28” Pilatus PC-6 Porter Model Airplane - Start to Finish

Ғылым және технология

A series of photos and movies showing the process of building this 28” rubber-powered free-flight model airplane, the Pilatus PC-6 Porter. Designed and built by Tom Hallman in 2020. Inspired by the plans of Bill Hannan, Walt Mooney and Micro-X. Dead calm conditions allowed for long flights on a beautiful evening in Wawayanda. Filmed and photographed using an iPhone 6s, iPhone 11 Pro, and a Canon PowerShot SX20 IS. Music: “Romantic" by bensound.com, and from motionarray.com, “Eternal Beauty”, “Black & White Piano Ambient”, & “Heart-warming Upbeat Corporate”.
Here's some of the documentation and plans that inspired this build. hallmanstudio.com/PilatusPorte...
Before I flew the model, the undercamber felt extreme, so I peeled a portion of the tissue and added balsa spacers to each rib. hallmanstudio.com/Porter_under...

    I built a 2m span foam electric model off of this Airsail plan. Bought the kitset and scaled it up, constructed out of white foam and powered her with a 2820 brushless. Flew straight off the building board. I had never built a plane before let alone a rubber powered one. Great machines and - MCK I still see.

    Thx Roy. Check around the 5:40 mark. That's where I show the use of the Copic pen on top of the flattened tissue. It's much easier to do it there rather than on the covered model. It's just a simple matter of making light pencil registration marks for the LE & TE to position it correctly on the frame. The white lettering on the nose was made with inkjet. I printed red around the lettering onto white tissue. I then sprayed the back of that tissue white to make it even more opaque. Once I attached the strip to the red area of the fuselage with a glue stick, I went back in with thinned red paint to match that of the red tissue. Here's a shot of that tissue and tail logo. You can see that it wasn't exactly the same red, but I cut the strips very close to the lettering, which minimized how much I needed to retouch the red tissue. hallmanstudio.com/WhiteType.jpg

    Which airfoil do you use?

  • @maxfliart

    @maxfliart

    3 жыл бұрын

    I can't give you a specific airfoil, only that it was closer to what you would see on a Gollywock, than on the original Porter. So I backed way off after it was covered, and filled in most of it, leaving the bottom of the wing nearly flat, aft the main spar. Here's a link showing the adjustment. hallmanstudio.com/Porter_undercamber.jpg

    @@maxfliart Thanks! I have been working with airfoils (Human powered aircraft and free flight) since one or two years now, and sadly I am still searching for the 'perfect' airfoil for my scale models. Did you try to fly it with the camber? It should perform better than with a flat bottom. The problem is, one could get quite a bit of performance out of the usual airfoils, but sadly only if you turbulate the flow (eg a wire just above the surface). This is ugly and not at all scale, so not too useful (unless you don't mind losing a few points).

    @@toonverbruggen7351 pick up Harry Riblett's book on General Aviation Airfoils. It has several series of high lift, stall resistant, airfoils. I prefer Ricketts GU613.5 and GU615. Very stable, small under camber.

  • @maxfliart

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@toonverbruggen7351 Thx for the insight. No, I didn't fly her with the camber, mainly because I realized how far away it was from even the original aircraft's, regardless of tweaking it for free-flight. So I gave in to the unfortunate realization to undo what I had already done. She flies beautifully, so I feel it was a good move. Typically I build a Dave Rees style sliced rib wing, with the flat bottom. Simple, clean and effective for free-flight. It would be interesting for sure to try different wings, is it could be an easy on & off, to fly under the same conditions.

    @@davidfranklin5270 Just a quick internet search: I think that the general aviation airfoils are for higher reynolds numbers. Model aircraft have to use way different ones. Some of them might work if they are turbulated, I don't know if you are doing that?
