I have a 2019 front wheel drive Camry hybrid. Last December I did a round trip to Spain from the Netherlands, all and all about 5,000km's, about 3,107miles. Of which 2,500 miles on the Freeway @about 62 miles per hour. I came home with 4,3L per 100km on the trip computer, which is 54,7mpg. On my Camry, build in Japan, the trip computer matches the fillup calculation. This is on 18 inch wheels with a whole lot of Freeway cruising. The Camry is more efficient on the Freeway than the 2016 PriusIV that I had before. I am very happy with the the Camry's fuel efficiency.

We have a 2018 Camry LE (non-hybrid) which gets about 33 combined mpg and a 2014 Toyota Prius which still gets about 46 mpg. Both cars have been trouble-free gems. Thinking about getting either a 2025 Camry LE or SE or the new Prius, I am leaning towards the Camry.
That’s a proud dad moment right there when the numbers popped up on your Calculator!😮
This makes me feel so good about my 2025 LE FWD purchase w/ convenience package for 29k OTD! more MPG and faster acceleration is such a win. And in my honest opinion, I love how the 16inch alloy wheels look on it. Especially in underground:)

Those 16" wheels with the taller sidewalls also make for the quietest, plushest ride offered by any Camry. So, with the LE in FWD, you get the lowest price (by far), the best fuel mileage (by far), the plushest ride, the quietest ride, the lowest maintenance costs with the most affordable tires (by far), and the most reliable car, since it's the simplest model, with the least electronic gadgetry. As Kirk said in the video, who cares about flashier wheels? It's a Camry. No one buys a Camry for head-turning style or amazing sporty performance. It's an appliance. It's your consistent, reliable butler, not your sexy PIA trophy wife. It's supposed to remain in the background, always ready, willing, and able to serve you without complaint, and to do so seemingly forever. The Camry LE in FWD with no moonroof...the best daily driver and all-around value in the current automotive world. You chose well.

Kirk, your reviews are the BEST! Thank you! I have driven Toyota hybrids (Prius/Camry/Highlander/NX300h) since 2005. I have tried all three drive modes on all of these models. ECO mode slows down throttle response and HVAC, so my response is to hit the throttle harder and turn up the HVAC, negating the intended effect. Normal mode is normal. Sport mode gives you very fast and sensitive throttle response, so I am lighter on the throttle. Because of the way I drive, my mpg remains the same no matter what mode I use. For me, the easiest way to increase mpg's is to use HVAC in full auto mode, NOT use cruise control, and best of all, coast rather than brake, without annoying other drivers. When coasting or coming to a stop, I have learned how to keep the braking in regen as much as possible without using friction brakes. In my 2020 NX300h I am currently averaging 36 mpg in this car rated at 33/30.

Why are people complaining about the price? The Toyota Camry is one of the best cars in every aspect. There are people who pay double for Chinese cars but then complain about the Camry, despite its price increase. This is a common trend nowadays, as the prices of all cars have risen.
Absolutely true that 16" wheels and tires + FWD instead of AWD makes all the difference in the World. Then if you also use low rolling resistance tires like Michelin Energy Saver A/S, highway fuel economy is boosted even more.

Crown owner here. Stay in the lower half of the eco portion of the radial and you’ll be electric only as long as you have 3 or more bars of electric power. You can find the perfect anchor spot for your foot and basically be pure electric till it’s empty if the road permits. The slow braking is absolutely it, that little part of the radial is great for keeping track. This is my first owned car and it’s been interesting learning the little nuances. I started with about 29.6 mpg in the xle trim…. So yea. I was heavy foot harry for a bit. I’ve climbed from this to now 38.2 mpg. If I reset the reader, I’m sure I could be at a consistent 43 or higher, but I enjoy ticking up slowly but surely. From 27 miles to 10.5k I can wholeheartedly say this hybrid system not only has some kick, but its efficiency is top notch. Next variants I just want more electric capability. Stronger motors for what would essentially be more wiggle room in the electric only driving speeds, larger capacity battery for obvious hopes, and the torque that comes with the additional strength is just gravy. Even just a plug in variant of the crown.

