I haven’t been able to watch all of these, but from what I’ve seen, The Last Repair Shop is my favorite from all 3 categories. Beautiful doc about an LA repair shop for musical instruments showing many different perspectives that are both funny and heartfelt.

Lovely breakdown! I agree about WAR IS OVER. I think it was so on-the-nose, that it lost all of its impact, which I think was a shame since like you said. Lots of names and great talent behind it. I didn't know Thomas Newman was involved though. I think I would have the EXACT same ranking as you Ryan on the animated shorts. The twist in Red, white and Blue really got to me though, so I disagree there. As a Scandinavian, I am always a supporter of classical dark Scandinavian comedy, so I hope Knight of Fortune wins even though I fully understand a Wes Anderson win. I agree with Yvette on The After. It was a bit too much. Interesting stat about english language barrier. I think I'll have to adjust my predictions. I can totally see Henry Sugar winning (which would be such a fun and quirky thing to do. Award Wes Anderson an Oscar in the short film category), with Red, White and Blue right behind. For me, live action short was not a category where anything blew me away. I did enjoy most of them. Last Repair Shop was very nice, and I agree with the points you make. Like you said, the structure of it was nice.

Animated short: My favorite: Pachyderme. My prediction: Just like Ryan, I straight up refuse to predict War is Over because it's so bad that I don't care if I got it wrong, I don't want to predict that even if on paper is the one that makes the most sense. I am going 95 Senses. Live Action short: My favorite: Henry Sugar. My prediction: Henry Sugar. I predict that the more international inclined Academy is not going to fall for Red, White and Blue, but RWB could very well still win. Documentary short: My favorite: Nai Nai and Wai Po. My prediction: The Last Repair Shop. On paper, ABCs of Book Banning makes the most sense, but The Last Repair Shop feels so cinematic while ABC feels like a PowerPoint presentation. Still very hard choice and I can see any of Repair Shop, ABCs and Nai Nai and Wai Po winning.

What I am going with so far: 1) Doc short The last repair shop, 2) live action short Red, White, and Blue 3) animated short War is over. Seen the live action and animated shorts in Detroit at the DIA Detroit institute of arts. The general consensus was red, white and blue for live action and war is over for animated. I think Henry Sugar will ultimately win the Oscar, but I am going with red, white and blue. The people that I sat around were mixed on Henry Sugar most are not fans of Wes Anderson. Loved your recap.👍🏻👍🏻

Great video. I really like both of your perspectives. One thing I disagree on is which one is the easiest to predict. I think it is animated short, War is Over is the only one that hits your criteria 1 and criteria 2. War is Over is like the winner last year which fit both of your criteria and was loathed on Letterboxd. Both War is Over and The Boy, the Fox, etc have major talent behind them (Not only does War have John & Yoko, it has a Thomas Newman score, Peter Jackson was involved as well as the producer of Titanic) Dear Basketball also had a low Letterboxd score but had Kobe and John Williams. Ryan, don’t let personal bias affect your prediction (that’s what gets me too sometimes). Your excellent stats show War is Over is definitely going to win.

I think Wes Anderson’s name recognition could work against him winning the Oscar. I can totally see voters feeling like this category is more for up and coming directors rather than established ones. I think it’s been a very long time since an established director won in these. I’m going with Red, White, and Blue

I watched 12/15. My personal favorites in each category are Invincible, The Last Repair Shop, and Letter to a Pig. I bet on Knight of Fortune at +1800 odds (meaning I get $18 from every dollar I bet if it wins) and after your video I bought some stakes in Red White and Blue too (it is at +1400 odds). This is not to encourage gambling, I only bet small amounts for fun. Personally I disliked Red White and Blue for the same reasons you mentioned. I loved The Last Repair Shop like you and I was surprised it is not the betting favorite.

I don't know if you see my other reply, it looks like it went to a spam filter. My first bet was $15 on Anthony Hopkins for best actor three years ago since I thought it was crazy he was still at +700 after the BAFTA win and I got back $105. Last year I bet $20 on a bunch of stuff and only got back $7. I know I need to keep the numbers low or it could become addictive.

Thanks for your review. Spoiler alert, for those who haven't seen the animated shorts, don't read this comment. After watching the animated films last evening, the story contents of these animations were so heavy and dark and real. The artists in each film did such an incredibly good job that I wished I could have discussed each animation with someone after each film before watching the next one. Pachyderm, the little girl being sexually abused by her grandfather, it's too close to home with a family friend. The artist really was creative and bringing these emotions out. War is Over, is the one that made me tear up at the end. Beautifully done and John Lennon and Yoko Ono's song is poetry within itself. 95 Senses, was particularly sad knowing that he was about to be executed and I'm sure the senses are highly elevated for prisoners in this situation. Letters to a Pig, I loved this one except towards the end, the story kind of threw me off hence I wish I would have had someone to speak with about it afterwards but you felt like you were really there in the room with the survivor. Our Uniform, was beautifully illustrated helping to bring alive how one feels about having to wear the certain type of clothing that restricts you from being seen. Especially love the part about trying to hide the hair but not hide the hair.

