Ireland was a bit surprising. As for Sweden, we used to be very Christian but we are also a very progressive country (we started with a form of universal healthcare during the 1600s) so I guess that religion took a back seat. However, a lot of us believe in something (fate, universe, nature), we just don't know what it is or means. It still counts as atheism but it's not the classic "I believe in nothing".

I should also add that in Europe many people may follow some religious element due to cultural significance, not belief in the devine. I know of atheists for example that got married in a church because it was a beautiul setting or baptised their children due to it being an important family gathering. Most people aren't anti-religion but just completely indifferent to religion outside of the cultural and historical context.

That’s the case here in Norway too. I was baptised in the Lutheran church as a baby and confirmed as a teenager because of family tradition reasons instead of religious reasons and that’s the norm here. We go to confirmations, weddings and funerals in the church and we celebrate Christmas etc. but we don’t go to the church regularly or follow any religious rules or practices. I was never raised in the church. My mom has never been very religious and has the mindset that she’s open to the possibility, but she doesn’t fully believe unless there’s proof. My dad used to be less religious than my mom but since he married my stepmom he’s gotten more religious, my stepmom is probably the most religious person I know and even she only attends church occasionally so that says a lot about how religion works over here. I am probably the least religious of my family as my siblings have gotten a bit more religious as they’ve grown older while I’ve gone the opposite direction and gotten more atheist as I’ve grown older. I will probably be the one family member to not keep the family tradition of baptizing my future children as babies because I believe my kids deserve the right and freedom to choose wether or not they want to partake in religion when they’re old enough to make that decision for themselves.

Atheism is the default setting of every human. Something *ALL* religions have in common is that they *MUST* be taught. No human is ever born knowing a religion. So people aren't "becoming" atheist, they're just resetting to default settings.

  • @UberSpah

I agree that it's default setting of every human, but I partially disagree that it must be taught. Back when humans were very simple and knew nothing, they were atheists, however, as they discovered world, they didn't have answers to all question they had, so they were simplifying them explaining them with divine powers. In modern world, however, people tend to explain things with science, but religion is still mainstream because it is taught by parents to children.

@@UberSpah It is as you say, that it has always been in human nature to be curious for answers. So in a time when knowledge was low, the most logical outcome for things we could not understand was to chalk it up to something divine. I think the case with Europe in general is, that people might claim to be Catholic, Protestant, or perhaps Orthodox for some cultural or traditional reasons, but the total majority in most countries isn’t actually religious. Most people don’t pray, don’t believe in any Biblical stories or mythical lore, and only go to church when its Christmas or Easter or there’s a wedding or a funeral and that sort of stuff. Churches are just usually used as pretty old cultural heritage places that tourists can visit and that can be used for nice concerts or eventually art exhibitions.

A little correction for the numbers in Israel- The number of atheists in Israel is 25% (including agnostics). I think the confusion comes from the cultural difference and language barrier since the 60% that was referred to in that video are secular people, not atheists. In Israel a person who considers themselves secular can still believe in god, practice their religion etc, but not be too strict about it. For example, I believe in god, keep kosher, celebrate the holidays, and fast on fasting days but I would still be considered secular. It's a bit of a weird concept for non Israelis but Israel is a pretty religious country as a whole.

Question, why do you consider yourself secular? Sure, you can believe in a Creator and still live your life on laws and subjective opinions of your own or somebody elses, but if something is from the Creator and it has empirical data backing it, why ignore it, that would be an objective source? In some religions that would be looked upon as hypocritical. Just curious, to me secular and religion doesn't go together, the definition of secular is basically not having a strong religious belief, so even if someone still believes that there is a God or something there whilst being secular, is that really a true believer and follower of a specific religion? Should that then count in these lists? I would call these "secular believers" more like cultural believers, you go to the holy buildings because of your culture and upbringing, you remember holidays and stories through culture and family, but because the religion isn't the main part of your life and something that you establish your world view on, I don't think that that person is religious.

