28 inch light weight bar comparison: Sugihara vs Tsumura.

Hey guys just made a quick video comparing the 28 in Tsumura to the 28 in Sugihara. These bars are for Stihl saws and are both .50 gauge. I've run Tsumura for awhile but figured I'd give Sugi a try. haven't cut much with it but I do like that the Sugi is about 3/8 of an inch longer and seems to have a sturdier bar tip

So after about a year of running these Bars.... Cannon is tough as nails, worth the money in my opinion Sugihara comes in second and for a full time timber cutter I think is the best option because it is priced reasonably, holds up well under long term use, and if you do end up destroying it you don't feel nearly as bad replacing it as you do a Cannon lightweight bar Tsumura is decent, but I don't think the tips are stout enough

Good video been running different bars from most manufacturers for over 40 years in the woods...can't say I found any problems I didn't create...usually get a year or two out of them.....been running Sugihara last couple years their light weight bars....like them for my long bars 32 and 36 inch. Take care Shoe in SW Oregon.

Yeah I really like my Sugi bar and I hear you on the creating your own problems lol I screw more bars up running them over with a skidder or yanking too hard while they are pinched then I do anything else. Recently got a lightweight Cannon 28-in which is working out pretty good so far but haven't used it a whole lot. Very pricey though for the Cannon but they are supposed to last three times as long so we'll see

You are thinking correct on Oregon Chain. Doesn’t hold edge real long. Now the newer exl series Oregon chain is a little better. Just a constant effort to keep sharp. Again that depends on cutting conditions as well.

Them old ones had 6 rivets. I've got an old tsumara bar...16 inch and it has six rivets. The sugi hara bars are good.. I'm waiting on a replacement.... I forgot my saws were in the bucket of a Kubota and I tried moving a limb out of my path and put the bucket right down on the bar.. talk about disappointment. I hadn't had it but a couple weeks. Oh well.. didn't bang up my old Dolmar too bad.. broke a tiny insignificant price off my starter assembly (got one a new one coming) and it skimmed one of the raised lines on the very front under the muffler.. it skimmed one of them off and I lost a muffler screw 🙄 didn't affect the saw really.. mostly cosmetic but I got all new oem parts coming and a new bar. Gonna try out the old chain that bent with the bar... seems to still be good. May have to get a new chain. Not sure until my new Sugi bar comes in to see how it runs. Dont carry you're saws in the bucket of your tractor. Wished I'd of just drove over that limb and forget it was there. 😭 oh well.. old dolmars are pretty tough.. its be like new before too long.

Remember even if you wear the tip out of it they can be replaced quite easily, worth while if you like the bar

Yeah I've never used Oregon bars but I'm sure they are good quality. I've used Oregon chain some not a big fan of that but it is cheaper than Stihl. I guess like anything it's more about the quality of the operator than the quality of the equipment!

if your holes are lined up correctly I'm not really sure what would be causing that... I guess it could be a problem with the oiler but if you don't have the problem with other bars that rules the oiler out.

I’m having the same problem ( different bar ) what I think is that there could be some space in the guide plate/bar/ oiling orifice , whereas on the stock bar it’s a tight fit , just a thought .

I find bars with a big belly work better especially with new chains that stretch. Mainly because a straigh bar will very easily derail a loose chain and I have never had that problem with a belly however the low dollar imports i bought for stumping are almost perfectly straight and if the chain has any slack it will throw it

I've never known anyone to have a problem with stihls bars. They are heavy, though I dont own any lightweight bars. I've ran the same 3 ES bars for 10 years. I'm just a firewood guy cutting 6-8 cords of hardwood, but if you keep them dressed, clean, and oiled well they seem to really last. I run 2 20" bars and 1 28" bar on my ms441cm. I even run an old cheap forester bar on my 550xp and its held up good so far. I'll get my $40 out of it I'm sure, lol. I'm considering getting a lightweight 28" bar just to save my back some. The stihl light and sugihara are about the same price and quality, but I can get stihl locally. I'd love to have a cannon lightweight bar,but I'd have to sell my saw to afford one, lol.

I wouldn't say I have a problem with them, I just think they are overpriced. The last time I ordered Sugi Hara 24 inch lightweight bars they were around $80. Stihl 24 in lightweight at my local dealer is $120. Getting 10 years out of your bars is very impressive! I dress my bars regularly and it does make a big difference, surprised more people don't do basic bar maintenance.

Don’t waste your time and money on Oregon bars. The tips are the problem. I’ve logged for 20 years in South East PA and northern MD. Spent time on phone with Oregon engineers working to fix this problem. The rivets in tip sprocket are not the correct size( his exact words).this allows for wobble of tip sprocket and kaboom goes tip. Nothing was ever done. I was to do testing for them. Nothing was ever followed through on this. The rails wear badly within a week of cutting (10-12) trailer loads. Not the bar oil either. I use very good quality oil! They tried to point the finger on that too. Never willing to except the problem is on their product. Seems like most Oregon products are “homeowner” quality now. I will admit I do run Oregon chain. But solely to the fact of price. Would like to run stihl Chain but way too expensive for contract logging budget 16.50 compared to $22.

10-4 on that Jim! Yeah I can't say I've ever heard much good about Oregon bars but I also have never run one. That's disappointing to hear they never acted on your feedback. Now as far as the chain goes, I definitely hear you on the cost issue of Oregon vs Stihl chain. My experience has been that Stihl chain holds an edge longer, leading to longer chain life. Where as with Oregon, my experience has been the chain seems softer than Stihl, needs sharpened more often, especially when the cutters get about halfway used up the Oregon chain seems to really struggle to hold a good edge. So I've always paid the extra for Stihl chain because it seemed worth it to me for the performance gain. What's your take on that?

After a year of use, I'd say the Sugi is probably best bang for your buck. The Cannon is much more durable but also much more expensive
