One of the best games from the 1986 world cup. Burtagueno and Culemans were 2 brilliant players. This will always be the best world cup in history as far as I am concerned!

Juegazo. Después del histórico Brasil-Francia en Guadalajara, para mi éste fue el mejor encuentro del Mundial del '86. España tenía el mejor mediocampo de ese Mundial. Lastimosamente no tenía un delantero centro competente(Julio Salinas), y su portero no tenía manos.

Aquella selección era muy buena. Pero faltaban algunas piezas, como Gordillo en el extremo izquierdo, que no fue al mundial por lesión. También, en ese partido, faltaban los dos centrales titulares de la selección, que eran Maceda y Goicoechea. Maceda lesionado durante el mundial y Goico no jugó ese partido por acumulación de tarjetas... Se tuvo que improvisar con Gallego y Chendo y se notaba porque eran más vulnerables. El seleccionador quizá debió llevar algún central más. Del resto, eran lo mejor que había.

@@albertr972 Iba a ir Manolo Sanchis, joven, físicamente en gran momento y campeón de liga y UEFA (actual Europa League) con el Real Madrid, pero se rompió en las semifinales de esta competición...lástima porque en aquellos momentos era uno de los mejores defensas europeos, pero el seleccionador Miguel Muñoz debió haber llevado algún otro central más al mundial, Migueli del Barcelona, por ejemplo, veterano pero aún a gran nivel y líder defensivo en el Barcelona de Terry Venables

Ambos venían de eliminar en octavos a las dos selecciones que eran sensación en fase de grupos Bélgica a union soviética y España a Dinamarca que eran físicamente unas máquinas sobretodo los Daneses que ganaron todos sus partidos incluyendo a la subcampeona de ese mundial Alemania pero España los eliminó con una contundente goleada de 5 a 1 y Bélgica elimina a Rusia espere mas de estas selecciones pero estaba y apareció Maradona y por eso Argentina fue el legítimo Campeón

@@jorgegamarrarivera6411 Dinamarca tenía un gran equipo. España les había eliminado en semis de la euro del 84, otro gran encuentro, De todas maneras, España pagó un precio muy alto por ese 5-1. Goico vio la segunda amarilla que le impidó jugar contra Bélgica, y España se quedó sin centrales.

Before their win in 2010, Spain went to the quarter finals 3 times, 1986 (lost on pens to Belgium), 1994 (lost 2-1 to Italy) and 2002 (lost on pens to South Korea). This team was good enough to beat Belgium and were unlucky not to advance to the semifinals, but I'm not sure they could have overcome Maradona's Argentina.

In the eighties spain had "la quinta del Buitre" top football players as Butragueño,Michel,Sanchis,Martin Vazquez I think that this team was superior than 1994 and 2002.

Great Match. Belgium got a great team and the best goalkeeper. And Spain also, bad luck what always is necessary to win a world cup. Spain got 3 of the best central defenders of the world and any of them could play that match. Sanchis broken his leg just before the world cup, Maceda injured the first match against Brazil and has to leave football after that and Goicoetxea was booked with a second yellow against Denmark in second round.

I don't understand why Zubizarreta always tried to guess. All powerful kicks usually go through the centre. Just stay in the centre and you'd had saved at least one of them.

It was a great game. But the Spanish press underestimated Belgium, and Spain has very bad luck with the central defenders. Any of the two the play in that positions, were central defenders.

This was the last of the quarter-finals to be played and yet another late night game in Europe because of the time difference,kicking off at 11 pm in Britain. It followed Argentina's 2-1 triumph over England earlier that day with the most infamous Maradona goal followed by the most famous one. Most people had expected this quarter-final to be the USSR v Denmark before the second round (last 16)'s two big surprises. Spain and Belgium kept us guessing all the way as they put on an engrossing spectacle instead. We Europeans needed to get the matchsticks out to prop the eyelids up to keep up with all these exciting matches,especially if work loomed the following day,but it was well worth it.

11:04 Zubizarreta won't save a penalty kick. Even the commentator says that he is surrendering.

