on barbie getting all three songs nominated: the academy set up a rule after dreamgirls and enchanted both did that, and yet still lost, that a movie couldn't have more than two songs nominated. they can submit multiple but a only maximum of two will be nominated regardless

I think the "song" category is already a fraud with all of those boring Bond songs winning for only appearing on the opening or closing credits. Song should be awarded according to it's relevance for the story. And I don't care about the film or the song but the fair winner with that rule in mind should be "Peaches"

Just a heads up, having just seen Maestro at my local film festival. I can wholeheartedely say I cannot see it being a big contender. The editing is very minimal, a lot of argument scenes have so little cuts and the camera so far from the actors that they undermine the performances a bit. Often times it seems Cooper is trying to copy the look of Spencer, but always moving the camera because it is “interesting”. Just like with the editing, not cutting away because it is “raw”. It’s not, it just overcomplicates it. Maybe it gets snubbed for trying to hard, just like how Belfast did.

Thoughts on International Feature: I think you have a plausible five, though I doubt The Monk and the Gun gets in. It's more sophisticated and funnier than Lunana: A Yak in the Classroom, but the prior film had a novelty that made it exciting to watch and a title that they wouldn't have been able to forget if they tried, which definitely helps when it comes time to vote. I'd put The Teachers' Lounge, Tótem, or 20 Days in Mariupol in the fifth slot. Tótem should definitely be higher than 11th. It's a lovely film and will make them cry. Putting it behind a Nuri Bilge Ceylan film in particular is kinda crazy. (This is the Academy we're talking about, not Cahiers du Cinema.) Fallen Leaves is too small and dry for them, I imagine. And Concrete Utopia has no chance in hell. I've seen at least 25 of the submissions and it may be the one I'd rank least likely to get nominated... definitely bottom 3.

I found it to be very safe and emotionally down-the-middle, bordering on preciousness towards its subject matter. I wouldn’t want you to take my word for it alone, but I think if you want another source, the Metacritic score is very telling imo. Compared to a film like Paterson (90 MC), which is working off a very similar concept, Perfect Days has a 72. And while I’m sure that score will fluctuate a bit (probably going up to ~76 or so, then finally falling to ~74), it won’t come close to Paterson- which is much closer to being high brow in the same way Wenders previous films were.

Ok, so, here’s a thought. I honestly would really be satisfied with The Creator winning visual effects, honestly I thought the movie was absolutely stunning on that end. However, and here me out, what about The Killer? The academy loves movies with subtle visual effects, for example, 1917, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, TeneT, The Batman (even though it was only nominated), etc. And, David Fincher is known for having a lottttt of visual effects in his filmography, albeit very subtle effects, which the Academy loves. The Killer I feel may get a nomination, or heck, maybe even a win. That’s just a theory though

Poor Things should win costume design. Barbie was basically recreation and I think costumes are better part of the storytelling process in Poor Things. Bella's outfits resembles her grwing so much that it is impossible not to notice it. You are underestimating Godzilla and Society of snow in Sound, VFX (I think both are in in this category) and maybe even production design.

My Current GoldDerby predictions (as of 10.11.23): *Best Cinematography:* 5. Matthew Libatique (Maestro) 4. Linus Sandgren (Saltburn) 3. Rodrigo Prieto (Killers of the Flower Moon) 2. Robbie Ryan (Poor Things) 1. Hoyt van Hoytema (Oppenheimer) The main other possible nominee I'm considering is Erik Messerschmidt (The Killer). *Best Costume Design:* 5. David Crossman and Jenty Yates (Napoleon) 4. Jacqueline West (Killers of the Flower Moon) 3. Francine Jamison-Tanchuck (The Color Purple) 2. Holly Waddington (Poor Things) 1. Jacqueline Durran (Barbie) Feeling pretty good about this 5, no particular contender I'm considering at this time. *Best Editing:* 5. Hilda Rasula (American Fiction) 4. Yorgos Mavropsaridis (Poor Things) 3. William Goldenberg (Air) 2. Thelma Schoomaker (Killers of the Flower Moon) 1. Jennifer Lame (Oppenheimer) Lame has this Oscar in the back pocket IMO. Others I'm considering for a nomination are Kevin Tent (The Holdovers), Kirk Baxter (The Killer) and to a lesser extent Nick Houy (Barbie). *Best Production Design:* 5. Aseroid City 4. Oppenheimer 3. Poor Things 2. Killers of the Flower Moon 1. Barbie Poor Things might give Barbie a run for its money in Costumes, but here Barbie is wlaking away with it. The only other movie I'm considering for a nomination is The Color Purple. *Best Animated Feature:* 5. Chicken Run: Dawn of the Chicken Nugget 4. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem 3. Nimona 2. The Boy and the Heron 1. Spiderman: Across the Spider Verse I'm really becoming more and more confident in Nimona, which I did believe in until recently. Also becoming more confident in Disney getting shut out this year, unless Wish turns out way better than expected. The Peasants is a possibility but I don't know if I feel it yet. *SAG Film Ensemble:* 5. Poor Things 4. Air 3. Barbie 2. Killers of the Flower Moon 1. Oppenheimer The Color Purple and American Fiction are both nipping at Poor Things' heels, ask me tommorow and I may very well have a different 5.

I just do not think Oppenheimer gets nominated. If it does, it easily wins by virtue of being in Best Picture. But, it has less VFX shots than Mank and Welcome to Chechnya, and not to mention both of those movies came out in a significantly worse year for VFX than 2023. I think Spider-Verse can still get nominated because it is bigger and more innovative in its vfx than even the first film. Not only that, but this is one of the few categories where not being in Best Picture doesn't matter. Nightmare Before Christmas, Kubo, and The Lion King remake never got close to Best Picture (and Kubo couldn't even win Animated Feature). Poor Things I think is not even worth entertaining because art house films and indies have proven time and time again that they are not visual effects movies. Everything Everywhere's VFX were just an extension of its editing. And a similar thing can be said for Poor Things, in that its VFX are just an extension of its art direction. I think Dial of Destiny can very well happen because the CGI Indy is pretty much flawless. The Marvels could maybe happen because it's basically a default tried and true vfx contender. In a weak year, the vfx could be solid enough to where it gets in.
