My dad took me to my first record store when I was 13-14. The Kinks Greatest Hits was the first album I bought (well, he bought for me). I had sold my collections over the years as well but always kept that Kinks album. I’m 40 now and still have that album in my collection. My father had passed away years ago but just pulling out that Kinks record takes me me back to those days and brings a smile to my face. It’s a moment in time that I can always go back to and that’s why vinyl is so special to me. To all of us. It’s in our DNA. ❤ Great video, Dillon. 🤘

All you speak of is true. I was buying records as a teenager, and in my twenties, I would say 2/3 of my collection had been stolen from storage. That was very upsetting as most of my collection was derived from my time spent learning sound engineering. But I was so busy, I just kept going. It wasn't until I was married, in my 40s that I got back into vinyl. And even then, I had to get a new turntable, open up the remaining collection. I'm now back up to over a thousand records and about 100 box sets... finding friends for record store days. Really, I'm just loving it again. I still have hundreds of cds, too. It's such a joy, that I had to get a second turntable... so I have one in my living area and one in my office. Long live vinyl. Thanks for sharing some of your journey.

Man - don't sell yourself short - your knowlege is vast and deep. I've been collecting records for 45 years, have a wikdly eclectic taste and most of the albums you promote I have never heard of. I hope to get up to your shop one day to gather up some treasures.

35 must be nice. I'm 62 and been collecting and selling for over 40 years. I wish I would have kept everything I ever bought. Excellent video brother.

I'm almost 17 and started collecting at 14- my first record was my step grandma's copy of the Beatles greatest hits from 1965- 67❤

Starting when I was around 5 in 1970 , my then teenage uncle used to play his records for me. He introduced me to Zeppelin, Hendrix, Sabbath, Doors, Stones, Beatles, Floyd, Purple, Who, Bowie and so on. That kickstarted my music obsession that has never lost momentum.

45 years purchasing records and CDs and albums and cassettes...lol glad to see you enjoying life my friend God bless you and your family

I started in 66 after mowing a yard for a dollar, went to the store and bought rain/paperback writer picture sleeve and have been a vinyl junkie ever since! Owned a record store for about ten years and still can’t get rid of all my stuff!! Great job and have been watching this channel for years!! Love it!! Thanks Dillon!! It’s about the music

That's the great thing about records is so many are associated with memorable parts of our life - they're like old friends. The first record I ever bought was in the late 1960s - The Best of the Bee Gees. Played the heck out of it. Seeing it in record stores still brings a smile. I enjoy your channel very much - thanks for sharing your life of records.

I got into collecting records just before I turned 10, I sneaked off to the record shop and came home with Slade's Goodbye to Jane and Suzi Quatro's 48 Crash on 7" singles, I thought I was going to get killed but my parents were both into music and thought it was funny. A few months later it was my 10th birthday and my dads sister bought me a first UK pressing of Dark Side of the Moon telling me to look after it as it will one day be worth something (she worked in the music industry and I had no idea what a first pressing was). So anyway fast forward 15 years and my 3 to 4 thousand strong collection was stolen, man that shattered me still to this day 35 years later. I never bought vinyl again after that just CD's until 6 months ago, I was at a friends place looking trough his collection reminiscing with nearly every record I pulled out, because just like you every record tells a story. Now I'm attempting to replace them if I can fingers crossed. I just hope one day I can afford to replace that first pressing of Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon and I will die a happy man. Thanks for the excellent video and story telling Dillon you made my day. Cheers and have a good one.

MC5! Another Detroit-area band. Well done. I saw them perform 6 times in my life (more than any other group) -- the weirdest site was at a college dormitory "mixer" wherein male and female students traditionally socialized to dance in the empty cafeteria. The MC5 set up their stuff, and when they started to play, blowing the ceiling and walls away, and spewing drool and sweat all over the place, everyone's jaw dropped and there wasn't any dancing. Just startled staring.

Onya Dude! You are an inspiration. Record collecting is a lifelong journey- records are a reflection of you, your life, your stories that go with each one. Just like books are to others. Your collection is mind boggling but your problem lies in “you can’t even listen to all you get in.” Dig in and dig that music!

