As time goes on, I’m getting closer and closer to replacing every piece of furniture in my house with something I built with my own hands. A lofty goal! This King Size Bed is one of the bigger ticket items on that shrinking list!
I used Cherry as my primary wood while featuring Walnut panels. I like the contrast, but over time the Cherry will darken and the Walnut will actually get lighter. When it’s all said and done the contrast won’t be so dramatic.
A Note About Tools
The tools I used in this video are undoubtedly “high-end” including the JDS Multi-Router and the Festool Domino. While the Domino has made numerous appearances on the show, the Multi-Router is making its debut. Most folks aren’t going to be able to justify the cost of either tool so rest assured that standard mortise and tenon joints (which I’ve shown you how to make numerous times) will suffice. In fact, the plans I’ve included show standard mortise and tenon joints instead of loose tenons as shown in the video.

Mark Thank you for the great design and free plans. I also built mine out of cherry. I also built two side tables, a dresser and a taller chest of drawers. Thanks again. Great show!
Apart from the awesome skills and tool porn I really appreciate a bed video with NO mentioning of Caspar. Thank you. Great editing as well. Thumbs up.
Mark, you are my Asian design muse! I just finished my queen bed based on your design, adding rail and central supports for slats. I used red oak from a dead tree in my backyard, slabbed and dried for a few years in the basement, and walnut panels. I also made your pagoda-style memorial urn for somebody close to me. Thank you for the beautiful work and inspiration.
I have been watching a lot of "bed frame" videos because my wife wants me to make one. Most of the ones that I have seen are posted by guys like me, DIYers. So, when I see one posted by a professional like yourself.....man! what a difference. The techniques and craftsmanship are WORLDS apart. This thing turned out beautifully.
Right on! Your house is going to be one hell of a showroom.

I love that you put out free stuff like this in addition to all your other stuff. Thanks very much...it's helps us new woodworkers out a ton.
Very nice, Marc! Building a bed is on my long list of projects. This has to be the best, most concise bed building video available yet.

I am a beginning woodworker and seeing how experienced I am a beginning would worker and see how experienced woodworkers building just give me more come into continue my passion for woodworking great work big admirer
Very nice bed and video, my wife has been nagging me to build a king size bed as well. The multi router does look like a sweet machine, wonder how many people are gonna complain, "well if i had that machine.... wah wah wah" haha
Marc, this is an awesome project and I continue to be blown away by the free content on your site. I was sure this was going to be a guild build but was pleasantly surprised to see free plans and a video. I think I will have to make one of these now, I'm out of excuses! Thanks for all you do for the community. Your site and content are a big reason that my shop is now full of tools and sawdust.
Amazing build and video Marc! Thanks for showing us the multi-router. I enjoy seeing the other tool options out there and learning about alternate ways to build things.
This bed is a work of art, seriously!
The cherry and walnut with the poly finish looks fantastic. Simple but elegant design. Matching night stands perhaps?

Really lovely Bed. my Mrs. would learn to cook properly if i built her a bed like that. thank you for your hard work and for sharing with us :)
That is one GREAT looking Frame, and I am sure Nicole is really happy. Looking forward to seeing the actual plans
Great build, and very cool to see the multi router put through its paces. I love the clamp system on that thing!
I love that idea of clamping a piece of scrap to the other side of your router edge guide. good practical tip that I'll use for sure.
Again and Again you amaze us ALL with your work !!! You teach us and show everone how we as Beginner or pro We can be a Great woodworker Thank you very much .... Keep Inspiring one and all ....
You cannot beat the look of cherry and walnut together. That turned out great!
Those joints were flippin' perfect. If you've got that kind of coin to spend, I don't see how you can get much better than that.
At first look the bed wasn't really my style although it is a great design. I don't know if it's watching the build or what but it's really growing on me. Even as I type I want to change how I originally felt so I can now say I love it. Great bed and awesome video. Hope this video felt like that balance you've been looking for. I for one think it was outstanding.
Wow!!! I have missed a classic wood whisper how to video so much!! Thank you so so much! Beautiful work!!
Excellent video, tutorial and beautiful project. After watching your productions all these years that's all you make. Waiting on the next one Marc.
It's amazing what a man with a shop full of expensive tools and high opinion of himself can accomplish ;) The bed looks awesome man, that multi router looks like a lot of fun!