great video. I think there's one more tip. On the gear shifter is a B mode. From what I read this is a heavy regen braking mode. It's not like the B gear in a traditional automatic transmission which was used for downhill slowing. So there's no danger of switching to B at any speed. You can essentially use B as a way to brake, lessening the need for the disc brakes. In fact, if you need to brake in a hurry like an emergency, switch to B while applying the disc brakes hard. It will stop fast. There is so little wear and tear on my brakes on my Prius C because of this.
AWD is the "spare tire" problem of people who say they don't like it deleted "just in case" they get blow out and they feel they will be safe and able to flip it out themselves - BUT if people wait and get used to the out of sight below floor storage they might decide it is really more a "driving" benefit not to mention carrying something that is big and heavy for no driving enjoyment benefit eh.
I would personally get the XSE AWD trim just because I want the handling, extra speed, leather seats, pano roof, and JBL speakers. You can always go on tirerack and get a new set of smaller wheels with michelin all season tires. That way it will still handle quite well because of the michelin tires despite the smaller wheels. The smaller wheels should be able to boost the mpg by 3-4. The camry is still the king when it comes to reliability and practicality. I find it funny that so many people still make fun of camrys and the people who drive them. Jokes on them when they have to deal with major repairs out of nowhere while the people who own camrys can put their money into savings, IRAs, and stocks and watch their money compound year over year.

Love this format! Btw, I have a 2022 Camry SE Nightshade with 12k miles, somehow I average about 42 mpg which I feel like is pretty good for a non-hybrid.
Just another excellent video. Thank you Kirk!

Thank you for showing the gauge monitor while driving. It really shows how it works as you drive a hybrid. Thanks also for explaining in detail how to save fuel while driving. Incidentally, it’s the exact same way I drive my ICE car. I get good gas mileage doing so. I plan on trading for the Highlander Hybrid in the near future. Your video is very helpful.
Camry LE or SE all the way. The XSE is a fantastic car, but i really don't see the value add with 19" wheels
"I believe the "pulse and glide" you mentioned used to be known as "lifting." I had an '08 Prius and did some research on how to maximize mileage. I discovered that if you reached speeds ranging from 20 to 49 MPH, you could slightly release your foot from the accelerator and still maintain the same speed. I didn't come up with this term; I read about it." Love the video.
Overall good video, thanks. The comment section is excellent. The guys who brought got good deals and know value.
Yes, 50 mpgs for a large sedan is incredibly good. Camrys are nice cars. I've got a 2024 Venza, and in town, my trip computer shows over 50 mpgs. On the hwy, it shows around 45 mpgs. However, I haven't done the calculations on my own, but I will be doing that in the future. Excellent video, good job doing the purely highbred explanations.
Thanks, Kirk… This video answered one of my main questions when I get my XSE later this year. I was wondering how many miles you could get a fill up … mine will no doubt be a little lower because I am getting AWD. Very informative.