I bought my very first record in 2002 at age 16. It was The Who Live At Leeds for ONE DOLLAR. In those days anything over 5 bucks for an LP felt like a kings random. Back when cd was king and new Who albums were 20 bucks on compact disc, records were actually a budget alternative. I still have that same album, I’ve sold and bought huge chunks of my collection over the years but always kept that same record.

I'm only a couple of years older than you and my tastes have changed so much since I started. You've opened me up to a lot of new genres so I thank you for that. Love the channel -- and happy birthday! Your advice to newcomers is right on. I love it when people tell me about the records that matter to them. It's like getting a friend's personal tour of the town they live in (or grew up in). Even if I have my own experiences with the place, I love having the opportunity to see it anew through someone else's POV. I think of a record collection "tour" the same way. I had to purge all but maybe 200 of my records when I was in my early 30s. I had them in storage in a garage in the early '90s and just before I took off on a long trip through Europe and down to Egypt the owner of the building had a new tenant who needed the space, so I had to unload them fast -- to a guy who was starting... a used record store! Years later, I had to start all over again -- and I did repurchase a LOT of stuff that I ached to have back in my life (going back to my childhood in the '60s and '70s), when thrift stores and music stores started selling LPs again... but that was in the later '90s and 2000s when you could still find good records in good condition for $5-$10, or even less. You can still find them, but you have to do some exploring...

Pretty cool evolution dude. You never forget that stuff imprinted on you from an early age until young adulthood. I got lucky, my Dad was a record collector, so I grew up with the good stuff, some eclectic stuff, and some straight up weird stuff. Out of 3 brothers, 2 of us became record collectors. The old man has whittled the collection down thru the years, and every time I visit, I snag one or two. He also had some cool vintage gear too...still has a piece or two left. But the memories of everything will live on. In many ways, I wish I could go back to those pre internet, pre FleaBay, pre Discogs days, when you actually had to put the leg work in to find stuff. And when you found something killer, it made your whole year. Great vid dude.

Happy birthday Dillon! I’ve been a record collector since childhood. Mainly 45’s then onto Lp’s. Yes, I too sold my collection back in the mid 80’s when CD’s came out. I regretted it a couple years later when most albums I had were not available on CD. Started buying records again in the late eighties and acquired my original collection. Took a few years though.

Hey I doubled you last week brother! 70 on 7/25! Still have the first two records I ever bought. First Santana and Allman Brothers Idlewild South.

Good to hear your record collecting history..selling records can hurt.

I’m 12 years older than you and went through a music stage with CD’s from 1998-2005. I had like 150 and was stoked to have that much. Got into classic rock because of that. Then I stopped buying. Fast forward to 2020. I already had about 25 records. Some form my mom and some I bought. Then I just started to collect hard cause the pandemic was going on and had nothing to do. Got myself an lp-60xbt and was off to buying a lot of vinyl from thrifting, local shops, big box and eBay. Then found Discogs and even bought more. I’m now well over 1,600 albums. The addiction is real. But it’s fun. The rabbit whole is so real lol. Collecting like you opened me up to jazz, funk, jazz fusion, Prog and soul/r&b. Vinyl is my music outlet. I can’t play an instrument l, but I know how to spin a great record.

Great video I love how the enthusiasm for vinyl can cross all continents kindred spirits. I collect a lot of punk 7 inch vinyl from the late 70s never thought I would go down the 7 inch route but it is quite addictive! Dan (Leeds England)

Love the statements on why you started the channel. Honest reply, that's exactly why I started Weird Spins as a channel... just to be part of a community of enthusiasts again. When I was a kid and I had a table buying and selling and trading at the flea market, I wasn't even old enough to be in junior high school when I started at let alone drive... but I made friends among all of the other vendors and collectors that would hang out there. As an adult, with a resurgence of the vinyl boom and starting collecting over again, the closest people that I know that are into this live about an hour and a half out. So coming to KZread with is a great option for being able to communicate and share with other people who are enthusiasts.

Love your channel and you've got me collecting again after a decade! Also , you did a video talking about when you were a kid, getting lost from your family on a trip when you went to look for records. Can you tell me what that video was, I want to watch it again. Thanks.

H,Dillon you have brought a lot of obscure LP'S that not many have heard of, to the forefront and enlighten more people to them. I have collected since the early 70's with hindsight, I wish I'd bought more Psychedelic and hard rock, then sticking with the mainstream bands at the time. Love what you do keep it up.