Zubi never has, that' s wby Spain never got beyond the quarterfinals before Casillas came into the scene. Zubizarreta was the most overrated goalkeeper in Spain for over a decade. He could only safe low shots. Hopeless keeper, abit like De Gea nowadays.

Belgium had a slow start in this tournament by losing against the host Mexico 2-1, drawing 2-2 against Paraguay, and beating Iraq 2-1. But this quality team got stronger by beating the USSR 4-3 in a memorable football match in the second round, and then beat a good and an offensive Spanish team in this great match. Only the magic of Diego Maradona in the next game of the semi final put an end to the dreams of this Belgium team from reaching the final.

@@andresandresin Sí, y no al nivel que mostraba en la liga. Era un buen portero, pero no salvaba lo imposible, que muchas veces, esas paradas, son las que dan títulos. Pero a decir verdad, desde la retirada de Arkonada, tampoco había muchos que le hicieran sombra. Tal vez Ablanedo, y no dejaba de ser un buen portero.

The audio quality of the commentary is of note. If you compare to 4 years previous in the 1982 World Cup it was like listening to commentary through a crackled international phone line. By 1986 this was a huge advance.

@@TheKiomaru creo que el comentario se refiere a la tanda de penaltis. Yo viendo el partido en directo siempre pensé que M. Muñoz hubiera tenido que cambiarlo por Urruti o incluso Buyo. Lo mismo que hizo van Gaal contra Costa Rica en el mundial de 2014.

You create your own luck. They were actually shooting at Zubizarreta. Pfaff saved one, Zubizarreta was in a corner before they even kicked the penalty. He cost Spain the victory. Nothing do do with luck. All to do with a keeper that wasn’t good at stopping penalty kicks

@@juanjoseCF no existe el portero perfecto. No he visto ninguno. Es verdad, solía hacer rechaces más de lo habitual pero también blocaba balones. El problema es el mismo; cuando la accion de un portero cuesta un gol, se magnifican sus “defectos”.

Y en que España no pudo contar con ninguno de sus 3 centrales. Gallego era medio campista y Chendo y Camacho, que se intercambairon la posición eran laterales. Solo tienes que ver el gol de Bélgica (Ojo que tenían un grandísmo equipo) Chedo despeja como lo hacen los laterales y Gallego sali a cubrir el hueco, no al hombre, además de que Zubi no sale a por la bola ( era muy buen portero pero con la selección nunca estuvo al nivel) Con Goico, Ceulemans no huiese rematado tan fácil. Y ocn una defensa con Goico y Maceda o Sanchís, no habrían llegado tan fácilmente. De todas maneras, un gran partido y hay que quitarse el sombrero que jugarte unos cuartos de mundial en una posición que no es la tuya, hay que echarle muchas narices.

@@1greenMitsi They were a great team. One of the best we've ever had. The main issue is that Spain had to play with Gallego (midfielder) and Chendo (right wing) in the central positions. If Goico, Maceda and Sanchis would be able to play that match, probably the history would be different.

The first Golden Generation of Belgian football,before the one of the last decade+? Belgium never got beyond the first group stage at a World Cup before 1982,when they shocked holders Argentina 1-0 in the opening match (a feat repeated by Cameroon in 1990) and used that as a foundation to build on. With the world class talent of Scifo added the 1986 team had more inspiration to go with the mix of perspiration and skill of preceding efforts in 1982 and at the 1984 European Championship.

Es increible q este portero pudiera jugar de titulsr en la selección y con varios entrenadores..en todos los mundiales o euros q jugó siempre armó alguna..y en los penalties lamentable ...se queda en el medio y se deja caer para el otro lado..Buyo hubiera sacado alguno ..en fin..el portero mas sobrevalorado de la historia

Quienes eran sus suplentes en éste magnífico mundial? Y ustedes cómo conocedores de la época, quiénes eran los tres mejores porteros españoles, Andoni tenía cosas buenas pero siempre cometía algún pecado mortal, recuerdo varios en su selección.

España tenía un gran equipo en ese mundial, era más que Bélgica, pero Zubisarreta no atajaba penales....una pena.

