24 Hours with an Ex-Royal Marine Commando: Bushcraft Skills and Tips

Ойын-сауық

I spend 24 hours camping with former Royal Marine Nick Goldsmith. Nick teaches some Bushcraft Skills and Survival Tips that he has tried and tested out in the field. We spend the night in a bivvy bag on the forest floor and Nick gives us a tour of his bushcraft camp and off grid cabin.

Very happy to see the whittling part. My grandad learnt to whittle on quiet nights during his time in the forces. Started with spoons. Many years later in his retirement he had gotten so good that people would beg him to make things. He never took any money because he loved doing it. His favorite thing to make was smoking pipes.

I've made a spoon on a whim next to a campfire by burning out the bowl with a small ember of charcoal, blowing on it and causing the wood to char in a very localized area, then clearing it out with some sand and water as a paste, and then scraping the mess off with the tip of my daily carry SOG folder - while at an abandoned old Soviet airfield in Latvia, running a 100+ person LARP event with no facilities of any kind (the outhouse didn't even have a seat, until I made one out of some scrap lumber lying around). You can do a lot more with a lot less, if you put your mind to it. I used the spoon to eat the local Army Veterans Association's field kitchen foods for the entire event. It's still knocking about somewhere.

Thanks for making this one, Mike. Great to see Nick again and to catch up with what he’s up to. Good news to hear that he might be present on the tubes again - the previous channel rapidly became an essential part of the corpus, in my view, delivering (along with the likes of yourself, and notable others) practical, realistic outdoor skills in an entertaining and calming way. And then much missed, although I recognise of course that every content maker has their own life to live, first and foremost. Good on all of you.

{{3}} Great find! I just came across the new crowdfunding project for freebeat's Morph 2-in-1 e-Bike. It's a game-changer in the e-bike industry with its outstanding features. One of the most impressive things is the indoor mode where you can recharge the bike while using it indoors. The brushless 750W motor, 80Nm torque, and top speed of 20mph make it a powerful ride. Plus, the 80mm front suspension, puncture-resistant fat tires, and IPX5 Waterproof finish ensure a smooth and reliable journey in any weather condition. And don't forget about the Smart Saddle Detection+ and the unique ability to convert your indoor fitness efforts into CO2-free miles for outdoor rides. What a brilliant way to combine fitness, technology, and sustainability!

Great to see him thriving in an environment that he enjoys and can pass on quality info to people that as we noted could save someone's life one day. The cabin was a winner, families must love that and we know several veterans that have put their families through challenging times on their journey to a better place, so huge respect for the Woodland Warroir work! Man!! This was SUCH a great video!! I’ve practicing survival skills, some Bushcraft, and wild camping in my backyard for the past year. Finally, just took the next step before real a trip wild camping… tarp tenting in a local state campground with no running water (except for trout streams 😁😁), no electricity, no cell service, no Internet. The only convenience available were compost toilets. Three nights out with barely anybody in the campground… and very densely forested. Sitting home today, recuperating, taking care of a couple small flesh wounds from the trip 🙄… this video popped up on my feed (I am a sub). This was the best 54 minutes and 46 seconds I have spent in a long time. Really really really great video. Thank you guys! I have seen some of Nick’s stuff in the past, but now I’m heading over and going to sub. I’m also going to order that book. That will be my reading for my next trips… even if I DO have cell service! Love this. By the way - State side 😁. So the message is getting across the pond too! Thanks! Thanks! Thanks!

What a great collaboration between two bastions of British bushcraft. Ive missed you Nick and have subscribed to your new channel. Im looking forward to all the new content. There were some golden nuggets of info in this video, which goes to show you never stop learning. As an NHS Paramedic, I'm fully on board with not just carrying major trauma kit but having it ready to deploy instantly. Tearing one of those foil packets open with blood-soaked hands is no easy task. Food for thought. I thoroughly enjoyed watching this and hope you guys team up again. Thank you.