These numbers seem to be very dubious. I've just done some calculation for the UK based on the 2011 Census (the data from the 2021 Census are not available yet). For under-25-year-olds, 47% ticked the "No Religion" box whereas for over-60-year-olds, only 24% ticked "No Religion". I would expect the 2021 numbers to be higher but nowhere near 75%. I think the problem is that many people self-report as Christian but don't actually go to church or believe in any of the tenets. The source of the data in the video is probably based on an inference that somebody who doesn't go to church is not a Christian, but I'm not sure that that is a fair inference or that it has been applied consistently across the different countries. Most people in Japan say they are not religious at all but they still go to the neighbourhood temple at least once a year, bow their heads in reverence to the god(s), make a donation to the monks etc.

🌹 Religion as exposed by the Real Illuminati 🔘 No religion has ever been able to establish peace and harmony on Earth. Religion has an excuse as to why it has never accomplished this. Each places the blame on those outside of their particular religion: Gentiles, infidels, sinners, and those whom they consider lost or who refuse to join them. Their excuse is that, if everyone would just join their religion, the world would be saved. 🔘 Three of the world's main religions: Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, claim that no matter how hard each tries, none will ever be successful at creating peace and harmony on Earth until their particular Messiah comes to Earth (or returns to Earth) with the power and authority to create heaven throughout the world. None of these religions believe that mortals can do it on their own. Ironically, these three religions, more than any of the others, have been the main cause of most of the carnage and death throughout modern history. Consider for a moment what would happen to these three religions if humankind actually solved all of its own problems without the help of a Messiah. Or perhaps, maybe, there wouldn't be any problems if these three religions didn't exist. If we were to solve our own problems, not only would these three religions not be needed, but their identity and worth would be greatly diminished, as well as the self-esteem, self-worth, and self-value that their members gain from belonging to them.🌿 🔘 Unfortunately, most people fall under the spell of these false messengers, who don't have any better understanding of the Real Truth than the seeker who pays them for an understanding. The false messengers pay comes in a wide variety of forms. Most receive actual money or other relevant material goods for their services. But ALL receive a payment that is more enticing than all the money in the world: power over another person, respect and standing, and accolade-laced value from their followers.🌿 🔘 The Roman and American governments were not and are not successful at controlling their people through military power. Instead, they were and are able to control their people by another power that is stronger than any physical power on Earth: BELIEF.🌿 🔘 The most successful book in the world is the Bible. It was created by the few to control the rest. It is a fantasy that has been presented by the few as "fact" in order to provoke certain behaviors from the majority. It actually details a list that God checks twice in order to find out who's naughty or nice. If God checks His list and finds out you're nice, you're going to be saved and go to heaven. If you're naughty, you're going to hell lat least according to the stories of the Bible).🌿 🔘 When your mortal life ends, no matter how it ends, you will immediately be aware that you continue to exist. You will recognize that your True Self is an advanced human of incredible intelligence and individual power (free will). You will then know that YOU are the only god that has ever existed in your experience. You will realize that all the times upon Earth when you felt the presence of "God" or your "conscience," you were actually feeling the connection that your mortal avatar had with your True Self. You will know these Real Truths about your own Self, but also about every other human with whom you shared your earthly experience. You will know that each person who lives on Earth is actually connected to their True Self. You will know that there is no other god outside of YOU, outside of EACH of US. At that time, you will recognize exactly what has corrupted the mortal experience and destroved humanity. You will understand that, unless confronted and eliminated, this culprit (this CAUSE of the problem), will destroy our Fortnite-end our lives upon Earth. This culprit is religion. Religion lies to us and tells us that we are not our own god, but are subjected to (or enslaved by) the god that religion has invented to control our actions. Religion teaches us to not depend on ourselves for our own salvation. Religion teaches us that we must depend upon "God," even if this god allows us to experience such a miserable mortal life. We are taught about this God by religious leaders who personally benefit from the lie. If we were convinced that there is no god other than US, outside of the "god within," then we could unite and do what we must do in order to save Earth and all of humanity. Thus convinced, religion would no longer exist, and those who promoted religion for their own gain might cry out, "Oh mountains and rocks, fall on us, and hide us from this Real Truth!"🌿

