23 December 1978 BBC2 - Saturday Menu & Christmas Nutcracker intro
Ойын-сауық
BBC2's Christmas ident for 1978 gave us a preview of the new "2" which would become standard in 1979. Here it is, following a menu for the evening's action on Saturday 23 December.

BBC2 had only just come back on air after the infamous strike of late 1978. The opening announcement by Peter Brook was filmed for the news. The BBC2 theme music, which was commonly thoughto have been created for the 1979 revamp of the ident is heard introducing this (decidedly tasteful) Christmas ident. (You should see what BBC1 had in place for Xmas 78!)
So many lovely memories.....
My first Christmas. Great to see this.
I was born not long before this in November. Interesting to see what my parents probably watched. Who would have been younger than I am now typing this :(
Great work recovering this rare piece of footage, on the day of it's 40th anniversary.
This is a brilliant find. Thank you for uploading this.

This trumpeters ident was missing for a long time up till now
You've just brought back some memories I had as a kid. Loved Mike Harding & we had a brilliant next door neighbour who liked the Fivepenny Piece, great days.
Thanks for posting. On this day, my family had our eating out get-together at a nearby restaurant/steakhouse.
i would have deffinetly switched over onto BBC 1 for wonder woman !!!

Me too.
1:33 Honestly when I first saw this I thought each trumpeteer has 1 leg. And I can see the setup which spins them around. Surprised there weren't any jams!
I'm glad it's finally found....
That "Nutcracker" puppet character looked good.
WONDERFUL!👏👏👏👏
I don't remember Doug Henning specials being on BBC. They were always on ITV when I was younger. That particular special is still one of my favourites.
The screening of The Sound Of Music was the first showing on British Television.

Fun fact: the BBC would also have been the first really prominent television network in the world to show the whole of “The Sound of Music” uncut for the following reason: it clocks in at nearly three hours, and when it was shown for the first time on television in the commercial-centric US nearly three years before, they had to heavily edit the movie to fit a three-hour slot (tons of dialogue was cut out here and there, particularly dialogue leading into some of the musical numbers) and so, 2 hours and 20 minutes of the movie made it into that slot, allowing commercials to fill up the other 40 minutes or so of it.
I knew I should've asked you for missing Idents first. Now if you have the 1976 one from BBC1 or BBC2 (which isn't telerecorded), that would be awesome. Well done for recovering the clip of the rare 1978 Ident unseen for 40 years.

We have the 1976 BBC2 ident but haven't come across the BBC1 one yet. Plenty of tapes still to check though!

No.
I love the ident but schedule is too music dominated all in the space of one evening.