+Matt Lane LOL thanks dude!
Always making beautiful pieces while producing really quality videos! I have learned so much from you! Thank you very much for sharing your amazing content with us! By the way when you applied that first coat of finish on the walnut I just hit my jaw on the laptop!
Wicked build! Little carpenter trick with the chop saw, if you need a little more cut depth put a sacrificial board under what you are cutting. This raises up the board into the bigger part of the blade. You can easily gain an extra few inches of depth.
I'm making your bed frame as a present for my daughter and her boyfriend. The free plans are a plus. I'm a subscriber.
Mark I love your videos. 3-4 years ago you were my introduction to woodworking and incidentally watching woodworking on KZread, by far my favorite way to spend my time now. I can't afford a guild membership. Are there any plans develop any kind of more REGULAR content on your KZread channel? You have such a wonderful archive of knowledge on your channel but it seems to only be premium content available regularly from you anymore. With respect, a fan.

+KF7AIK I do what I can. I have two young kids now and my actual shop time is much more limited than it used to be and when pressed for time, I focus on the things that put food on my family's table. So I would say it's best to expect the free content to continue to be regularly irregular. :)

+The Wood Whisperer I understand. I have 6 girls, that's why I can't afford a guild membership. 😄 Your knowledge and production value are so unique and high quality that I appreciate everything you put out. I really benefit from your teaching style. Like I said I woodwork because of you. Maybe I'll have to budget in some of your guild projects. What's a good starter one? Keep up the great work.
Only one month ago, I used that exact same Rockler rail hardware connector for some rails I made for my convertible-from-crib to queen bed ... and some rails for my cousin's bed that needed to go from full size to queen. I really like them because they are hidden, but they do require quite a bit more work than other connector options.
Nice build, re-sawing that walnut, very nice! Another idea for the long clamps is to use ratchet straps or a rope "tourniquet."
I don t understand how some people "dislike" a video like this. Like, what was wrong with this? haha great build again Marc!

Jealous haters. He's not only good at his trade he's an artist and be knows how to make videos and explain what he's doing.
This is an awesome, well detailed wood project, tnx Mr. Spagnuolo for sharing it and inspiring others to get into fine wood working!!!
You're a genius, master of carpentry; i wish i could someday woodworking like you. Thank you very much.
Beautiful design. If mine wasn't over 150 years old I would most assuredly be looking into a bed like this. The age of the bed is the only thing that has saved it from the foot board being altered due to a very painful few incidents.
Very nice. I made a platform bed that takes 2 double size mattresses and stores twenty storage boxes underneath. It is big but my wife and I love it.
Another great video and build Marc! Good justification for buying the multi-router which I've been eyeballing for some time. Must show this one to the wife!
Indeed, Wandel's pantorouter and its commercial cousin are great tools. Thanks for the suggestion.
Thank you. The bed is a piece of art. Well done. The cherry finish is great.
Nice clean simple work. You've got an excellent sense of logic and method. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience. I personally prefer random grain, and not box-matching, mainly because box-matching can be mistaken for veneered panels. Just personal preference.
Marc, never thought about it before, but it's nice seeing you use different brands of hand power tools. I always enjoy seeing the uber fancy items, but seeing a Milwaukee tool or other more common brand here and there is equally enjoyable. As always nicely done!
Another fantastic build! I love seeing the fancy expensive tools! It's a reminder for us to see what options are out there. Plus that multi-router looks fun to use!

+the wood whisperer welcome back mark its nice to see you again with your bed project.
Looks great Marc. I'm impressed that you glued up so much in one shot. I'd be terrified.
Nice to finally see the multi-router in action!
I watch a lot of woodworking channels but you are the gold standard for instructional videos you make difficult projects seem simple and i salute you for that you are one of the main influences for me to quit my day job and become a professional woodworker I cant thank you enough.

