267a. Happy 200th birthday! A party for Scotland’s Union Canal
Throughout 2022, Scottish Canals is holding a series of events to mark the 200th anniversary of the Union Canal which links Edinburgh to Falkirk, and I went along for a two-day flotilla cruise to mark the occasion. This is Part 1 (of 2) of that trip. Part 2 is coming soon, once I've edited it.

Good eye, steady hand, all the earmarks of previous videos aboard your own vessel. I trust viewers will finally accept that the sale did not interrupt some brilliant work. As gorgeous as ever, thank you very much.
"A cavalcade of canal boats" -- How very alliterative! 😉 Love your use of language. Words are the most delightful things.
Even without your own boat David, you still make the best cruising videos on KZread!
What a wonderful trip… and some gorgeous scenery along the canal.. even with the rain.. thank you so much for sharing… looking forward to part 2💜
That's so lovely playing instruments made from a venerable tree that used to grow alongside the canal 🤗
I love it when a plan and a cheese sandwich come together. Thank you David
I sometimes think I am unique in that as a non-Scot I love the pipes - everything about them is great.
A band in the bow of your wide beam, now that's travelling in style !
We are visiting from Virginia and while in Edinburg yesterday, we watched your video about the start of your newest journey. Today we went to the Falkirk Wheel and did the boat trip up and into the tunnel and back. The man at the ticket booth said you were there last week. I told my wife that you were on my top 10 list if people I would like to run into on our trip, right behind Margaret Thatcher. I was informed that she has already passed, so you climbed a notch on the list. We off to Crick on Saturday.
The string quartet was really lovely to hear 👏
Thank you so, David. This Canadian hasn't seen Edinburgh since 1958 at the ripe old age of 12. I really appreciate each of your videos. There is no wrong time to see one and each is greeted with contentment then relaxation. You're still doing marvellous work, so please don't ever stop.
Thank you David for bringing us along =)

Loved the instruments. Beautiful to listen to. Thank you for the journey David 👍
I'm at a loss for words... seems so nice. Things like this are far and few between in the US anymore. Has a very romantic air about the procession. A once in a lifetime event
Love it David. I miss your personal cruising Vlogs but this is the next best thing. Thanks again for all the entertainment👍👍
I could listen to David talk about anything all day long. There’s so much going on around him and he magically includes it all.

I *LOVE* the musical instruments from fallen willow story, and that the craftsman was able to be there! 👌🏼👌🏼
Great video, and nice. to see the quotidian cheese sandwich mmmm.
How fortunate we are to have this gem YT channel presented to us, nay, gifted to us, by such an outstanding guide and benefactor. Kudos sir. Cheers!
Another brilliant vlog, feels like and as good as a bbc1 series. Well done
When I was young I used to go to places with loud music and "Birds!" Now I go to places with bunting and . . . birds. If you are young, cool and have a life, you won't know what bunting is. Then; you are out one day, and feeding the birds, and you find yourself saying "Oooh bunting!!" Followed by "Oh dear, I've just become old!" I now know what bunting is. And now, tragically, I look forward to it. Friend, "Bruce are you coming to the town market". Me "Is there bunting?"
The mention of musicians playing instruments from a tree from a tree that blew down 20 years ago, is heartfelt. The compassion is very amazing of mind and spirit. In a week or so I would gladly watch this video again with joy! Three thumbs up!👍👍👍
Heavens, a Sea Otter! The musical instrument maker is clearly working on canal time 8-)
I am so happy that you know what you are doing. Your documentaries a delightful to watch. Were I still teaching production I would use them as examples of the right way to do things.

with all the orchestral music I keep expecting a Midsomer Murder type video to emerge from this filming!!!
Rain drops diving from the sky...wonderful!
I should be amazed at the video's you produce David but I'm not. Having watched soo many of them, I have become accustomed to their superb quality. This one in particular shares the good work that many organisations do. One comment that struck home was from a lady who pretty much said that "they like to steer the boat. Which in turn shows if they can steer a boat, then they can control their day to day life". That alone was worth making this video.
Top notch my friend. I saw your notice pop up and could not went to get home. Always love your humor. Well done.
I love when you take your camera out on the water.
200 years! They have done so much to fix that canal
It would not be Scotland without some rain😀

Another great episode from the best canal documentary presenter , thank you David, looking forward to part 2.
Love your work, vidiography and commentary. Thank you for covering such interesting stories.
I do enjoy a good fiddle on the canal. And a cheese sandwich ofc.

