Nah, the nerf was needed. The sheer bulk a Moon Druid could gain, even at low levels, woule often turn combats into a slog. The amount of THP they can gain, esp given the fact that they have more wildahape uses on tap, is more than enough.@@CecilQuetzalcoatl

@@nathans9764Truthfully the problem was people not following the general to specific rule when addressing this. Game rule Class ability Subclass ability Spell or item This means that unless the Subclass, Class, or game rule explicitly overrides what is said. The spell or item rule should be the one followed RAW. And that is how the sage advice ruled the interaction. It sucked for the Druid that thought they still had their own HP to chew through but it makes sense. Thanks to Adventurers League for drilling this system into our heads and resulting in 5e Renerfed to try and prevent RAW mechanics that might be fun and/or above average.

Another important thing to note with Primal Strike and Lunar Form that are different from the playtest: The extra damage only applies ONCE PER TURN, rather than adding to each attack. This means that it doesn't scale better with beasts that have multiattack over those that don't. Hopefully this means that more beasts can be viable in combat rather than heavily favoring ones that have it. Obviously this depends on the updated stat blocks, but in theory it will open up more options.

I have to say Druid looks awesome, moon druids wild shapes having less of an hp buffer generally than before is maybe bad, but with the massive buff to ac it might be the same effective hp buffer in most real combat so we’ll see, and since they can use spell slots they can be more liberal with wild shapes so it might also not be as big of a deal to wildshape two of even 3 times in a combat to keep getting a new big temporary hitpoint pool. But after the martial classes we’ve seen and Druid+warlock I think it’s pretty clear that the martial caster divide will still be around if spells are generally at a similar strength. It won’t be as big of a deal, and martials will have more options it seems so they’ll be less boring “I attack. 18 to hit. 12 damage. Turn over” to play but they’ll still lag behind and they’ve given casters much better features to make their overall class and subclass features equal to or surpassing martial characters, when the general features they get (spellcasting vs the martial suite of extra attack, fighting style, weapon+armor, and now weapon masteries) still are no where near equal, especially at 7th level+. It might not matter too much if the truly overpowering spells are toned back and martials feel versatile and interesting enough to play, but the “it’s called WIZARDS of the coast” meme doesn’t seem to be going anywhere if other spellcasters have features this good And to be clear I think the useful features spellcasters get now is a good change when compared to the sometimes nothingness that was their 2014 subclasses (looking at you land Druid and archfey warlock from 2014, just no really particularly good abilities that are going to feel like core abilities) but Martials also need a much broader and much stronger scaling ability to bring them in line with the strength of spells, something strong enough that paladins and rangers only get a partial version of like how they get half casting.

I like the change they did with Improved Lunar Radiance where now it does 2d10 extra damage ONCE instead of 1d10 per attack, because the way it was before punished you for choosing stat blocks that did only one attack and encouraged u to pick the ones with multi-attack, i remember this was a change that u wanted and suggested and i'm happy they did it, i hope they did that change with Fount of Moonlight too, remove the multiple attack part of it but increase the damage to compensate

Indeed, though I would probably ask my DM to customize a background for Magic Initiate to pick up Healing Word, Shillelagh, and Magic Stone or Thorn Whip without needing to multiclass. I hope the Wis-focused Ranger is still viable though Polearm Master might not work with Quarterstaff anymore.

For thorn whip, as long as it works somewhat similarly to how it does currently, it has a range of 30 ft to place the thorn whip and THEN the vine makes a melee spell attack, so it should still interact with the increased range as you're not making a melee spell attack with a range of 30 ft, you're summoning a vine up to 30 ft away that makes a melee spell attack.

I’ve always loved druid so much only because of their spell list. Other than shepherd (which you have conveniently updated 👍) it felt like subclasses never had anything to offer, so I always felt like I was playing the super OP druid, with a shepherd or a low level moon,or playing a subclass-less druid. I’m excited the subclasses may matter now

I never experienced it that druid players wanted a "warden" style druid (that is what the ranger was for I thought). The druids that I've known were either spell casters with a staff and Shillelagh or Wild Shapers. In either case, there was no need for heavy armor or martial weapons (though the metal armor thing was a little silly). I haven't seen the video about rangers yet so I guess if they changed it significantly, that would validate the druid now filling in with the "warden" style of play.

