We wanted to have some fun with this video, so we went to Walmart and purchased this pair of $28 George men's chukka boots. We disassembled this pair of boots and built them back up using premium materials. This pair of boots definitely received one heck of a makeover. Now, we're auctioning them off and giving ALL of the proceeds to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

This video rolled into my feed and made my day! When I was a kid it was my big fantasy to become cobbler. I am not sure how I got this idea? There were no cobblers in rural ND to learn from, so I just carried a little suitcase around and polished everyone's shoes for 8 cents. 😁 This video lit my heart up. Thanks so much! I totally get where you are coming from! And this is not disagreeing with you, just another way of looking at things: I know a group of people who were being given tips for living frugally. One was to buy good quality clothes and shoes. The reason: They will last a long time when taken care of. I used to buy only cheap stuff, and never liked/appreciated them because they felt cheap. But anything I ever bought that was high quality, I liked and kept for a long time. My point is that, if you can, try guy high quality - that doesn't necessarily mean new - you could even buy used clothing that's cheap but high quality. One thing I always wanted was a good formal winter coat (long). But they are not cheap. But once I saw one that was really nice, and ON SALE!!! It was still a couple of hundred dollars, but those are usually $400+ .. I splurged and honestly I love that coat. I've had people stop me and ask where I got it. Of course, sometimes I've had almost no money and had to buy something cheap just to achieve a purpose (e.g. Job interview) - So I get both sides of the argument :-) Hope you and your family are doing great!

I'm not a cobbler, more of a machinist and toolmaker. Seeing all the older machines and tools never gets old. I also repair and build from scratch vintage style clockwork items (watches, clocks, music boxes, mechanical cameras, etc). Most of my machining equipment is considered "vintage" with some modern upgrades. For my clockwork type work it's hard to beat some tools I picked up from an old timer that he got from an old timer when young over 100 years ago. I hand make (from forging to finishing) hand tools used in wood working, tailoring, metal working, etc. It takes extra effort, but just like with cobbling, it all pays off with a quality you can't beat by cutting corners.

I switched out the hideous laces they came with and I get tons of compliments when I wear them. They are cheap and wear out quickly so I've easily bought 3 pairs of the same exact shoe in the past 3 years but damn I love them for some reason. The upper has a veneer that cracks and flakes and cannot be repaired. Pretty tragic waste of a highly skilled cordwainer's labour hours, but this was also a thought experiment to see what he could make of it. To its credit, Wallmart and others have made shoes cheep and widely available so imagine a time when everyone DID NOT have cheep footwear and the appeal of a 30 dollar part of boots becomes more appreciated.

Seeing “toxic” reminded me of a story. My nephews visited us in JAX, we then took them to visit my son, then at FSU. They stayed at a friend of my son’s apartment. One of my nephews would wear a pair of shoes until my sister would throw them out. The smell from the shoes he was wearing were so bad the roommates made him put them in the hall. After numerous complaints to the front office by passing residents they were moved to outside balcony. Passerby’s entering the building passed under the balcony to enter & they too complained about the smell. Impressive, right. They ended up burning them that night. Truly toxic.

Kudos for calling this video "entertainment." I can't imagine why anyone would send you $27 Walmart shoes to improve. And kudos for sending the proceeds of the sale of these shoes to St. Judes. The bottom line is you made absolutely no money off your time and what you may gain from an eBay auction is going to charity. God bless you.

Bob the point was these guys can make a silk purse out of a sows ear. I guess they could have gotten 1000 or 2000 dollar shoes rebuilt them and sold them at auction to make a point of how valuable a pair of rebuilt shoes can be.

Quite the transformation on the shoes! Beautiful work! I can’t get behind the hello fresh thing though. I get it if a person is disabled and not able to get to their local grocery store. But all to often people are using these services and not supporting their local businesses.. not to mention the massive amounts of extra packaging and plastic it creates when often a person is driving right past their local business and grocery stores anyways! On top of that all the extra fuel used and pollution created created to have it delivered to your door step. Support your local business and local grocery stores while they are still there!

I was thinking that they were going to be durable just by how much of a hard time he had separating the sole from the upper. It's tempting for me to buy a cheap pair like this, because it's cheap, and not a big deal if they get scuffed up and dirty.

It's funny, I have a pair of Aldo chukka boots that I bought on eBay for $2.25, (I'm wearing them right now) that I was thinking of sending you guys to see what you could do with them. They're a little better quality than those, but I think they're still just glued together. Can we talk about upgrading mine too?

  • @TheNunakun

I'd suggest sending a different pair. My very 1st pair of dress shoes were Aldos, wore then for 8 months. The upper leather just ripped from the welt whilst walking. Took the opportunity to rip the entire shoe open - leather is extremely thin and could tear with my fingers.

  • @adamfitch965

@@TheNunakun I've been wearing my chukka boots for about 6 months and I've been surprised at how well they're standing up. Since I paid next to nothing for them, I've been wearing them like work boots, shoveling snow, demolishing my kitchen, etc, and they still look good. No tears or popped stitching, and good wear on the tread.
