233. Germans Behaving Badly

Why is modern society so self-obsessed?
The answer may be found in a group of late 18th century German rebels, including the writer Goethe and playwright Friedrich Schiller. Andrea Wulf joins Dominic and Tom in today's episode to discuss the rebels' progressive (and often scandalous) lives and her new book, 'Magnificent Rebels: The First Romantics and the Invention of the Self'.

I enjoyed most of this, but I really wish she would drop the contemporary politics. I bought the book about halfway through...

Why shouldn't she? It was a really effective way of presenting how the ideas of the philosophers relate to us in our current zeitgeist.

Very knock about and relevant to modern times although Frau Wulf could include a longer list of modern malcontents , although possibly she doesn't view other so called current "progressives " actors as enemies of democracy . This episode was great fun and informative . It's all part of the Weimar literary & philosophical heritage and the foundation of how most liberals think about themselves and their perception of the world.

I'll narrow in my depth of knowledge of vampires, and assume that as created in literature, they don't choose their limited class of efficious sustenance or issues with sunlight.

Not bad until the last minute or two. If censorship is being caled for what does "our democracy" mean?
