alice In Chains: Love, Hate, Love; Them Bones; Pearl Jam: Porch (Live at Pinkpop) *TAD* Every sojourn beyond the Big 3 should start with TAD. The most creative band, always blending melody with the heaviest of riffs. Green River (Pearl Jam/Mudhoney) Before Pearl Jam and Mudhoney, there was Green River. Inspired by the CCR song, they took it a step further. Lead singer Mark Arm was heavily inspired by Iggy Pop, and invented the term Grunge. Melvins: Houdini; A Senile Animal Heavy to the point of heaving 2 drummers. Love Battery: Between The Eyes; Dayglo; The most psychedelic of grunge era bands. Gravel: Break-A-Bone; No Stone Unturned Hardcore, bare bones grunge. My Sisters Machine: Diva; Wallflower A band created by an ex-member of Alice In Chains. The cover of Diva is a bit of a revenge taken, depicting Layne Staley's girlfriend Demri. Truly: Fast Stories... From Kid Coma; Heart and Lungs Malfunkshun: Return To Olympus (1995) The inimitable Andrew Wood, his brother Kevin, and Regan Hagar. Temple Of The Dog: Temple Of The Dog A supergroup of various Seattle bands and artists. A tribute to Andrew Wood. Motherlovebone: Bite The Apple Another supergroup of Malfunksun/Pearl Jam.

I had the opportunity to see Soundgarden live and I passed it up and it is one thing I've always regretted. I did get to see the impromptu Temple of the Dog reunion at Pearl Jam's 20th Anniversary concert when Chris Cornell came out and did 3 Temple of the Dog songs with all of the original members (along with Stardog Champion by Mother Love Bone). RIP Chris Cornell

The meaning behind the song is like this. Ever see those bullies in high school with their arms out and all aggressive? They step up all "Yo, wassup! We gonna go bro?" Because they're all judgey and opinionated and they think everyone needs to think like them. This song's kind of like that. Though not probably teenage bullies, but people that like to step up and force their opinions on people. Like they think they're Jesus Christ or something and everyone should bow down and listen to them.

You should watch the video for Peace Sells... by Megadeth. The meaning of this song, to me, is an angry rant spewed at someone you love, but really don't like at that moment. It is SOOOO angry but the idea of Jesus added to the song gives a bit of an air of forgiveness. I'm not religious, btw, it just strikes me that way. Also, it is very probable that Maynard James Keenan took inspiration from this song. There was nothing like this album, BadMotorFinger, when it came out.
