221007 Lucky Gallon Corsair Build and Flights

Build and flight video of a Herr Engineering Corsair Kit for rubber-powered free flight. Kit is modified and covered to represent Cook Cleland's "Lucky Gallon" FG-1D Corsair, raced to a 6th place finish in the 1946 Thompson Trophy race. Flights include some beautiful sunset rides at the AMA's Muncie IN flying site during the 2022 Flying Aces Club Outdoor Champs and Ted Dock meets. Includes footage taken by Tom Hallman (maxfliart on KZread) and Wally Farrell.

    I build and fly RC models better because I learned to build and fly free flight. Excellent job, Mike.

    Thanks Dave. Lots to learn when you can't just put in a few clicks of trim. 7 years since I got back into free flight and I'm still learning...

    Aeromodeling at the highest level, in my view.. I just KNEW that Tom was going to be in this somewhere, as soon as I saw that characteristic profile pilot, I'm a fan of his Max fliart channel. A lovely plane this, beautifully built and flown. 🌟👍

    That looks so good. Mine goes up like that, but starts winding in on the right-hand glide. Bravo, Michael!

    Thanks Duke - so far it hasn't shown any really nasty habits. We'll see how it does when the air isn't as calm as it was in Muncie.

    Yep, right up until I forgot to put on the peg retainer after switching motors. I think you saw that abbreviated flight. Bent prop shaft and stab have been replaced - it's ready to go for WestFAC.

    Its been about 60 years since I flew a rubber powered model, amazing flight, beautiful model. How on earth do you get the rubber power to last such a long time?

  • @michaelkelly7338

    @michaelkelly7338

    Жыл бұрын

    Thanks Geoffrey - the Corsair has a pretty long motor in it (30g, 4x~44" loops of 1/8" rubber). Wound to around 1800 turns it will give a motor run of 45-55 seconds turning a 9.5" prop.

    @@michaelkelly7338 No, what I meant was, what format are the skin files? I could not find any that PhotoShop could open. Where are the skins you found located since the ones I found couldn't be opened?

  • @michaelkelly7338

    @michaelkelly7338

    Жыл бұрын

    @@tvideo1189 Ahhh. Open the skin files in either GIMP or Paint.Net and export them as BMP, TIFF or JPG files. For some skins I have had to add a black background layer in GIMP to get rid of transparency effects. For the Lucky Gallon Corsair I downloaded the skin from here: flightsim.to/file/24820/fg-1d-corsair-lucky-gallon. Unzip, drill down through the folders until you get to the TEXTURE.RL_Lucky folder. You'll see a series of .PNG files in the folder - open those with Paint.Net and save as BMP or JPG.

    Thanks Scott. My son's Corsair is from the Dumas 17.5" span kit. Dihedral is a bit increased, the fin was reduced to scale size and it uses a narrowed 7" Peck prop instead of the kit prop. It flies surprisingly well for how heavy it is - his best flight so far is just under a minute.
