25th anniversary Leap The Dips' historic reopening at Lakemont Park (5/31/1999)

Today marks the 25th anniversary of the reopening of Leap The Dips at Lakemont Park in Altoona, PA after sitting abandoned since 1985. Leap The Dips is the world's oldest roller coaster and was designed by Edward Joy Morris and built by the Federal Construction Company and opened on June 2nd, 1902. This historic ride as well as the Skyliner which was built in 1960 are facing an uncertain future as they are not in operation this year due to high maintenance costs and declining attendance. We here at the HCF want to assure Lakemont Park that as a group of nearly 30k members, we are more than willing to pitch in to raise money to help maintain both Leap The Dips and the Skyliner so long as they assure us that they will remain standing. We hope there is light at the end of the tunnel for these historic coasters and that their preservation will continue.

I’m glad I got to ride this shortly after it reopened. It’s surprisingly thrilling. I’m really disappointed in the park’s current management, which this year decided to get rid of all their rides. Leap the Dips will remain, but inoperative.
