If you cannot hear the “booms,” put on headphones because they are definitely there. They sound similar to someone hitting a low pitched bass drum for comparison. Fastball = no boom. Breaking balls = boom.

But I'm not going to get crazy upset like a lot of people (it is not that important to real life). And I don't think the Astros are the only team doing this. It also seems the only time the MLB matters is when someone is cheating tbh. Also the Astros made baseball enjoyable again, Like the steroid era. So from a business perspective it helped the MLB😂.

  • @theCoolcatrich

NiftyBox you are correct. The booms aren’t supposed to signify the exact pitch, but only to relay that the pitch was going to be some kind of off speed pitch. Hence no boom when fast ball being thrown. This is why it wasn’t a 100% effective. Some pitchers were just too nasty for them to hit even though they knew what was coming.

Reagan Mummau it’s a whole different mind game when you got the pitcher throwing 100 mph. Having to try to catch up to his 100 mph fastball and then trynna react to a curveball, all in a second, changes the game versus facing a pitcher throwing low-mid 90s. It’s a huge advantage knowing what pitch he’s gonna throw next. You don’t gotta guess if it’s a 100mph fastball or a curve

@Patrick J Mims Every team will steal signs if they can but when you bring in cameras and outside technology, that's when its cheating. Also it does have a big advantage to steal signs with cameras. There was a game where Kershaw pitched against the astros in the WS. Not one Astro, no one at all, even flinched at a curveball. Every curveball they either just watched it go low, or they swung at it if they saw it was going to be a strike. Kershaw chokes in the playoffs, but his 12-6 curveball is one of the best we've seen in the last 10 years. For not even one Astros player to even check swing, or flinch at one of his curveballs that would start in the middle and drop out of the strike zone is fishy. It is defintely a big help to know what pitch is coming before it actually comes.

The strikeout ratio is what was most compelling in the stats. 2014-2016 the astros were around 15th each year. 2017-2019, they mysteriously jumped to first or second each year. Then when you look at their strikout ratio compared to other teams, it’s blatantly obvious that they had inhumanly good numbers. They had an incomparably low strikeout ratio to any other team in the league, and they seemed to be consistently average in that regard prior to 2017. The strikout ratio of the entire team dropped from consistently being around 24% to consistently being around 18%. That is a huge drop.

For those who don’t understand the impact that stealing signs this way can have, especially when it’s obvious that the at bats didn’t always go their way, consider this single effect that the sign stealing does have: if nothing else, knowing which pitch is coming can help you make your at bat more competitive. That is, you’re better able to foul off close pitches and lay off breaking pitches. Even if you don’t get a hit, you at least push up the pitcher’s count. This can have a major effect on the way the game is played in later innings. I’d also be curious to see if it ever helped with baserunning, giving base runners a better idea as to what pitch is coming so they can alter their baserunning approach... but we can only speculate unless someone comes out and says something about it. So, while sign stealing might not have an obvious effect on the game, there is at least a butterfly effect that can create different situations that ultimately favor the team that’s cheating.
