27. Reading Transistor Datasheets

Ғылым және технология

The operating characteristics of a transistor are all found on its data sheet. Need to know if the part can handle the frequency or give you the gain you need, look at the data sheet. This video is an overview of the AC and DC characteristics found in these sheets and how to interpret them.

Professor please help!! When I was looking for MJE13005 datasheet I found there are two parameters named as VceO(sus)=400VDc and other is Vce=700VDC, so what does these two means?? Now which one is to consider as max withstand voltage rating when choosing this bjt to switch inductive load like smps ?? Please help

Hello, I am not exactly sure what you are looking for; a way to determine if a component can be interfaced with an Arduino board. I don't have such a video but it could be one I try in the future. Thanks for watching.

2:45 why must the emitter be open for this spec to be correct? Does "closed" mean "something is connected to it", regardless of the voltage of the connected thing? -thx

Hi, The test is done no forward bias on base to emitter so the emitter is open - nothings connected to it.

Sir, I can't understand what does this Hfe and DC current gain numbers mean? In your datasheet it says at 10mA Ic and 1V Vce has Hfe ranging from 100-300, what does this range signifies? Are these multipliers or absolute units? I know that certain Amps of current flows between collector to emitter depending on the amount of current passing through base to emitter. I mean how can we decide how much current should we provide between base and emitter to allow a specific amount of current through collector to base? Please help! Thank You

Hello Syed, Hfe is used with AC signals. The manufacturer has designed the devices so that the Hfe falls between these two ranges most of the time. The gain will vary with frequency and even drive current. When designing, it is wise to use the worst case scenario for Hfe. Hope that helps.

I didn't opted for science in high school... so your explanation just went over my head..please pardon my rudeness... can you please help me with the second question on how much of current should pass through base so that a certain amount of current gets passed through collector emitter in a bjt transistor... to be precise I want to figure out how much current should i provide to a 2n5551 bjt base so that it allows 500mA through collector to base with a 5V power supply. Please help and thanks for the reply.

I'm not understanding something. If my collector current (Ic) is expected to be ~80mA, and Ice = 5V, than how do I estimate what the gain will be? Can I use the charts provided? Some data sheets don't have charts. How would I determine the gain in that case?

thanks for a great and informative video. can you help me choosing a lot of MOSFETs for a inverter project. converting 12 or 24 volts to 120v. this seems to be where I am struggling. I am self taught. and have learned a lot from videos like yours. and reading. but I need to build a inverter to light and power my home. I am thinking of two banks of n channel MOSFETs. like up to 10-12 per bank. and want to leave plenty of room for larger transformer. for higher output. thankyou

Hi James, Sorry about the delay but for some reason my emails aren't being delivered. Powering a home is a big task. MOSFETs can do the job. I would recommend a commercial unit but do it yourself is more satisfying. Here is a link to a paper that might answer a lot of your questions. www.wpi.edu/Pubs/E-project/Available/E-project-042507-092653/unrestricted/MQP_D_1_2.pdf Let me know if you need more assistance.