@@KirkKreifels I agree with you in your video for the best MPG go with the LE… I think it’s a superb. Why buy a Prius?… I did not go with the LE because I like a lot of features and the features that I wanted are in the premium plus package. I lease my new cars so I load them up however I did not opt for the $1500 optional wheels as I could not justify that price… I chose Accessories, some of which I had never had before on a car. In regards to people saying that $45K is a lot for a Camry, which I somewhat agree… Mine is just a tad over $43K… looking for tomorrow of your Camry videos ** I did order all-wheel-drive as I live in the north east and upstate New York and here is in necessity. I currently drive a 22 RAV4 SE hybrid this was my first SUV as I could not get another Camry during Covid because there were none available at the time
Not surprised at the MPG. I had a 2016 Prius that pulled down 70+ mpg at 50 mph with four adults aboard using the same techniques as you. Crazy !!
Excellent video, very informative.
I have a 2021 Toyota Corolla Hybrid LE and I get an average of 70 + MPG City, 62 MPG Highway. LOVE IT!
Great detailed video!
I do exactly how you do it and I get 60mpg on Prius XLE AWD 2023.
LE with sunroof and bigger screen, take my money 💰 👍🏼
at one point i actually got 49MPG on a drive back from work on my 25 SE so im pretty impressed by this new 5th gen hybrid system
Nice looking 4Runner LTD in the background when you stopped to calculate the MPG!
Nice tour of Naples and Bonita Springs - Tamiami Trail :)
We had a Base LE as a rental car this summer on our family vacation and over 700 miles of mixed driving averaged 58-59 mpg with a car full of 4 people + luggage. We drove over 520 miles on less than $30 of fuel all in perfect climate controlled comfort. It was amazing! I can say that the base LE 16" wheel and tire combo doesn't have much grip though. There were several turns the tires started complaining when I didn't feel like it was taking it all that quickly.
I do have to give a credit to Toyota for making current iteration of hybrids very efficient compares to even one generation back. I have the NX350h averaging right at 40mpg which is twice the previous RX350 at 19MPG and still have RX450h at 26MPG. .
Kirk, Yes indeed! The XSE's wide tires and big wheels are completely counterproductive in the pursuit of high mpg. This is just another reason why the LE on 16' wheels is the best bet. As a bonus, tire replacement costs with smaller rims will be a fraction of the cost over the life of the car and the ride will be smoother every single mile driven. 😁😁While we are on the subject of high mpg, just imagine what it must be like getting 70+ mpg in the Yaris Hybrids they sell in other markets. 🤩🤩

Does the width of the tire affect fuel economy? If I get 17" wheels that are the same diameter and width as the 19s, is there any gain in fuel economy?

The big wheels still provide VERY high mpg. Just not as high as the other models might provide. It's RELATIVE. You make it sound like the big wheels end up getting 14 mpg, which isn't true.

@@mrsj1417 Been there done that. Large wheels with low profile tires can be a serious nightmare. The roads where I live are crap and every time I hit a pothole especially after it rains, I start praying that I make it home once the tires start leaking air due to a bent rim. A new tire and wheel is also not cheap. I want nothing to do with large wheels and low profile tires ever again.
There were several reports (from car magazines & EPA) in the last few months that EV manufacturers, especially Tesla, consistently overstate their vehicles' (equivalent) MPG values while many Japanese manufacturers pretty much are spot on with their MPGs from actual driving. I hate to think what would happen to EV drivers forced to scramble to find the nearest charging station(s) due to the inflated MPGs claimed by their manufacturers. And we are even talking about driving in the winter.
Kirk-Close the sunshade when it's hot : )! AWD has no wheelspin or torque steer under acceleration like the FWD so for me I would only buy the AWD.I think the fuel economy is more affected by the 19 inch wheels than AWD.

I agree. I would want AWD and 16" rims to get the best balance of traction and economy. 😁
I own a 2023 RAV4 Hybrid XSE, and here is another tip for better MPGs. This may sound counter-intuitive at first. Spend LESS time in EV mode, and more in "hybrid" mode. The hybrid mode is when both the ICE and battery are moving the car; go to 5:55 - 6:30 and see the energy flow meter (right circle). In hybrid mode, even when the ICE is running, the car is still doing around 60 instantaneous MPG (the white bar in the left circle). Also, keep the battery between 5-7 bars (out of 8) state of charge. The hybrid mode will run even more efficiently when the battery level is high. Since I started doing this in my RAV4 hybrid, my EV driving ratio has decreased, but my MPGs have increased by about 10%.