This is such a great video, it's so good to see you back on the top in everything canal related, you have the gift of storytelling that people around the world all love and enjoy. You make our days a little easier in this changing crazy world. And you show us a wonderful part of day to day living, where people enjoy life and have fun. This is another gem. Thanks so much!
Did the Bow Bands take a bow when they finished? 😉 Nice to see the musicians using their bows to play the instruments made from a bough on the bow, though I did not see anyone wearing a bow. Awesome idea that chap had; instruments from historic events for historic events. I like it a lot!
Always a pleasure cruising the cut with you.
Great to see the rebirth the regeneration Here’s as he said to the next 200 years 🙏🏻
Nice to see some of the Scottish canal.

It's always a good day when you take us along adventuring! Thanks David!
I walk down this canal almost every day, can't believe I missed you!
Thank you, David, for sharing this new territory of canals of Scotland. ❤👍
What a wonderful event. I don't know of any Scottish narrow boat vloggers, so this is my first glimpse of the Scottish canals. Beautiful! Great job showing them to us. All the best from Missouri.
Another day, another coffee, another superb vlog. Life's good....:) Thank you. Cheers.
So nice to cruise with you for this colorful celebration!
David, as much as I miss watching you traveling on on the canals, it seems that it’s given you more time to focus on events like this; I’d call that a net gain for us your followers! Your video reporting skills are unmatched, of course, thank you for another completely enjoyable episode of canal cruising and events.

What Bill said.
The parade of boats, the music and the excitement all made for a most interesting day. The montage took me back to the days of the pandemic and how thankful I was for your pleasing and calming cruising vlogs.
Very interesting and Beautiful vlog, pleasure to watch this👍🏻
I love the stone houses and buildings. The modern buildings don't seem to fit.
What a treat, Scotland and canal boats. My great great grandfather came to Texas from Scotland in 1834 so this was special. Thank you, David.
Splendid presentation and as always you blend history, the present and the personalities alive. Thank you.
A welcome diversion from day to day struggles. A most pleasant video.
Thank you for sharing. Beautiful footage.
Beautiful video. Thanks for sharing. Be well and stay safe.
What a wonderful vlog. I particularly enjoyed the conversation you had with the gentleman who crafted the musical instruments. Well done.
No Kilt David? You do get about , another great vlog just finishing it
Thanks for sharing. 😊 I like to compare the differences between the UK and USA. We have so much in common and yet are so different. 👍👍😊😊 For instance: Scotland's Union Canal "Last of the canals built" -- 1822. USA's first successful canal wasn't even built yet! (original Erie Canal -- aka: "Clinton's Ditch" built 1817--1825) Most of USA's canals have been shut down. The last (3rd) enlarged/improved Erie Canal was built (along a new route) from 1905 -- 1918 (with no towpaths) That canal was modernized until the 1970's when it could no longer successfully compete against the Canadian St. Lawrence Seaway (b. 1954--1959) At the time the state decided to name all four (4) of New York's canals the NYS Barge Canal (with individual branch names) *The (old) individual names have now been returned to each of the canals in NY state.* The canals remain open for recreational boaters and the (occasional) commercial barge. The towpath along the "enlarged/improved" Erie Canal (b. 1835--1862) has been maintained as a bicycling, hiking trail and called the "OLD Erie Canal" Remnants of the original canal (aka: "Clinton's Ditch") remain alongside of the Old Erie Canal. These waterways are used as feeder canals and waste weir (flood control) channels where the modern canal passes by them (mostly in the eastern portion of the modern Erie Canal) Those who work on it call the current canal the Barge Canal. In some areas the existing Old Erie Canal has had the old aqueducts refurbished and those are used for kayaks/canoes. This is an ongoing project that will take years to complete, if it is ever completed because so much of the Old Erie Canal's infrastructure has been destoryed. Oh dear, I'm rambled on .... Sorry David .... since retiement (and the onset of less than optimal health) I spend most of my time Online. Your videos are one of the bright spots ... Thx. 😊😊

