Wow! I didn't know you could tell so much about a radio that won't turn on and before you even crack it open! I just learned something major big!

Chris Parnell Hi Chris, thanks for feed-back.

In a case like this, there are two other techniques which are quicker and/or can (at least) greatly reduce the number of leads you need to disconnect. 1) Use the current-limited supply (as you did) and scan the board with an I/R camera. These are cheap now and are readily available at the local hardware store. The hot spot will tell you where all the current is passing through. 2) Go back to the old methods. Use a current wand like the HP 547A to "sniff" out where the current is congregating. The 547 will detect DC current. It has a Hall Effect sensor. Of course, for tracing AC currents, a common current loop can be attached to a scope. Either of these techniques can get you zeroed-in on a single square inch of circuit board which is almost always sufficient to reveal the shorted component.

That is it. Most of the time it is the finals that blow, usually due to the antenna not being tuned properly or the voltage supplying the finals is too high. That was a common problem on the Cobra 200GTLDX, which was a nice 10 meter radio other than they tend to blow the finals do to too much voltage. Once fixed they are good.

Yes the Ultra Force more name than being! Actually a nice box but processing under everything cannon! The same with AE 487 circuit board covered with solder curtain short circuit preprogrammed sad to sell such devices I would have a stomachache!

AMAZON HAS RADIOS CHECKED FOR DEAD SHORTS AS A LOT OF PEOPLE HOOK THEM UP BACKWARDS AND THE FINALS BLOW BECAUSE THEY RUN THE RADIO TO AN ANTENNA WITH A DEAD SHORT OR VERY HIGH MATCH( SWR )