You mean spend more time in ECO mode
I like the camera setup you have... And not having hills is definitely a plus. Up in Nashville where I do most of my driving there are hills everywhere. They kill the fuel economy. I definitely wish you could test this thing for an entire tank as well. For some reason that math doesn't seem right. My FWD XSE never comes out more than what the dash says, and the absolute best calculated I've gotten one time was 45 mpg(46 on the dash). Usually it's 38-40 calculated. I definitely feel it's partially on me, but the XSE is for sure much harder to get the advertised fuel economy in.
Great Video! Thank You!
Surprising results!
My 2018 Camry with 2.5l consistently gets 43 to 45 mpg on the highway. We bought it new. Since day one the average mpg is 32.1. Some may think this is odd but I use the cruise control as much as possible at all speeds 35 mph and above. Love my CAMRY.
great tips on regen breaking!
Great tips on driving. I love it
I was seriously thinking what you were going to think about the new Camry MPG. there is a TikTok video that went viral about a mom proving that the MPG stated by Toyota is false. At first, I thought she was BS’ing but now that I see your video, it just gives me more assurance.
I have a 2020 LE Camry with 52,000 miles. I often get 54 to 60 mpg in the summer and 48 to 54 in the winter. The mpg increases with more miles on the odometer.
I remember getting 525 miles per tank from the 2021 Avalon. I shouldn’t have sold it but got top dollar for it in early 2022.
You do such a great job and you’re very soft on the eyes.
I’m only averaging 36-37mpg in my 2014 Toyota Prius so I’m highly looking forward to this in my new 2025 Toyota Camry XSE Premium Plus Package AWD. I’m super stoked to pick it up early August 2025!
I’m a ‘14 Prius C driver, and I think you can take off in the “eco zone” and let everyone save some MPGs behind you.

When the Prius first came out we had car pool lanes, they would either go below the speed limit or barely at it. Yeah we loved those guys.
RE: Highway on-ramps - It depends on where you live. Certainly, if the on-ramp is long and allows a leisurely acceleration to highway speed, go for it. But where I live, many of them are short af and require much harder acceleration to safely merge. Basically, "your mileage will very" on this particular tip. Be safe. Otherwise, love your videos man.

The short tight curve on-ramps are fun. Foot to the floor, tire squeal and pray the folks in the travel lane are leaving the proper space between cars: safer than going too slow and trying to merge 20 mph under the flow of traffic (or heaven forbid stop in the middle of the on-ramp).

Most people freak out and over accelerate anyway. 99.999% of the time you don't need a giant burst speed of to merge on the freeway. I have driven damn near everything on wheels in damn near every state, now I deliver in a large Metropolitan area for fun, trust when I say you don't need to slam on the gas to merge. Most people need to learn how to slow down when merging if anything.
I just drive and whatever i get is whatever i get. I obey speed limit and break slowly already so it just works. This new Camry is definitely a hit. Can’t wait to see reliability after 2 years.
For anyone wondering, at $4/gal of gas, the difference between 55mpg and 45mpg over 100K miles is $1600. Its neglibable and useless to worry about that if you are spending 30K+ on a new car. If you really care so much about saving money buy a used car. What im trying to say is buy whichever version you like
I got a Grand Highlander Hybrid Limited last August. We love the huge cabin, tech, cargo, AND it gets incredible gas mileage. My last 2193 miles took 55 gallons = 39.9 mpg and it's rated at 32 highway and 36 city. I'd say 70% of my miles were city highway driving. I just love how smooth Toyotas hybrid system runs. I live in MN and have been using AC. Kirk - do you know if the seat cooling system runs off EV battery too or does it run on engine? That seat cooling feels so nice after a workout or if seats hot.

thank you for saying that hyper milers are selfish! They are just being selfish and jerks. If they wanted to save the planet, they would drive normally so that the rest of the drivers don't get angry and accelerate to get around them (using more fuel). Great instructional video.

Thank You‼️🏁🏆
We were given a 2025 SE Camry for long term rental. The display in front if the driver can be changed to show a multitude of information including charging and power distribution. Just use the arrow buttons. The instant torque can ruin mpg because no Camry has been like that 😂
I bought a 2015 prius to try out the hybrid life and have been so impressed with the fuel milage. I think within a year ill trade this in for the new camry.
My son says a times he has made it to 60mpg on his 2025 XSE. So there’s that.
50mpg. Crushing it!
When you drive a hybrid for a long time and get good with the hybrid system, you'll soon find that around town you'll be in EV mode around 70% of the time. It's at that point you realise how amazing hybrids are and you'll be thinking as well, what's the bloody point of a full EV!

I like getting a thrill out of driving, not just getting to my destination. I can definitely see the attraction to full EV especially performance models that can get to 100mph faster than a hybrid can get to 60. Get a little open stretch of highway or an on-ramp with no traffic mash it down and have some fun. Model 3 performance does 0-60mph in 3.1 seconds, 0-100mph in 8.2