There will be an Epochal eclipse a CROSS the US on April 8th 2024, when more shall be revealed to those with "eyes and ears." The rest will see only an eclipse. Matthew 16: 4 Jonah 3: 4-5, 8 Jonah 4: 11. Final judgement for the devil and dragon is 10/12/26. Daniel 7: 9-14. Don't expect to "SEE" anything. Men and women never "SEE" anything, except for an elect few. It has always been this way. Over 93% of men and women are nearly deaf and blind spiritually. That's NORMAL. It has always been this way. Great Re-Set on 09/23/26. All the people will CRY OUT, "No more war. Forgive our debts. Save us from OMEGA (the killer variant). We will do Anything!" That's when we unveil our NEON GAUD. In GAUD we Trust -- men and women are liars, cheats, thieves, and murderers. How can we be trusted to govern ourselves. And so ends our 250-year experiment in SELF government. EPIC FAIL. Are secret societies on your radar? All is being revealed right now.

I'm not sure how accurate this is, but in Norway, we where told in school that the majority of the early settlers of Iceland was driven there because they didn't want to become christians when King Olav, later St. Olav used brute force to replace norse religion with christianity in mainland Norway. The became "fredløse" in Norway, and had to go somewhere else to be a member of society. Sweden was already dealing with similar issues, so going to Iceland was a viable option. So... I guess it's not very weird that they have a high amount of non-christians for a nordic country.

My theory is that it's about the Maori population and the original influence of missionaries. For example, Hawaii is a religious state due to missionaries. We have no lottery and have been slow to legalize weed ... even tho infamous for Maui Wowie and weed grown in Hawaii it netted vastly more than the sugarcane. The Hawaiian and Polynesian people tend to be very Christian ... even when those looney missionaries banned their language and dance. Anyway, the Maori people suffered the same fate culturally at the hands of the missionaries but compliance with Christianity remains strong. The Maori people comprise 17% of the NZ population. Aboriginal people are only 3.3% of Australia. The Hawaiians are 10% of Hawaii, but it is also diverse with Shinto, Buddhism and then any woo woo wack-a-mo Guru who comes to town.

In Japan most people will visit shrines and temples and even leave donations and say short prayers. If you ask why they do it the usual answer is "tradition" and "culture", but you won't hear the words "belief" and "religion". In other words, what they do and what they believe are two separate things, and the people otherwise live completely secular lives. However, the number of atheists in Japan is exaggerated. I've seen polls stating 70% to 85% atheism in Japan, but even though the majority don't believe in a god or gods, a substantial portion of the population do believe in spirits and other supernatural phenomena, and therefore do not qualify as fully atheistic.

Not every country was dictatorial or theocratic, even before the 1600's. 2. It is entirely context dependent on which country. Are we talking Britain (Newton) or Italy (Galileo)? Newton, Einstein, Schroedinger, Pascal, Galileo, Bacon, etc all WILLINGLY believed in God because they could recognize patterns and symmetries that could very well be creations from a divine powerful being. I think dismissal of the possible existence of a God is incredibly idiotic and retarded, as well as, quite funnily enough, goes against the scientific method of conclusion, which is something that has not been proven, can remain true, even if unproven, and something that is proven, can be subject to change.

I live in Brazil and I'm an atheist for as long as I remember because, though I was raised as catholic, the whole religion thing never really got a hold on me. Funny thing is, for a time, in my twenties (I'm 54 now), I really tried to believe in something and I decided to study the subject. Paradoxically, that's what made me a full-fledged atheist so to speak because I discovered so many absurds and inconsistencies that the whole thing started to make even less sense. As a massively Christian country, religion is huge here and though my opinion is mainly respected, I get a few weird looks from time to time and people questioning me in some absurd ways like "how can you have morals without a religion?". In any case, I tend not to discuss religion.

