I heard a story tonight about a high number for cars being stolen in Ottawa. The story made it sounds as the criminals were getting quite brazen, stealing cars in daylight. They were scanning key fob codes, getting and driving away. I have long since realized that an old fashioned key is safer way to operate almost any locked device. I would love to see you post a video about this issue. I truly respect your advice!

I owned a 2023 Hyundai Elantra Hybrid Limited and now have a 2024 Toyota Corolla Hybrid XLE (both top of the line models) so I can provide real world comparisons The Elantra's battery died within the first two weeks of ownership. If it sat more than 12 hours you couldn't start it and had to use the emergency reset button which entailed about ten minutes of work . Hyundai did buy back the car at full price but this was after four months of non use. When running it had some items I preferred over the Corolla such as more interior space and storage, a bit larger trunk, faster acceleration, heated steering wheel and larger dash/gps screens. The Corolla has a traditional interior which I prefer, more comfortable seats, better mpg (59.2 @ 3k miles so far) and it rides smoother. I like the optional 9 speaker/800 watt JBL stereo over the Elantra's 8 speaker Bose. It was also $2K cheaper. Most of all though is the piece of mind having a reliable/dependable mode of transportation for my daily 78 mile r/t commute.

That's just a bad luck, not a real usual experience. Had the 2022 model since the release and not even one problem in the Canadian winter, lol

My 2020 Toyota Corolla hybrid has 243,000 miles, zero issues just regular maintenance and tires. I plan on making it to over 500,000 miles.

I just booked 2024 Corolla Hybrid AWD LE. I got it without any markups or dealer added fees. It should be coming by end of this month. I did this based on your suggestion since I am planning to keep it for long term. Hyundai is known for their issues and multiple recalls. I had bought 2022 Highlander hybrid based on your recommendation and we are so happy with it.

@@verynick, definitely, but in certain situations people do need the AWD for better on-road capabilities. Myself I went with a real 4x4 off-roader (Suzuki Jimny) for difficult mountain paths (unpaved, very difficult "roads", impossible to pass for an AWD when it's raining heavy or when there is plenty of snow), leading to some construction sites where I am building off-line, active houses.

In Canada, they have the some 5.3" of ground clearance for AWD and non AWD ( Hybrid ) models. My choice for AWD is more do do with the amount of rain we get in BC, not necessarily snow ( or I would have bought a RAV4 or a Subaru )

I placed a deposit on the 2024 Corolla Hybrid SE AWD at the beginning of January.... I have no idea when Toyota will allocate the car to the dealership in Calgary, AB.

I agree with just about everything you say here, except for the interior. You said they were close but gave the edge to the Corolla?! Sorry, they're not close at all. The interior of the Elantra is miles ahead of the utilitarian Corolla interior. It's elegant and refined, upscale, very modern yet practical. Hyundai's Infotainment system is widely regarded as the best in the business. The Corolla's interior is its one, and perhaps only, weak point; it looks like something out of the old Soviet era. People buy Corollas DESPITE their interior, not because of it. The Corolla is the obvious choice, but the one win the Elantra gets, is its interior.

@@carhelpcorner I have to agree. I test drove Elantra hybrid. Yes it does feel more refine and elegant but is that something to break the deal. Absolutely no! I had Hyundai sonata 2011 which stalled on middle of highway. They had multiple recalls. Who wants to go thru those pain or headache ? I rather have basic interior than sit and wait at dealership for hours.

Yep, Hyundai/Kia design appeals more to people that value the superficial look over the durability, so that part is better with the Koreans than with the Japanese interior design for most people (but not to me and many others valuing the most important characteristics - reliability, low cost, durability etc. - over the superficial ones). The fact that Koreans are mainly clunkers (see their rankings by Consumer Reports annual reliability surveys, mechanics' statistics on Total Cost of Ownership and their residual value big drop) is more than enough reason to avoid them, despite their interior design (showing off vs. the discreet Japanese one), entertainment etc. However, writing that Corolla interior is resembling the old Soviet era makes me think of two possibilities: 1) you know too little about the "style" of the Soviet era (I am living in an ex-Soviets' satellite country and I am a designer, thus I am quite familiar with the brutal, utilitarian, at best Bauhaus style of the end of the last century - at the limit closer to my Suzuki Jimny utilitarian interior, but very, very far away from Corolla's interior); 2) you exaggerated how nice the Korean design looks, maybe being thrilled by their "opulent" appearance too much to even consider drive-testing a Corolla - which I did, therefore I cannot fully agree with your take on it. I also witnessed few times how a Hyundai looks after almost the same time as an older Toyota - even Koreans' fans would then choose the Toyota 😏

