27" iMac (2020) Review - 2 Months Later (Feat. Mary Spender)

iMac 2-months later! Get CuriosityStream AND Nebula for less than $15/y (26% off!) curiositystream.com/reneritchie
About 2 months ago, Apple mass dropped a brand new Intel and AMD iMac on us. TrueTone display, nano-texture option, 10th generation Comet Lake processors, Radeon Pro RDNA 5000 graphics, up to 128GB of RAM, 8TB of SSD, a 1080p camera that’s no longer a potato, more like… I don’t know.. tasty, tasty, poutine, much better microphone, and a T2 co-processor for real-time encryption, image and audio signal processing, and more.
But it was also about 2 months after Tim Cook announced the advent of Apple Silicon Macs. So… yeah… awkward… maybe? Especially if you’re judge-judy-slapping-your-watch-waiting-dot-gif for those new Apple Silicon Macs, some models of which might take up to 2 years to get here.
And if you need to do real desktop-class work right now, big screen, big silicon, big Bootcamp or Windows VM especially, and yeah, big budget if you take that iMac to just… iMax, how well will last of the Intel and AMD iMacs do for you?
Well, I’ve got Mary Spender of KZread, Nebula, and music fame with me right here, we’re going to tell you all about it, and we’re going to do it right now!

I own a 2015 27" iMac and a Mac Pro 5,1 that I have rarely used in the last few years. I have mainly built Hackintoshes. I gladly bought one of this years iMacs. Specs were good, the 5k display is gorgeous and when I sat down and planned a Hackintosh build, with a decent 4k display, it was right around the same price. I would have saved a few hundred dollars, but would have had to build it, load macOS etc. I do wish they would come down just a little on memory and storage upgrades, but, it seems Apple may be coming around. I am still waiting for a Mac Pro that is not a "Pro" but a mainstream tower. If Apple built a tower like the Mac Pro with the same specs as the 2020 iMac options, they would sell a ton of them. Tim...if you build it we would buy it!

  • @David-xt5ob

Dwayne Stimpson I wish that Apple would build a tower for the rest of us. I’d be very surprised if they did. Computer market is splitting into two which is pro and consumer. Consumer is iOS, chromebook, android where you get computing benefits without the issues of managing a computer. You just want to do your tasks and don’t care. The other is pro market like the tower but that is priced for pros eg the company is paying for it. Those of us that want / need or are just computer people that upgrade gear that need pro gear but without a pro price are kinda being left out. This isn’t an Apple thing but what’s happening across the general computer market. Apple is just ahead of the curve.

Not sure if you are still looking at comments, but interesting you used your laptop for this. I'm trying to decide what resolution and size monitor I want (need!) for my new laptop (when I buy it) and I am wondering what resolution you actually use. The default on the iMac 27 5K is only 2K - 2560 x 1440 or 1440p.... a fantastic resolution and a strong case for 5K monitors that look razor sharp - but it really makes 4K seem difficult to use if you want super sharp text that isn't so minuscule to read. Thanks!

Rene Ritchie Yeah I honestly didn’t see a huge bump even with 128gb RAM and the machine specced out. A few less beach balls and that’s it. My hope is for a fanless iMac. If Apple hadn’t of announced Apple Silicon I may have upgraded but I’m glad they did (very un-apple!).

Rene Ritchie I thought I needed nanotexture but I didn’t get a big enough reduction in glare and it also made the text and graphics less sharp. Not complaining, it’s good that they offer both. I remember when the MacBook Pro was matte and glossy screens were introduced as an upgrade!

Excellent review. I'm a long term iMac user (2007 > 2019) that recently defected to PC. I'd love to go back, & aside from the form factor, the current gen is *almost* enough to tempt me, but... Right now, as in COVID-19 now, I need to work from home, which means running a Windows laptop, which means I *need* target display mode. If they can bring that back, then they have a winner!

Hey Mary & René, I also got my iMac about a month ago and it is great. What makes it better is this: I sold my old iMac and upgraded to this one. Speed is great - the improvements warrants the update. But unlike Mary's, mine is also connected to 2 X 4K Monitors. It wasn't a cheap upgrade, but hey what is ever cheap about Apple. As a Developer, I find the screen much better and also less headaches (much less reflections).

This is a great discussion and a cross-over that I was not expecting. I ordered my new iMac last week. As nice as the nanotexture is, I just could not justify spending the extra $500 on the display. In my case, that money was better spent on upgrading to the i7 model and upgrading the RAM and SSD.

Well I just went onto the UK Apple Store and priced out similar specs for the 27” iMac you feature here alongside an iMac Pro. The big sticking point of course is the RAM, I ‘ordered’ just the 8GB RAM on the 27” iMac as I would go out and buy 128GB RAM sticks and upgrade it myself. So I prided out the 128GB RAM model for the iMac Pro - it was about 3,500UKPound more. When the iMac Pro came out I was talking to a specialist in the Apple Shop and he told me that I could upgrade the RAM in the iMac BUT it had to be the maximum cores model and you could only get it done in the Apple Store. At that time, 128GB RAM was the limit but I think it is double that now. A nice idea but SO expensive.... I am now seriously thinking of going for this 2020 27” iMac.

The difference seems to be the Processor - the iMac Pro has a Xeon Core; what has the 2020 27” iMac got? I think I heard that the XEON did enable you to squeeze more audio tracks out of the system but is this nit picking I wonder?

You said Apple won't put a touch ID sensor in the keyboard because of the cost. We can already use our Apple Watch to log in. That isn't quite as useful as people thing since you still have to sign in after rebooting or logging back on after logging off. Maybe it is useful for using apple pay

I was hoping for Thunderbolt 4, and USB4 ports on the very last Apple Intel iMac Retina 5K, 27-inch system. The reason is I feel is with Thunderbolt 4 being fully compatible with the USB4 standard that we will see a high amount of external devices using the USB4 standard for some years to come. With that it will help drive down the cost of these devices. Now my reason for an Intel host system. I moved "Back to the Mac" as my main system when Apple moved to the Intel processor. The reason is simple in that when Apple stopped supporting a host system with OS updates I could just install another OS on it like Linux, and repurpose the device for other uses around my home. Now with Apple's move to the AXXX processors I do not know if I will still be able to do this. A person can only dream that Apple could support an open source Linux distribution that runs on the AXXX processor line. So at this time I use the Apple iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2014) that the only thing other than memory I have changed is to remove both parts of the 1TB Fusion Drive, and replace it with a Samsung SSD 860 QVO 2TB drive. SSD main boot drives are the only way to go these days. So I will wait until Apples comes out with a AXXX iMac (Retina XK, XX-inch 202X) system. By that time I am hoping that the have moved to the new Thunderbolt 4/USB4 standards, and that someone has come out with a Linux, or other OS that will boot on AXXX host iMac systems. So when Apple comes out with a new AXXX iMac (Retina XK, XX-inch 202X) at that time I will either purchase the current iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, 2020), or the new host system.

Today with some (not all) YT content providers "We need to see a better design, it's old!" Tomorrow "The new 27 or 30" M2 iMac (I'm assuming chip release), has no memory upgrade, it's too expensive and the speakers aren't as good!" It's like watching someone's kid running around with scissors. IT mgr's are familiar with Intel, and coming from the B2B reseller side, I can see why Apple has stretched out the iMac life cycle. Because of my eyesight I have an 27" iMac, the only thing I need in my workflow is Windows Desktop running a PC Quote system which I use to quote ...PC's servers, storage etc, lol the irony. My work flow has doubled in speed, everything works better, even the Mac version of Outlook. Just had to get used to File Mgmt.
