They were mainly used on suburban services between Kildare and Dublin, Dublin - Drogheda and Cork - Cobh. Due to the rolling stock shortages of the 90's they were sometimes put on intercity services out of necessity. This didn't go down well with passengers needless to say.

Them were the days! Have we made progress scrapping the mark 3 carriages and sparcely manning our new trains?

The Mk3s had plenty more service years left in them, unfortunately IÉ fell madly in love with DMUs and there was no going back. As much as I hate units they have much better acceleration and failure rates are lower hence why they were always eventually going to be the future for passenger services.

@@TheIrishMainline i agree with the advantages of MU's. But has to ASK, was the purchase of MK4 necessary? Could one have used MK3 to expand the Enterprise to an hourly service? IE even had MK 3 control cars. Why did IR buy MK3 suburban stock when the rest of the world went MU?

@@martinbitter4162 IÉ considered a DMU option for the Cork line ahead of the Mark 4s but the 201s were only 10 years old at that stage (2006) and so the Push/Pull option was favourable. The Mk3 DVTs were limited to 70mph due to their bogie design so weren't suitable for the Cork or Belfast lines. The Mk3 Push/Pull sets were purchased in the same batch as the standard Mk3 coaches so probably a cost saving move.