My favorites for animated were War is Over and Letter to a pig. Pachyderme was beautiful but a total mess story wise; easily my least favorite. For live action, I liked almost all of them. I found Invincible very touching, which might as well be my favorite. Red White and Blue also felt somewhat forced with the plot twist, but I still enjoyed it. However, I agree that the best one was Wes Anderson's Henry Sugar. My local theater didn't screen the short documentaries, unfortunately. I think the winners will be War is Over and Henry Sugar.

I still need to see War is Over and Our Uniform, but have managed to track down everything else online ever since they announced the 15 eligible titles in each category on their shortlists. Some of my favorites there that didn't make the cut for nominations: Animated - Boom, Once Upon a Studio, Pete Live Action: The Anne Frank Gift Shop, The One Note Man, Yellow Doc: Deciding Vote, Last Song from Kabul, Camp Courage Most of those can be found on KZread except Once Upon a Studio (Disney+), The Anne Frank Gift Shop (vimeo), Last Song from Kabul (Paramount+) and Camp Courage (Netflix) ANIMATED I agree with you on Ninety Five Senses deserving the win, but without seeing it I'm predicting War is Over (and I think a lot of voters will pick it without having seen it because of the title) LIVE ACTION Knight of Fortune was my favorite and I'm hoping it can be the rare foreign language to win and without a clear winner I'm leaving it as my prediction. I'm a huge fan of Wes Anderson but Poison was a much stronger short of the 4 Roald Dahl adaptations he did for Netflix, and I think the Academy will go for something shorter from a less established name which makes me think the race might be between Red White and Blue and The After because there is still some star appeal in both casts, but Invincible does have the benefit of being a true story so you can't count it out. And so in a wide open race like this I have to stick with what I feel is the best one - Knight of Fortune. DOC The logic I use for animated would go in favor of The ABCs of Book Banning for being the title that might get the most checkmarks from voters who haven't actually watched the nominees, but I think Last Repair Shop being based in Los Angeles where the vast majority of voters reside plus co-director Kris Bowers did the music scores for Color Purple and Origin while co-director Ben Proudfood has won here previously for The Queen of Basketball, but most important in its favor is the exposure after playing on ABC affilaited stations nationwide last Saturday which inspired a a $15 million capital campaign of support for its cause. Sorry for the mammoth comment, I really enjoy all your videos and follow you on letterboxd (you can find me by my first name). The conversational approach from both of you is great, and you are both as attractive as you are knowledgeable. Can't wait for your next video.

Your analysis is flawed. With the exception of Our Uniform and War is Over all the other films are available to watch online for free. Hence your Letterboxed score is mostly coming from animators who are more cynical. The majority of the academy isn’t that cynical. War is Over wins by a mile. You know the median age of the academy is 61. These folks were 8 years old when the Lennon Ono song debuted and it’s a perineal Christmas song so they heard almost every year thereafter. So nostalgia is on War is Overs side. I protest your ignorance and ability to actually pick correctly. The lady is way smarter than you…..lololol

My Pick For Best "Live Action Short" Is EASILY "Red, White, And Blue" It's A Brilliant Tale To Show The Horrors Of Converatism Which Is Why It's Called "Red, White, And Blue". Much Like Skin, It's A Middle Finger To Conservatives.Early On You Think You Know Where The Story Is Going, And Then That Third Act Just Delivers A GUT Punch That Shocks You To Your Core. If It Doesn't Make You Change Your Mind On The Topic Being Discussed, There's Something Revolting About You. Brittany Snow, Mo Collins, New Star Juliet Donenfeld Play Their Roles To ABSOLUTE PERFECTION Here's My Ranking 1) Red, White, And Blue 2) Knight Of Fortune 3) Invicible 4) The After 5) The Wonderful Story Of Henry Sugar 2) With KOF I Thought It's A Good Story Of Grief But Some Of The Humor Felt Missplaced Or Poorly Timed And It Takes Too Long To Figure Out What's Going On With The Other Guy. 3) Invicible Tackles Mental Health Well But Knowing From The Start How It Ends Did Take Away From Any Hope For Me. 4) The After Could Have Placed Higher With It's Take On Grief, But It Felt Like They Didn't Know How To End It And Went With Cliche Faces & Music To Convey What Should Have Spent More Time On..... Healing. It Felt Like The Cliche Ending Of An Episode Of Cold Case But If You Had Skipped Over How They Got To The Ending. Either They Didn't Know Where To Go With It Or The Budget Got Slashed Or They Just Ran Out Of Time. 5) I Saw This On Netflix So When It Was Playing Last, I Was Relieved Cause I Could Skip It This Time. TWSOHS Felt Like A Fancy Man On A Treadmill Rushing Through A Story Because He Didn't Know Of How To Properly Tell It.