@@codincoman9019 Wow, condescend much? I think you completely missed the point of my post. As I said, I agree with just about everything said about the superiority of the Corolla. But when it comes to interiors, the Hyundai wins hands down. No, I'm not a child impressed by shiny, superficial objects; it's just nicer, has infinitely better tech (a huge component of today's vehicle interiors) and is a more refined finish. To say otherwise is just being influenced because you want to choose the Corolla, but going feature by feature, if you're not objective when the vehicle you like less actually comes out ahead on one aspect, then you lose credibility. You're right, I didn't "drive-test" a Corolla; my mother owned one and I drove it many, many times. I've also rented Corollas for the day on numerous occasions. So yeah, I have a pretty good idea what they look like. As for quoting consumer reports, check out 2023 JD Power rankings. They put Kia (Hyundai's sister brand) as having the fewest problems of all mass market car brands (3rd overall) with 159 problems reported per 100 vehicles. Toyota was 7th with 168 and Hyundai was 8th with 170. Not trying to convince anyone to choose a Hyundai over a Toyota, I certainly wouldn't, but you can find stats to back up just about any viewpoint. Anyway, it seems my point has been misinterpreted, either intentionally or obtusely; just because I think the Elantra has a better interior, doesn't mean I think it is the better car. But for some reason, being realistic enough to state the obvious, seems to make me gullible and uninformed in some eyes.

Hyundai hybrid doesn't have long established reliability of Toyota hybrid.. DCT on Elantra doesn't have droning sound of Toyota 's E -CVT although long term durability of itsS DCT remains questionable..

I can’t see how the Hyundai Elantra is a “pretty good car” when the transmission has been recalled so many times and there are so many horror stories

Seems that whenever the Hyundai has the advantage, it isn’t by much. But, when the Corolla has the advantage, it is far superior?? The exterior design may not be for everyone, but it shows how boring the Corolla is. It is something that Toyota has been accused of for many of its models. The vehicles are overall great cars if you can completely overlook the styling. The interior of the Elantra is leaps and bounds above the Corolla.

Thanks for the excellent, detailed review. The Elantra interior and styling look so much better than the boring Corolla and I was inclined that way. However, after watching your comparison I’m crossing the Elantra off my list 😢.

Honestly, I have the 2022 Elantra Hybrid and not a single problem that this man mentioned. Excellent acceleration in sport mode, 4.3L/100Km on a daily basis in summer... I suspect this guy pushing for Toyota because of all his videos is about a supposed "Toyota superiority" 😂

There is no "supposed" superiority, there is a real superiority, proven by statistics vs. some snowflakes' feelings. Korean fanbois are very upset that the cars they are driving are far less reliable and more costly to own, thus they are lying most of the time. Consumer Reports annual reliability surveys for the last years show Toyota at the top (usually #2, beside #1 Lexus), while only one of Kia or Hyundai barely making it to the bottom of the Top 10 recently. Between them there are at least Mazda, Honda, Acura, Subaru, Suzuki (not in the USA). I cannot understand people not researching statistics and buying anything else than Japanese cars. I don't even have a Toyota, but I do have a Lexus and I managed the budgets for fleets of hundreds of cars and Toyota, Mazda, Honda and Suzuki proved to be superior to both Kia and Hyundai or European brands.

I would have a problem with DCT transmission of the Elantra, I have 4 Accents 2016-2020 all turbo diesel and one tuned to put out 202 wheel torque and all of them have been flawless but I wouldn't trust the Intelligent Variable Transmission yet. The Hyundai with DCT automatic gives normal feedback to stomping the accelerator.

Toyota will sell replacement battery packs 10-15 years from now. I doubt Hyundai will.

I keep seeing information that says Toyota is the way to go, and not just from you.

And it is not only your heart, it is about data, measurements, statistics - all confirming what you wrote. The Japanese top cars are all champions of their respective segment. There is no better country of origin. Some are choosing Koreans (that are indeed a better quality/price ratio than the expensive Germans), but they are less reliable, have plenty of recalls, they have a higher TCO (Total Cost of Ownership) than the top Japanese cars, despite being most times cheaper at acquisition, they have cheesy interiors, less refinement etc. Those people are attracted to the Koreans by the trendy (but not timeless) design, marketing etc. Their money, their choice. But most people that bought a Japanese car after a Korean one will never return to the previous brand - myself included (0 recalls in the last years for my 3 Japanese champions, 2 recalls from my Korean company car in a year!).

You're still using your gas engine up to 70% of the time. The Toyota warranty is a deal- breaker for me. Hyundai all the way here. Went from an Accord hybrid to the smaller elantra hybrid with better warranty. Couldn't be happier.

Hyundai has a 5 year/60k mile basis warranty and a 10 year/100k power terrain warranty; while toyota has 3 year/36k mile basic and a 5 year/60k power terrain. Ik toyota has already proven its reliability, but hyundai has stepped up in styling, technology, and engineering. Thats why they are now backing their claims with their warranty. Idk i wish toyota would just have a better warranty. I know they run forever. I have one, but the tech and styling are just so boring. im thinking about getting a hyundai. Especially when even the mpg is better on the elantra now, too.