At least Wizards finally acknowledged non-moon druids largely reserve wild shape for non-combat uses. It was so frustrating during the UA process, with JCrawford talking like all druids used wild shape for combat.

@@samflory Sure, wild shape gives a bunch of hit points which can be useful in specific situations, but the tactical downsides are great. You get less AC, abysmal attacks, and can't cast spells. In short, a wild shaped non-moon druid is not helping their party win the fight.

With "largely the same" as TCE and only speaking about the base class I'd assume it's unchanged, leaving it weaker than every Druid subclass in the new PHB because it's the only one that doesn't get subclass spells (other than Guidance a few Guiding Bolts from Star Map I guess), and crappy Constellation options like Archer and Chalice that don't adequately scale past tier 2, making Dragon the only real choice long-term, and Cosmic Omen sucks because it's roughly a coinflip each day as to what effect you're getting and even then the 1d6 is painfully applied before the roll is made, often wasting your reaction and resources for no reason because it was going to fail or succeed anyway, and it's just worse than the comparable Bard feature. Full of Stars is just underwhelming when high CR monster design is moving away from BPS.

As somebody who LOVES moon druid and loves searching through new campaign books or just the monster manual for forms, I went into this update fully prepared to see my favourite subclass sacrificed for the greater good... And I did not realize just how happy I could possibly be to see it still alive and well I don't play moon druid for the insane amount of hit points, I play it for the moments where you come to the table and freak out because you found an official stat block for A FREAKING VELOCIRAPTOR and I thought I would never get that feeling again

They must have thought about that huge hole in Monster design and created Beasts options that can be used from Level 1 to Level 20. _Right?_ 😅 I'd say that adding the Beast trait to a lot of Monstrosities would do the trick for the ones that are clearly overdeveloped versions of animals that became monstrous.

Even with better AC, I’m not convinced 3x Druid lvl will be enough temp hp. The old moon druid though overturned, was about 30-40 extra hp at lvl 2. Here at 3 we’re just getting 9. I think bump up all druids wild shape to 2x druid lvl, then moon druids 4 or 5x druid level. (4 would bring it in line with Spores Druid). Hard to say though, regardless overall I think the moon druid comes out stronger, especially past lvl 5.

I was a moon druid player but stopped using my druid. Yes I had a good hp bump but the low ac meant I quickly got knocked out of wildshape. This new AC is not enough to counteract the much lower hp bump.

The changes to the druid are nice, but I do not feel any more the true "shapechanger" vibe I got by playing the 2014 Moon druid. Elemental shape and seamlessly shifting humanoid forms was very very cool. That is a huge loss, in my opinion. I also hope they bring back truly druidic spells like Turn Wood, Metal to Wood, Ironwood, and the like, and make them only available to druids (and obviously Bards), to make me feel more the identity of the class.

  • 8 күн бұрын

As long time druid player, I must say I am really pleased and impressed by these changes. All 4 subclasses are now really enticing, and I want to try them all equally, which definitely wasn't the case before. But even more than pure power level, I really dig the increased versatility, build options, and qol features like communicating in beast form, or much less restrictive wild shape use (especially from level 5 onwards) with possible replenishment by spell slots and bonus action use, whole class feels much more fun, enjoyable, with less artificial restrictions.

I defintely like what they have done. I was not so pleased about primal order magician and its equivalent in the cleric until he said Nature and Arcana checks. I looked at the cantrips and found reasons to take it now for druids so it doesn't seem as obvious to take warden/protector.

Cool!! I love that you can no longer be stuck with having different types of druids in your campaign world, like druids of the north being tundra specialists while desert druids are masters of the dunes. Now it's way cooler that every druid can be every other kind of druid with just a rest! This is a great change, and is diverse, in that every druid is tactically able to be any druid ever, wow such diversity and tactics! It's great that we have the diversity of everything being the same now! Amazing! Perfect!

I'm not really happy with where the Moon druid ended up, but I will reserve final judgement until after the Monster Manual comes out. Still, losing elemental forms seems like an enormous nerf. (Would it have been so hard to create a lycanthrope-like form instead to keep the moon theme and have good combat/tanking prowess?) My current pet peeve with the designers is seeing them randomly throw a teleport onto a class/subclass/species feature when they don't know what else to do. I really like what I have seen from the Land druid redesign though. Looking forward to trying that out sometime soon.