Your attention to the detail in the design is always very impressive. Beautiful build.
I love the way you explain things in your videos Marc, you are a fantastic educator.
nicely done Marc! - at 7:29 I had that exact problem when I built my sons bed with the same hardware
Thanks, this was a huge help! I really liked the way you called out all of your shortcuts.
Cool design, Marc! Nice to see the Multi-touch in action.

Thanks for sharing your great techniques. The walnut finish was an inspiration.
Wow great video. The bed design looks like Japanese styling with rustic flare.
Where does he get all those wonderful toys? (Joker quote) Excellent build video. The grain on those walnut panels... wow. Eye popping.
That's some precision work with those tenons. Came out great.
Always loved your work Marc. It was you who inspired me to build my workshop!
Beautiful build Mark. The panels are wicked gorgeous indeed. Great tip on the pre finish also. best to you and yours
I have not seen a video with your new tools. I would be much appreciated a dedicated video showing the new ones compared with the old Festool's. Great work, as usual!

Marc fantastic build. I love the detail and quality of your work. Nichol must be proud. Oh and thank you for the free plans. Greg
Nice job! , beds always take up so much room in the shop,
Great video! Hard to believe some people pull off exact mortices by hand
That is a beautiful bed. I can spot a drum seat anywhere. :) Nice job!
Still some of the best free WW'ing content on the net.
Beautiful job, love the walnut combined with the cherry.
Hello! Your videos are as enjoyable as you are technically proficient: which is substantial!! Thanks much.
Beautiful work as usual. Way beyond my comfort level.
Absolute art work. And I learned some things that never occurred to me. Thank you so much
Nice job Mark, Love the finish and the Walnut headboard!!
Love your video's man, thanks for the free plans!! One thing that all of us can do without mortise jigs is make a simple dial-rod joint. There strong and will hold up well in this case.
Really cool video. The bed came out super awesome. The tappers and curves make the difference.
That walnut is beautiful! Great video Mark
Not even watching the video but just wanted to comment that I love the design of this. Very nice :)
Simple yet beautiful.
Fantastic work. Like the bookmatched panels.
Fantastic, Marc! Love the design and wood selection. Thanks for the build!

Since your finish looked so good, I have just used Sealcoat and Satin Wipe-on Poly on a cherry mission style bed I've built. Couldn't be happier with the results. Thanks so much for the direction
very nice, thanks for sharing. miss your free videos. Looks lovely
great job - I learned a couple of new things (for me) about finishing. Now if I could only get that multi router wrapped to look like a screwdriver I might be able to get into the house....
i love the head/foot board design..and that WaCkY WaLnUt!!?? looks great with the cherry..☆♤☆♢☆
Gorgeous bed, beautifully made. Congratulations.
Beautiful looking bed
Nicely done. Good thing for the rubber tiles; you could have hurt the tushie.
Great looking bed!
Awesome job, would work well for our sleep number bed too. Nice Shop safety tip at the end.
SWEET BED. Great job Mark.
Great design, great build video, great save on the blooper cut on the end.
Awesome design Mark! I'm glad to see another free video from you. I really enjoy the projects and look forward to more.
U do such ja nice Work man. Sorry for my bad english. Im from Germany and not perfect in english. Im in a apprenticeship as Carpenter. Second Year. My Workshop is not so nice as yours. I hope i became a good Carpenter like u in the Future :)
I've not seen a multi router in use before, that thing is bad ass!
Cool build, great editing! A lot of content to put together ;-). 10/10 👍
Nice design. Nice recovery, btw.
This is absolutely gorgeous! Thank you for the free plans and all the great instruction. I have been looking for a good bed design and this one really fits my style. I don't know that I can justify getting a Domino for this, but I may try to dive into doing this all by hand...or...buy a Domino anyway!
Awesome project and video.
Great video. Love the design.
As usual, great video Marc. I definitely want to build a bed in the future, and I'll certainly steal...i mean borrow...some design elements!
Wonderful work!! Thanks for the plans.