For most people a functional car is a must, therefore they don't want to have a higher probability of malfunction - that is a fact, statistically proven for the Korean car. So, because time is the most precious resource for smart people, they should not make an economy on money with the high risk of loosing time with the car malfunctioning, taking it to service etc. I shall never buy a Korean, German car for my use - unless they will replace the Japanese in the reliability and low TCO surveys.

Kia and Hyundai have had engine fires. Blows my mind how many Americans fail to research anything when spending thousands of dollars 🙄😑. I'm a Toyota fan, but even Toyota has its failures so do your due diligence and make a wise decision.

@@merlenef666, depends on your needs and budget. If you will get specific, you will get recommendations. Without them, there are too many cars to recommend (at least one for each segment). But, as a rule of thumb, the recommendations go to the top Japanese, naturally aspirated engines or hybrids, probably second-hand (buying a sh after a few years below half price means you'll use the car at least three times more than the initial owner who spent the same amount of money as you will for that reliable vehicle), at the top of their segment (based on the Consumer Reports latest reliability survey and on mechanics' statistics on Total Cost of Ownership).

@@merlenef666 If you could actually get a Hyundai with DCT automatic, it would be fine but I wouldn't trust the IVT they have gone to yet as it's not out of teething problems yet. Failing getting a DCT auto, I would have to say Toyota Corolla for the money. Camry Hybrid if you are splurging a little. I'm not a big fan of the current prius format even though you get a 2.0L engine and more power, and I almost never turn down more power for about the same fuel mileage.

The civic hybrid is gonna sell like hot cakes this summer in North America

The only way l'd buy a Hyundai Hybrid is if it was $5k USD cheaper. Between engine fires, past Hyundai catastrophic releases, cheesy interiors...it'll take $5k USD to risk it. The resale on these are bound to just as crappy as in the past. Hyundai is no longer a bargoon as it was in the past, while it follows Mazda's course to mainstream pricing.

Still, I would go for Corolla (not that I need it, I drive a Lexus, a Miata, a Jimny - those cars should outlast me by a lot), as no price reduction from Hyundai can offset the time needed to fix their issues. The TIME is the most precious currency for us and too many people cannot understand this. That's why for me the main values are reliability, low TCO (Total Cost of Ownership), performance (and I mean suitability to their segment, not pure figures of braking - OK, this is important -, acceleration etc.) including mpg, handling, comfort etc. I am only buying the clear champions of each car segment I need for my pleasure/work. But I drive-test a lot the top cars [and tyres], it is a habit from my very active times and I still get invited to launches/events - and Lexus, Toyota, Mazda, Suzuki, Subaru, Mitsubishi [and Bridgestone, Falken, BF Goodrich] etc. deserve their place at the top. Moreover, the Japanese top producers are the best strategists - the hybrids are growing a lot, the naturally aspirated engines are still being improved, while the BEV Marxist scam is shown for what it is.

What's a Honda Civic Hybrid a guarantee you to get satellite radio you have to get the highest trim level and a Mazda 3 I don't even think you can get satellite radio anymore

We had a 2022 Corolla and we liked it but it wasn't big enough inside.

The Toyota is Better hands down.

The interior and tech of the Elantra totally blows away the Corolla. Toyota with its “infotainment” stuck on as if an afterthought is a joke compared to the neatly integrated Elantra screens on the limited. Yes Toyota is the hybrid king, but the styling inside and out of the Elantra makes the corolla look very dated.

Infotainment is vastly overrated, and mostly irrelevant. In my car, I usually have it set to displaying the clock. Occasionally I use it for directions. Aside from music (playlist off the phone).... that's all I need.

The Toyota does 0-60 in what 9.7 seconds? Ridiculous. I like a car that has some passing power too, and the Corolla Hybrid is just too dang SLOW.

@@eppyz, are you seriously asking such a question ❓⁉️ Because I wrote quite clearly, suggesting that there should be no expectations of high (racing) performance from mainstream cars such as the hybrids and that maybe "racebois" can get rid of the slow normal cars with a sport badge such as GR (I am so, so sorry, even that GR is not enough for you, probably you are a very famous pilot with you old Evo - btw, I drove an Evo IX, quite impressive). However, for me it's now obvious that a heavy-footed individual would write that normal cars are too slow for him. I am also into racing, but I can stay objective and don't expect the high performance from mass-market cars like the one coming from a Lancer Evo or even a Corolla GR. You can't. But that's your issue, not mine. Be cerebral.