Man I feel you on selling your collection. I sold my collection a ago and getting everything back is going to be tough because they're worth a lot more now, and I'm constantly getting into new stuff so it's hard for me to be buying records that I've heard a million times. Like Pink Floyd for instance, they're probably my favorite band and of course I need to own all their albums like I used to, but I just find myself spending the money on new releases. Oh well, I'll get them all back in time, just as you have :D

I frequently blindly buy collections for reselling. It's like a grab bag. I listen to a lot of stuff i find in the boxes and I think it's great to discover new music that way.

Very cool. I always like the more personal VC videos. I'm a bit older but your pathway seems kind of similar to mine, especially my childhood where I was way more interested in records and guitars than sports and spending a lot of time alone absorbing as much music as I could, though I got into jazz a bit sooner. My parents were in the antique business so I always had an appreciation for vintage stuff. I think the first record I bought with money out of my pocket was the first Doors album in another antique store when my dad took me on a merchandise hunting trip with him, though I had a stack of records handed down from relatives already... Nobody who is really into this hobby thinks they know everything (and if they do they're kidding themselves) because there is always always more to learn and discover. I always get ideas about new stuff to investigate from your vids (I'm listening to 'Soul Impressions' on streaming as I type) Keep up the good work, man

I sold my collection to pay the rent! Sure, I still regret it to this day, but at least I was being responsible. The only solace I can find is that I sold them before the LP market got taken over by CD’s. I slowly rebuilt my music library with compact discs. Now I’m back with vinyl, and it’s amazing how popular it has become again! Your show is a real learning experience!

Dude. Thanks for the video. I have a similar passion. The joy seems to be the same. My collection has meaning to me. There's a lot where I have stories and very specific memories about them. My collection is smaller (abt 3000) but it is well loved. I play guitar as well. It's the best, innit? My loves include punkk, indie rock, some classic, reggae and jazz. It's kind of ridiculous to pick a sub genre & hold on to it. But, like yourself I say I'm a rock n roller who loves all kinds. My mind blowing/life changing albums are London Calling, Electric Ladyland, Blonde on Blonde and Fear of a Black Planet. When that came out I realized rap wasn't just the corny stuff on the radio. It was also radical and kick ass. Thanks dude. I'm now gonna dig thru my collection 😊

been following you since the pandemic , and love your suggestions! sadly i dont live in the states, but i do have a aunt that lives in Rock Hill , i had a few questions ... 1) if I send her 100$ (i dont earn much overseas here LOL) is that enough to pick up a hand full of Led zeppelin , the stones , jimi hendrix and a few other bands vinyl ...doesnt have to be in great condition just playable .. 2) how do you suggest she bring them here? check-in suitcase ? is their some sort of hard case for vinyl to travel with thats light weight ? 3) looking for zeppelin I-4 + THOH The stones BB , LET IT BLEED jIMI ARE YOU ... AND ELECTIC and if money is left over a few other lesser known rock albums you suggested in the past that i fell in love with like Flower Travellin' Band ... i ask you because my aunt a 70+ year old lady and wouldnt know any of this info .. thanks for the reply!!

Thank you! To give you another perspective I bought my first album in 1972 and currently have 5.1K although have worked out over time I have owned about 12K. I guess ebay has made traders of of all of us and due to insane prices I do have to sell to buy these days (the more obscure the prog/psych/kraut/fusion the better!).The UK view is , loving early 70s onwards US blues/southern rock and earlier psych that they are all but unfindable over here (I have a right arm for anyone who can offer me Big Brother Ernie Josephs Confusion!) but over the years, finding Vertigo swirls (I am missing 6) has been easier and was once cheap! Funnily enough one of my best finds was a market stall run by a guy who traded in Northern Soul records (that is a UK thing!) and he had a couple of crates with 3 for £5 albums of stuff he knew nothing about. I have an original nr mint copy of the July album and picked it up with the first Bull Angus lp and an original Can Tago Mago dbl! Keep up the great work!

Ive reached 55 years of age and have decided that i no longer need to hold onto my record collection so im now in the process of selling it. Same with CDs, dvds books etc. Time to move on and id rather sell tol people who collect records than give them/throw them away.