I am so very pleased you enjoy them! 😀😀
Terrific video, looking forward to part 2! Nice to hear the musicians play, and quite astonishing to learn their instruments were made by that clever fella from a tree that fell across the canal. Don't be shy about including more of that lovely music, thanks!
Good to hear you are out and about please keep them coming.
I LOVE those instruments made from that downed tree. That is so amazing!
Odd. I somehow missed the existence of the Union Canal when I was wandering Edinburgh but I wasn't really in the know about canals back then (although I had just finished hiking the length of the Caledonian Canal from Loch Linnhe to Beauly Firth and entirely missed seeing Nessie along the way). Anyway, the rain should have allowed you to introduce the most popular Scots word: DREICH - - Scots, adj. Long-drawn-out, protracted, hence tedious, wearisome; damp, wet, grey weather. Although I guess if the rain cleared promptly it might not have applied. 😊
This was a wonderful video thank you very much I enjoy learning how narrow boating is being done in other countries and what they’re celebrating Well done
Brilliant vlog as usual with you loved it. Hope you enjoyed yourself 😘
Beautiful and delicate story telling as always. Thanks for another good quality video!
...Cruising Montage...the very best of 70's folk bands
Ah the rain. Time to get cosy with a wee Scottish lassie. Oh, and a cheese sandwich.
So pleased to see that in Scotland, as in all other parts of the world, people realize how important access to nature really is. See the High line in NYC, cities daylighting streams, and access to rivers and canals being restored.
Finally! My own land.... thanks David.
The best bit of trivia for me was how the canal facilitated the removal of Endinburgh's horse-muck, which must have been tidal back then.
Well that was a different opening! Piping youtube and boating youtube overlap!!! (I’m a piper too!). Lovely to see Scots canals getting an outing.
Oh, David, that montage had some glorious footage!! Thank you for sharing this event with us. It was just what I needed today.
Many thanks David, for a great video Very colourful and most encouraging. Looking forward to the next episode as my wife and I love the Falkirk wheel. Take care mate, Barrie.
Scotland is really beautiful... I like seeing the modern housing and buildings along the canal too.. looking forward to seeing part 2..
Been awhile Dave as my cat tipped a cup of earl grey on my laptop here in hawaii. love it love it! keep up the vlogs my friend! God Bless!
I’ll bet you were glad that wasn’t you going into the weed hatch! Beautiful cruise.
Hello David Sir this was an Excellent tour of the Canal ways in Scottland thank you for filming
Thanks a lot for taking us on this journey with you, I was amazed to see how peaceful and quiet this canal seems to be. Atb, looking forward to the next vlog.
Enjoyed that, liked the hand made Scottish violin - Jockivarius perhaps.
Absolutely Fabulous! And for your next challenge 😂 how about the Caledonian Canal 60 miles, 29 locks, 10 swing bridges and the most stunning scenery going Inverness to Corpach nr Fort William 😂👍 seriously this is a great video as always and good info, interviews & commentary Thank you
Lots of history there. Thanks for posting David.
Watch out for the Billy Boys 😂… Referring to episode 264. Thanks for the share always top notch production! 👍🏻✌🏻🇨🇦
Wonderful vlog. Lovely to see the musicians and the bespoke musical instruments. Good to see know about things like the Sorted Project. Thanks so much for doing this!
Immensely enjoyed this video that you beautifully planned, filmed, edited, et al. Thank you dearly.
2:22 He's loving life is that lad.
Beautiful canal made even better with the sounds of bagpipe at the beginning. Nice filming and thank you.
Thank you, from the Philippines!
Oh wow thanks for sharing such a historic event! Gloria 🐂
What fun and nice to see this kind of celebration still happening. My mouth watered with the cheese sandwich, I have to say 🥪🥪🥪
I've walked along the Broxburn length of this canal many times. Reminds me of peaceful walks on long summer nights and berry picking with the kids in Autumn :)
Very nice coverage of the 200 year celebration. Our County fair is 200 this year also. The Great Geauga County Fair, Burton Ohio.
Wonderful cruise and scenery. Thank you David for making my evening relaxing and showing another lovely canal.
Scotland is just such a wonderful country I’m actually watching this near Inverness on my hols (keeping away from airports)

Enjoy 😊.
The tree. The storm. The instruments. All made in 8 weeks!! And the bunting 😳 So much bunting. Such beautiful, carnivalesque confusion. I kept anxiously expecting something to happen, like the feeling you get watching a Fellini film. (or perhaps that’s just me) 🤣🤣 🙂🐿🌈❤️
absolutely enjoyed the trip thanks again David.Safe driving home
Wonderful and educational. Enjoyed it immensely. I must say, I think I better understand your perspective on selling your boat, when watching the crew diving into the weed hatch to clear a fouled prop. 😀 This way, you stay close to the canals, but with a bit less bother. Thank you again for a lovely VLOG.
Wonderful quality content , as always. You're such a great ambassador for the narrowboat community. Many thanks David, hope you're doing well.
That first Group playing music in the Bow or the boat ... I swear .. they were in Mary Poppins in animated form ..!
A favorite line from this lovely excursion at 11:33 "No boat trip is complete without a trip down the weed hatch to remove a load of old grot that's caught around the propeller" ʕ•́؈•̀ʔ
Love it, and considerably more "chatter" onboard, almost a shock after watching your solo voyages
It's so nice to see full time ppl who live/travel on a Ship/Boat give out good info on how its done and makes me want to do the same thing with my family for fun and safety + love you KZread