Needless to say, a lot of people used to lie about Bible, you need an actual dude who can make actual sense of what even God is, or isn't. Well schools get more money by keeping students in the classroom; students are not taught to think for themselves, they are just spoon-fed from books that don't tell all of the truth in history. If a person is intelligent they find books that tell the whole truth! My family can exist without knowing things or questioning things. High schools don't teach Henry David Thoreau's essay on Being A Conscientious Objector because America needs people to sign up for the military and the authorities don't want anyone asking questions . . .of course I could go on but it would take forever to describe the level of stupidity students leave school in America. And not to mention the breakdown in America due to the opioid epidemic that was lovingly initiated by the Obama administration so insurance companies would pay for the Sackler pharma to collect huge sums of money from prescription opioids. Our country was handing that stuff out like candy at Christmas! Stupid stupid stupid!

@@Ritesh-pv4yi not really, I understand that you want to define it as a homogeneous identity because you might feel it closer to other theistic religions than not (which parts of it surely is) but as long as you use the word Hinduism that would be incorrect, there’s no such thing as Hinduism - the term is a foreign exonym which refers to all traditions that existed in the subcontinent in pre medieval times and some later on - the reason for this probably being the commonality of basic beliefs, similar debating traditions, absence of blasphemous persecution and otherisation etc that would be expected had these sects actually been considered so different by the people, scholars differentiate Jainism Buddhism etc from this because they wanted to talk about their heritage separately and they should because they do have a very large separate heritage, I wasn’t referring to them here anyway. The people who don’t believe in gods or believe in them in a separate sense (as enlightened people, as yantras only, etc) are not wrong in identifying themselves as Hindu because that’s what they are culturally, Charvakas would be defined as Hindus if they were met by foreign travellers in the past. And nastik Hindus are those that do not completely accept the Vedas (but may accept brahma, or other concepts) that’s the whole point of Vedanta (it’s literally Veda + anta) and many other traditions.

And buddhism has hells ( from wikipedia - " The Dīrghāgama or Longer Āgama-sūtra (Ch. cháng āhán jīng 長阿含經),[9] was translated to Chinese in 22 fascicles from an Indic original by Buddhayaśas (Fotuoyeshe 佛陀耶舍) and Zhu Fonian 竺佛念 in 412-13 CE.[10] This literature contains 30 discrete scriptures in four groups (vargas). The fourth varga, which pertains to Buddhist cosmology,[11] contains a "Chapter on Hell" (dìyù pǐn 地獄品) within the Scripture of the Account of the World (shìjì jīng 世記經). In this text, the Buddha describes to the sangha each of the hells in great detail, beginning with their physical location and names ") gods ( "A Deva (देव Sanskrit and Pāli, Mongolian tenger (тэнгэр)) in Buddhism is a type of celestial beings or gods who share the god-like characteristics of being more powerful, longer-lived, and, in general, much happier than humans, although the same level of veneration is not paid to them as to Buddhas.") and also afterlife (" In each rebirth one is born and dies, to be reborn elsewhere in accordance with one's own karma.[19] It is perpetuated by one's avidya ("ignorance"), particularly about anicca (“impermanence”) and anatta, (“no-self”)[20][21] and from craving.[note 5] Samsara continues until moksha is attained by means of insight and nirvana.[") just like there is in hinduism, this is why they are all considered dharmic religions. Yoga also does not have personal gods and is demonstrably hindu, has always been, so you cannot claim hinduism always necessarily has multiple gods. Hinduism is not a strictly defined religion, vedism or brahmanism may be but hinduism is a cultural term - a foreigner in premedieval times visiting India would call _all_ Indians hindus. I don't know how they define sanatan dharma but it is not the same as hinduism. And about the brahmins, how is it a lie if they do accept such sects? Doesn't the acceptance make that a truth?

I think at least in the case of East Asian countries, there's some confusion over what's "religious." For example, can Shintoism be regarded as a religion? Some people categorize it as a "belief system" because it contains more than one God. As a Chinese, I can tell that most people are not "strictly religious" but definitely not 100% atheist. For instance, most elders go to buddhist and taoist temples praying for good fortune for the family. Young people can also visit temple praying for their study/work/etc. Can those practices be counted as religious? So, I think if focusing on the major religions, Japan and China can top the list, but if we take those local practices (some may regard them as religious while others not), the results may be more complicated.

Buddha himself got deified by many branches of Buddhism, even though everyone is technically able to become a Buddha. So it depends on how you define atheism. Is a Buddha a deity?
