Leap the Dips Review, Lakemont Park Side Friction Coaster | World's Oldest Operating Coaster

Leap the Dips is the world's oldest operating roller coaster. Located at Lakemont Park in Altoona, Pennsylvania, this ride opened back in 1902. The ride has been SBNO for several years, but it has been running again since 2020. And don't be fooled by this ride's modest speed or lack of restraints, it offers some genuine thrills.

Seeing you comically fly out of your seat on those small dips shows how powerful this classic can be. I guess Leap the Dips does live up to its name.

“This results in the seats paddle-boarding your heinie and throwing everyone into the air” …this is perhaps the most accurate description of this coaster’s airtime if ever I’ve heard one. Great review!

I actually rode this last year in the spring, and it had me laughing in genuine joy the whole way around. I also convince my 80 year old dad to ride it with me in the pouring rain. He took the back and after we got off, he said while he liked it. He would not do it again as it was a bit too rough for him.

Loving the smiles/laughs of passengers. Leap the Dips is a metaphor for the coaster itself + its run in the park. On again OFF again. Leaping and dipping through the decades. Pennsylvania is the birthplace of the American Roller cOaStEr.

I totally agree. It has so much character, and was so much fun. I did not expect it to be so good. I visited on a Saturday, and there were no lines, yet I was told that it was a busy day for them. Delgrosso's had a huge crowd that day. I got 16 rides on Leap the Dips on 2 different cars. On my final ride, I joined a family of 3 for LROTN, riding in the back with the dad, and it was easily the best ride. That car was running very wild, and I loved it. Midday, it started raining during my ride, and it valleyed on that final dip before the station. They had me walk through the middle of the structure back to the station as they pushed that car in. It was a cool experience. That was when they switched out cars. That first car was wild enough before that valleyed ride, but the 2nd car was better.

I don't think they run it in the rain, and my valleying on that ride might be why. It didn't start raining until I was at the top of the lift hill. It did only rain for 10 minutes.

Leap the Dips, what an old piece of amazing history, I am so SO glad the park is not only still keeping this thing in operation but not making major modern improvements to it. I'm glad there is no computer or panel or anything, the fact you literally push the train out of the station and use a level fir a brake is absolutely crazy. Its like sketchy because how old it is but very fun and historic, especially with the anti roll backwards literally being the car knocking wooden planks out if the way. But the fact this has tiny drops with no restraint and not even upstop wheels is just insane, especially on a 120 year old ride!

I've rode this ride a number of times growing up as we lived near Lakemont... I don't like roller coasters and although this one isn't a big thrill, the fact that it's wood and hecken old is very scary... I didn't realize it was THE oldest though. Pretty neato.

SOMEONE NEEDS TO SAVE THIS COASTER! I live in Pittsburgh which is about a 2 hour drive and always call the park to confirm operations. I have been there 4 times since 2020 but have only been able to ride it once. One time we stopped on the way to Knobels on a day it was supposed to be operating. When we got there they said it was running but they had to close it due to staffing issues. The following year it was running when we entered the park so we decided to get a bite to eat first. When we made our way over to the coaster they closed it because of a rotten piece of wood they just noticed that made it unsafe. Really! Just noticed! Who inspected it that morning or any other day that summer? Wood doesn't rot overnight! Last summer we went there for it's well advertised birthday. Again it was running when we got there but the line was long so we walked over to the Skyliner and rode it first....which also needs a major re-track. When we returned to Leap The Dips it was closed because the chain lift was broken. After hanging out for a couple hours we watched as the only maintenance man worked tirelessly to get it running but they declared it down for the rest of the day. I got to talk to the manager of the park and it was clear they are having serious financial issues. She said Leap The Dips is difficult to keep running. The Skyliner is in desperate need of painting but she said they can't manage the $15,000 it would take to do it. She mentioned that they just did re-tracking on Skyliner but your lower back can't tell. Leap the dips is looking pretty shabby as of the 2023 season. I wish Lakemont would put it up for sale so someone like Knobels could buy it and give it a safe home. I truly think with the economy today Lakemont Park will end up letting Leap The Dips go into a state of disrepair and deterioration again or it will mysteriously burn down like Blue Streak did at Conneaut Lake Park.

I called before visiting Lakemont and made sure to ride Leap the Dips immediately in case it went down. I've heard it can have wood pieces break more easily than other coasters.

I think I said that I did that but was shut down twice when I called it closed while I was in the park before I got to ride it. I am only concerned with Leap The Dips surviving the financial problems of the park. That's why I think Lakemont should sell it to another park for relocation as they did with most or their flat rides. Parks that in these times will more likely to make mistakes putting the ride in jeopardy. @@CanobieCoaster

I'd compare some of the airtime on Leap The Dips to the second drop on Camden Park's Big Dipper. It's quite fun. That said, if you really want violent airtime at Lakemont, ride Skyliner in the back row. And make sure its seatbelt is loose. That's legit ejector with a buzbar (while Pheonix may be more well-rounded, I'd say Skyliner actually has stronger airtime). Both coasters at Lakemont are highly underrated. Surprised not a lot of enthusiasts have been there honestly. DelGrosso's-Lakemont is very doable for just 1 day. It's easy to make a stop at Lakemont between Kennywood and Hershey which are both big time coaster destinations. Altoona actually seems to be a pretty big city too, from the looks of it.
