And the great things about Sophia's character was that, while the other three girls were intentionally taking jabs at each other and knew when to let things drop, Sophia didn't have the same filter. Sophia is in the early stages of dementia, and she no longer has any filter whatsoever; every thought that she has comes right out of her mouth. That is how the character is written. As a result, every insult Sophia makes is more savage, and she keeps going when the others have stopped, because she doesn't know when enough is enough. And the other characters let her get away with it--and Sophia bears no consequence at all--because they all know it's Sophia's dementia talking, and there's nothing to be done about it. If Sophia had all her cognitive facilities, her behavior [aka abuse] would not be tolerated by Blanche or Rose, who would have insisted that Dorothy and Sophia move out. But they are empathetic towards Sophia's condition (and by extension Dorothy), which allows this dynamic to thrive for the duration of the series.

I'm 43. Watched this on primetime back in the '80s. I loved loved loved it! Thought it was hilarious, as a little girl. It wasn't until I was in my twenties and watching it in college on syndication that I realized just how much I had no idea, as a kid, what these ladies were saying. It was awesome because I got to watch it in syndication and it was the same show but took on a whole new meaning! 😂😂😂 Now in my 40s and throughout my thirties, I'd watch it in syndication and a new meaning would jump out at me every now and again, especially being an older woman and hearing these chicks throw shade like they do 🙌🏾 EPIC

Nope. From youngest to oldest: Rue (Blanche), Estelle (Sophia), Bea (Dorothy), Betty (Rose). Rue was ten years younger than Estelle (51 at the start), then Estelle, Bea, and Betty were 61, 62, and 63, respectively. Bea and Betty managed the impossible in Hollywood: a woman portraying a character YOUNGER than her actual age. That is very, very rare.

I used to watch these with my aunts & grandmother. My grandmother was an old Italian lady…very much like Sofia. Whenever I miss them I watch Golden Girls.
