I find it funny how sometimes you explain things "if you read the playtest, you know this" and other times "if you haven't read the playtest" and then proceed to explain it. I stopped reading the playtest materials about 10-12 months ago so I have no idea what's going on in those documents anymore and I very much appreciate when you use the "if you haven't read the playtest" version of your explanations!

It's like when they make out as if they've been working hard on a new feature, only for them to start describing something that's been there since Tasha's. And sometimes they don't even say they've just taken it from Tasha's, so I'm grateful that Chris always makes sure to remind people of the features that aren't "brand new" but are actually "no longer just an optional feature".

Man, they were really hammering in how the _Spells_ are what makes a wizard what they are. I really thought we were going to get more examples of spells, or at very least spell rules, because there really wasn't much change to the base wizard class to talk about. Especially when he talked about the Abjurer, that would have been a perfect time to discuss any potential changes to counterspell, or given their Spell Breaker feature, about how Bonus Action spells will be treated in the rules now.

  • @feltrix334

    @feltrix334

    4 күн бұрын

They probably didn't talk about Counterspell because it's (probably) nerfed. If they are, in fact, letting you cast two leveled spells in a turn, this definitely would have been the time to break that out. Perhaps you can't cast the bonus action Dispel Magic if you've cast a leveled spell this turn?

I just open my subscription page as the first page whenever I open youtube. Then I open all videos from my subs and just go through them. I really don't understand why you and people like you are so heavy on telling people to turn on notifications. Don't you people browse the subscription page? I'm not a fan of notifications in general. When I want to see something, I'll go see it. No need to "notify" me about something. I'll see it when I see it. Who cares about your recommendation feed? That's youtube trying to guess what you like. They're pretty shit at it. Your subscription page should be your "home" page. And you only venture into the cesspool known as "youtube recommendations" after you watched all the videos from your subs. Wizards with 2024 subclasses get 63 guaranteed spells now, plus any help the DM might provide. I really like this, I’d always have many doubts when considering which spells to choose CORRECTION - according to ddb, they only get the additional choices of spells when they get access to a new level of spell slot, so it would be 9 additional spells (2 on level 3 and 1 more on each odd level until 17, including) for 53 total spells known. I'd like it better if it were 63, but 53 isn't bad I guess

  • @josephrion3514

    @@josephrion3514 I honestly don't understand what you're saying. You get 2 additional spells at 3rd level and after that it's 1 whenever you get access to a new level of spell slot, so only on odd levels (5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15, 17), totaling 7 more spells, which makes for 9 additional spells, beside the 44 you get from being a wizard (6 at level 1 and 2 more every other level = 6 + 2*19 = 6 + 38 = 44), so 44 + 9 = 53

The martial vs caster is still a thing, but i see some progretions. A thing that i think a lot is: Martials are a lot dependent of the abilities. If the spells was ajusted to use the characters stats and proficient bonuses, theyr progression could be smoothier btweeen the levels. To set an example thats is not overpower but bit too much in early levels, the pass whithout trace spell add +10 in stealth checks. If it adds wis bonus plus proficient bonus in stealth checks, It would start with something like +5 or +6 in the first tear, and ending up with +11 in hight levels. To mention the wizard, inteligence for shield spell adding +3 AC in the 1st level, up to +5 in the 8th. Other spells could be rebalanced to became less overpower but ajusted to been better upcasted. Using the fire ball example, could star in 6d6 damagewith upcast 2d6 per slot level above 3. The 5th spell slot level would still causes 10d6 (9th char level), but less overpower in the when you gain it (5th char level). To end up my point, other spells could be upcasted to bring more options that would make other playestyles surpass the "aways better way to play with this class". It makes the player decides where to invest its slots with more variaty. The Mage Armor Spell, for example, could be upcasted for +1 AC for every 2 levels above 1 (pretty sure that no one would think of uses a 9th level slot to put 17 AC in its wizard, but a 5 spell slot to 15 or something like that could be a good trade that made the aways used spells less frequent). The spells designe would make more variable casters and made theyr progression more in line with martials

Some calculation for 3 different "tank" subclasses of casters: At level 3: Abjurer wizard: 9 extra hp/long rest or 29 if you waste all resources on abjuration spells. No other defensive features. Moon druid: 36 extra hp/long rest. No ability to add more, also gives AC bonus. Fiend warlock: 6-144 extra hp/long rest. (depending on encounters) At level 6: Abjurer wizard: 16 extra hp/long rest or 60 if you waste all resources on abjuration spells. No other defensive features. Moon druid: 90 extra hp/long rest. Or 270 if you burn slots, also gives AC bonus. Fiend warlock: 10-240 extra hp/long rest. Give bonus to saves. At level 10: Abjurer wizard: 25 extra hp/long rest or 107 if you waste all resources on abjuration spells. No other defensive features. Moon druid: 180 extra hp/long rest. Or 630 if you burn slots, also gives AC bonus. Fiend warlock: 15-360 extra hp/long rest. Give bonus to saves. And give damage resistance of your choice. I also can add twilight domain cleric and clockwork sorcerers stats here, when they reveal cleric and sorcerer next week, but we all know how they will look like.