No era más q Bélgica. El partido hubiera estado liquidado de no ser x el árbitro cuando sanciona un foul inexistente de Ceulemans. Era el 2-0, y el final del partido

at last! Someone spoted that! People act like the ''new'' Belgium is something special and (even worst) the one and only ''golden era'' of Belgium national team.You cant imagine how many times I argue about that when talking with younger fans .Scifo and the later (after Pfaff) goalkeeper michel preud 'homme were idols for me ,strange if you think i am from Greece

🤣 Whatever tickles one's fancy,I suppose. Goes along with cricket commentating legend Brian Johnston's famous accidentally innuendo-laden utterances.

Zubizareta fue muy malo en la tanda de penaltis, parecía incredible qué en 1986 fue el portero mejor pagado del mundo y fue fechado por el FC Barcelona después del mundial de México en 1986.

Este partido le cabe bien la frase ''mató al tigre y le tuvo miedo al cuero'', España estuvo inspirada contra el EQUIPAZO de DINAMARCA, sobre todo con cuatro goles del ''Buitre'' Emilio Butragueño, que en este partido contra Bélgica no recuerdo si jugó, pero no hizo ni un gol, de todas formas jaja, por eso el fútbol es raro, DINAMARCA sé muy bien que contra estos belgas pasaban a la otra fase para ver que partidazo contra la Argentina de Maradona, y sé que a donde DINAMARCA LLEGARA A LA FINALISIMA CONTRA ALEMANIA, sin duda DINAMARCA CAMPEÓN MUNDIAL EN MÉXICO 86. Injusto?? España ganó un partido totalmente impensado vs Dinamarca donde estaba totalmente dominado y gracias a un error garrafal del defensa llegó el empate. Ese partido termino 5 a 1 pero ni de casualidad condise con lo que pasó en el campo. Belgica también tuvo lo suyo con USSR, dado que ese partido fue dominado por los sovieticos y aún así logró 4 goles (2 en fuera de juego). Además, su performance fue muy inferior a lo llevado a cabo por la USSR, las cosas como son. Solo falta ver los partidos de ambas selecciones para comprender realmente su nivel, España llegó muy lejos jugando realmente un fútbol aburrido y sin brillo. Bélgica fue algo más parejo pero tampoco fue la gran cosa. Claro, todo esto en un mundial importa muy poco y no gana el que juega mejor, si no el que logra el resultado. Pero, hablar de injusticia es otra cosa muy distinta, eso ya va más al terreno de el merecimiento en base al despliegue futbolistico y ahí España se quedó super corto en todo.

Tuvo una oportunidad Gerets creo que fué y porque nos faltaban Goico , Maceda y Gordillo por lesión ( es decir todo da la defensa , la mejor de aquél Mundial ) o de lo contrario no hubiera siquiera metido ése gol . Así y todo fuimos muy superiores . La suerte belga fueron los penaltis que buscaron como locos porque sabían que era imposible ganar a España en el terreno de juego . Para mí fué la campeona moral de aquél Mundial . O al menos finalista . Todos tenían enfrentar a la Roja . O no te acuerdas ?? Creo que ni siquiera viste aquél Mundial por las tonterías que escribes

No-one expected them to defeat the USSR team that steamrollered its way through its group (bar drawing 1-1 with France),but what an epic thriller of a match they served up and what a surprise they pulled off to earn themselves this quarter-final meeting with Denmark's surprise conquerors Spain.

Gran partido. Pero la prensa española infravoló a Belgica, y sobre todo, España tuvo muy mala suerte en ese mundial Tenía 3 de los mejores 10-15 centrales del mundo y ninguno pudo jugar ese partido. Sanchis se lesionó en la penúltima jornada de liga, Maceda, junto a Gordillo, en el primer partido del mundial y Andoni Goichoetxea estaba sancionado por tarjetas.

sí, porque vaya cuadro las defensas de ambos equipos, ni existían. Pero es que con Dinamarca casi igual, unos errores enormes. Argentina ganó por Maradona, pero también porque defensivamente eran los más serios. Eran los únicos que no cometían errores tan grandes.