What is your definition of "normal" My VW Golf gets 50mph is that normal? I drive my Lancer Evo "Normal" I don't race it? My statement is the Corolla hybrid is extremely slow in its class. There are other hybrids in the price range that have much better acceleration and still get great fuel economy. So if you like the Corolla great good for you, I will never buy it because you can get a Prius for a little bit more and has MUCH better performance without sacrificing economy. The Elantra too in the video would be a better option for those seeking performance AND economy. That's all my statement is about.

The bias comments are so obvious. Many other auto reports were really impressed with the Hybrid system on the new Elantras even more so than the new Corollas . In 2024 Consumers Report puts this Hyundai Elantra near the top in its class.

Really?!?... And where is Toyota Corolla hybrid ranked in the same 2024 reliability survey from Consumer Reports? Even the 2024 Initial Customer Satisfaction survey from JD Power (that is about max. 3 years for client adaptation to the car's features, not about reliability - measured by CR for at least 5 years by more than 300'000 owners) is placing Toyota at the top (together with the #1, Lexus, just like in 2024 CR reliability survey), while Hyundai/Kia are far below, because the number of issues per 100 cars grew a lot (the truth eventually came out). I guess the comment comes from a Korean fanboi/owner, ignoring the harsh reality of the car he drives: less reliability and dependability, bigger TCO (Total Cost of Ownership), some recalls etc. (lost time servicing the car), lower mpg and less smoothness vs. Corolla, leading to a pretty lower resale value than that of the objective #1 Corolla (which I don't even like, except their GR - I drive a Lexus, a Miata and a Jimny, all clear champions of their own segment), but the statistics are obviously better than those related to Elantra. Still, Hyundai Elantra is a better car, with a nicer design than most other clunkers (the planned obsolescence is real, affecting all car owners), I hope you will have no issues, aside from the recalls. For that, an aggressive maintenance (like changing the oil each 3000 miles and once in 2 times changing the oil filter) might save you from most possible issues, costing you far less than doing the bare minimum that the dealership is requesting for the warranty (they want you to go often to them after the warranty is over). Your money, your choice.

yeah these comments are highly biased towards toyota lol. and they sound like robots repeating the same points. everywhere i read the elantra hybrid is awesome in 2024.

The problem with Toyotas is that they're reliable, but incredibly uncomfortable. They absolutely o not care about the technology or interior quality.

Sadly, Hyundai/KIA have gone the "Made in China" route to design/build quality & service. So, no thanks. Even Toyota has lapsed on their quality over the last 5-6 years.

Even if I thought that your opinion is dumb and not related to this mostly technical video. Moreover, I tried to be nice, stating that I like some reds too, even though the main parameters (such as reliability, costs, handling etc.) are far more important to me than the colour. For hybrids is very simple: Toyota/Lexus always win with smoothness, refinement, reliability, costs, longevity etc. Hyundai/Kia/Genesis is less reliable (=lost time), more costly, far less refined (more show off), with too many recalls, thus a far lower resale value etc. Honda/Acura is in between, thus it is pretty stupid to buy a Korean clunker instead of a reliable Japanese hybrid, especially Toyota/Lexus (that is now hybridizing Mazda, Suzuki etc.).

Play Corollas all-wheel drive is basically a fake all-wheel drive all it has the 7 horsepower motor on the rear wheels which is shown to not be efficient

Agree that the AWD doesn't deserve the extra money, especially vs. a real 4x4 or even vs. the Subaru's SAWD. But the marketing is working plus for most people the AWD is helpful in wet/slippery curves etc.

I don't know what he's saying the Hyundai definitely feels faster

Probably get deleted but I need help and all you can do is delete my comment. I have no idea if anyone will see this. I doubt it so why not. I have major car trouble, again. This car is driving, ha ha, me crazy. It wont start again. It does this sometimes It is getting very unreliable. We have dr appts to get to, one is 30 miles away. I dont want to get stranded. I have had it to multiple mechanics. When they see it, everything checks out fine I have had it towed a couple times, today it was again. It is dead, right now anyway. I need help. I have tried car forums, no one has any clue, but its something electrical. Well no DUH. It wont start, then its fine. it wont shut off all the way, then its fine, I have to disconnect the battery because if I leave it sit too long, it dies. Alternator, starter, everything checks out fine. Have had it towed when its dead, but when the garage checks on it the next day it starts right up. AAAAHHHHHH Im going crazy. Have had a new battery 6 times in the last year. Autozone has to keep replacing it because they get it and the battery checks out as no good. There are a few programs for low income or disabled people to get help with cars. They are all overextended or not in this area. There are no buses around here. Luckily Walmart started delivering not long ago. But we need to get to the dr. Otherwise I wouldnt worry about it. There is no trade in value because it keeps dying. I have no credit, I have run up the bills trying to figure this out. And then a few months ago I had to stop paying the credit card because all the shocks and struts went out at the same freaking time. Im at a loss.