I didn't hear anything about Malleable Illusions here, I have been enjoying it on my current wizard messing with my Creation and Seeming. If it doesn't violate your NDA, could you confirm whether it is still present? Overall pretty pleased with the Wizard redesign, even if the above is/isn't confirmed. Thanks for the breakdown!

Yours is definitely my favorite reaction to these videos. Your having taken notes on the actual PHB has of course been a fantastic help to make these videos what they are. I still have to question all these 1/long rest abilities they keep handing out to classes and subclasses. My character sheet is going to be twice as long with things I can barely even use. Definitely isn't going to speed up the table.

With the new Savant feature I’m curious if any of the spell school wizards need to worry about running out of school spells to learn for levels they can access. It might still incentivize wizards to avoid taking too many spells from their school so they still have spells to take with this feature as they level up. It’s still in a better place than the 2014 feature.

So minor illusion to make a cloud of opaque smoke around the target, and then a ranged attack cantrip with advantage since the target can no longer see you and you can see through your own illusions. Seems like a nice low-level buff.

Sad not to see spellcraft making the cut, that feature truly felt like the core that they missed, maybe in a lesser form like getting the ability to change a spell once at a certain level or several points in progression

Minor Illusion as a bonus action sounds nuts. You can basically put each round a barrel over yourself to block line of sight. That can make quite some spells and tactics null and void.

I am disappointed that the Abjurer did not get the same treatment that the the War Domain Cleric recieved (from playtest). Guided Strike and War God's Blessing from 2014 5E War dom were combined into 1 feature. Why wasn't Arcane Ward and Projected Ward combined into 1 feature? It's the same pool of hp whether it affects you or others. I feel like the Abjurer got a raw deal on this. They're effectively a feature short of other subclasses with a similar feature. EDIT: Also, is the bonus action spellcasting rule still in effect in 2024 5E? If it is, then then Dispel Magic as a bonus action is not necessarily all that significant. You get a cantrip or the Dodge or Disengage action.

Potent Cantrip should also give Int damage to cantrips right at 3rd so their cantrips are at least as potent as Eldritch Blast.

If the new illusionist can cast minor illusion as a BA, we really need to know what the bonus action casting rule is now (honestly not sure if its been said already). Because if it's relaxed to allow levelled spells with BA cast, that's a subtle casted distraction, or even cover, every turn from the illusionist.

  • @UltimateMustacheX

I'm currently playing an illusionist in a campaign (2014 version). I just got to level 5, and we've had plenty of weeks where people work, so we may be there for a while (we've also got a planned break to do a one shot after our current quest). If the new handbook is out before I hit level 6, I'm going to show the changes to my DM and hope he lets me swap the lv 6 feature (if not use the whole subclass change). I'll also show him the glossary for illusions, since it feels like the few times I cast them, they barely accomplish anything. That may be partially because we've yet to encounter guards/etc. to give good opportunities for illusions to solve the problem, but I also think the DM just has some trouble buying into them in general. All our battles have been in large open rooms with little to no obstructions, so I can't even use the environment to my advantage with illusions. And the fighting illusions will be a big help for me in battle. One of the other players clearly wants me to take fireball, but I told him I'll need to set up an in world reason first, since it doesn't fit my vibe. I was recently contemplating asking the DM if I could re-skin it as psychic damage to have is be illusory, but I assume that's going to require hefty nerfs for balance, since that damage type is stronger than just swapping fire for cold or lightning. But depending on the new modify feature, I might be able to apply that to various spells to keep my vibe (assuming the DM let's me incorporate all of that into the 2014 version).

Shadow Conjuration goes back to 1e. There was also Shadow Magic that let you cast a fireball that did a fraction of the damage if the target recognized it was an illusion. (Of course the 1e illusionist took such a back seat to the magic-user that they had a 7th level spell called “first level magic-user spells.”

Which in turn manifested in 3/3.5 as (Greater) Shadow Evocation. I miss these spells somewhat, although spellcasting is already less restrictive now that you don't need to prepare each slot, so its utility is diminished from that era.