​ @Joven Son Los más serios atrás eran los alemanes, y fue una de las razones por las que se metieron en la final. Y sí, España, de la defensa titular, solo jugó con Camacho en ese partido.

Hola, estoy de acuerdo contigo pero Sanchís no lo veo como una baja, No estuvo en ningún partido de clasificación, No se yo si hubiese ido. Liceranzu si estuvo en clasificación tenía experiencia y repartía, pudimos echar en falta a Carrasco creo que debió jugar más, también Rincón en esos minutos finales, pero yo hubiese llevado a Santillana, en el caso de la portería (debió estar Arkonada), no se que paso, pero estoy convencido de con Urruti o Ablanedo también pasabamos incluso con Buyo, por último no entiendo la ausencia de Gerardo

@@marcosgimenez8225 Hola Marcos. Sanchís no estuvo en ninguno de los partidos de cualificación, porque hasta ese instante su posición, solía estar en el medio campo. Fue a partir de la llegada de Molowgni al Madrid cuando le retrasó a central e hizo una campaña tremenda. De hecho, Muñoz le había incluído en la lista, y cuando se rompió l atibia, llegó a decir que ra una baja muy sensible. Respecto a lo de Liceranzu, te doy la razón. Era mucho mejor que Mino, que fue el sustituto y ni llegó a debutar porque no tenía el nivel. Respecto a la portería... Pues no sé, Zubi era muy buen portero, pero sobretodo, regular. Para una liga está muy bien, aunque en este tipo de competiciones necestias alguien que saque cosas muy puntuales, ya que los partidos se suelen definir por pequeños detalles. También adelante te doy la razón, faltó un delantero de raza. Carrasco era muy bueno, aunque necesitaba un delantero rematador a su lado y Salinas no lo era. Una vez oí que Muñoz recibió bastantes presiones de la Federación en cuanto a ciertos jugadores. A Arkonada y Juanito, los cortaron la cabeza inmediatamente. Pero al parecer, había otros señalados después de la Eurocopa. De todas maneras, era otro fútbol, y a excepción del periodo 2008-12, creo que ha sido la mejor selección que ha habido.

@@angelmateos4287 de acuerdo estoy, pero era un mundial para haber estado en Semis y más después del partido ante Dinamarca. Lo de Mino una calamidad, no sé si estaban buscando otro Maceda, creo que Tendillo llegó al año siguiente. Lo de Zubizarreta estoy contigo pero es que creo que los había mejores y con Urruti (QED) o Ablanedo o hasta el mismo Buyo hubiésemos pasado en Los penales con Bélgica. Si Buyo estuvo en el 12-1 a Malta, era por qué era el Recambio de Arconada porque luego le dio la portería a Zubizarreta no entiendo, un saludo.

I lost a finale 3-2 on PK shootouts : every players kicked in the center. Now I always careful and only lost 4 PK shootout in my 24 years career. I found it unfair but it's valid so I take big joy stopping PK on center. I'm Belgian and I say what they did in Russia deserved the world title! (people laughed in 2008 when someone said Belgium would be a wc contender within the following 10 years

Lo de Zubizarreta en los penaltis era de llorar el solo se los metía . Siempre el lanzador sabía dónde tenía que tirarlo por qué el un poco antes se vencía para un lado y el que tiraba el penalti ya sabía dónde tirarlo no paro ni el penalti mal tirado que fue al medio . Pero la culpa el entrenador por qué sabía lo sabía toda España que zubi no paraba un penalti ni lo más fáciles no tenía sangre en las venas tenía que haber sacado un poco antes de terminar la prologa a portero reserva

España lanza cuatro penaltis excelentes y uno lamentable que, por supuesto falla. Bélgica lanza tres bastante bien y dos por el centro de la portería y marca los cinco. Por cierto, ¿ qué pita el árbitro en esa jugada de la segunda parte cuando resbala Camacho y Ceulemans y otro belga se quedaban solos? No siempre fueron robos escandalosos, pero se recuerda lo que interesa. La memoria es selectiva.
