First review I've seen that actually talked about where the axles came from. Nice. I'm happy with the 4Runner I currently own, but a million miles from now when road salt has rotted it to death, it'll be nice to have another option in the market to consider. Granted it's a bit of a jump in price. This is quickly becoming my favorite review channel.

You can lift the back seat bottoms before lowering the seat backs.

Ryan - you can adjust the downhill assist speed using the cruise control "+" and "-" buttons. FYI for future reference.

Nicely done! I have watched several videos about the Grenadier and just learned more from yours than all the others combined!

ineos didn't choose to put the driver assistance tools on. Its an EU requirement from 7th July 2024. All new cars from the EU have to have it from then. And it cannot be disabled. Apparently, the US is looking at adopting similar but at a later date. Ineos are reported to have a software update coming specifically for the US to make it possible to disable and remember that .

Since it’s not required here, it should not have been included in models sold here. (Also note that the Defenders ADAS is much more pleasant sounding. Ineos picked an annoying click which was a bad choice.) In addition to making an annoying noise the Grenadier constantly misread street speeds. But that is not unique to the Grenadier. Vehicles just seem to have a hard time reading speed signs correctly in the United States. They all mess up.

A few mistakes. The Hill Decent Control adjusts up/down by the cruise control buttons, just the same as BMW's. Second the straight six in this Grenadier is the most reliable turbocharged 6 cylinder in Toyota's arsenal at the present. The new Land Cruiser may be the risky purchase.

Congratulation on this review! I just loved it, including the video and audio quality, impressive job! It brought me to my childhood memories in Europe where would virtually go anywhere we wanted with a Defender, seating in the back bench seats. I was considering buying a 4Runner TRD Pro as I felt it had the best off-road capabilities in the US market. Nevertheless, seeing the Ineos I am now doubting. I would really like to ask you whether you would be able to make an off road test video comparing the top 2-3 4x4 with the best off road capabilities. I believe it would be really interesting to know the Top of the Top in the US. It's a pity that most options are SUVs or trucks and that old school 4x4 are mostly gone in the market but I believe Ineos came to fill this gap of small off-road enthusiasts!

This is a really balanced review, Ryan. I don’t think I’ve seen your channel before. Just a couple of details (like speed adjustment on Downhill Assist), but pretty well researched and evaluated against the design objectives and intended buyer criteria. Way better than most of what I’ve seen, with the exception of hardcore specialists like Dirtbox or Ronny Dahl - and for a more general audience. Also really nice production quality. Very funny you did this on a Fieldmaster - you’ll have to test out the Trialmaster and take it up a notch on the course - that would be fun. I guess what a lot of people miss on the reviews is how to think about it, and based on that frame, to appropriately evaluate it. People are so used to the softer road-oriented SUV’s that have maybe been modified with a lift and bigger wheels, that they just don’t know how to process the Grenadier experience. But what would you do if you were driving a Unimog? It would make no sense to whine about return to center or turning radius. It’s a machine built for a specific purpose and buyer. These things aren’t quirks in design - they are the result of the engineering that HAS to be the way it is to achieve the design brief. So for those of us who want that (and by definition it’s not a large group), we’re actually kind of surprised it’s as smooth and “civilized” as it is - but that’s just the cherry on top for us. You did a nice job capturing that.

I’m already seeing these almost daily driving around the Dallas/Fort Worth area.

I know not apples to apples comparison, but curious your opinion on this compared to your Ranger Raptor, and the relative capabilities and "fun" factor. I was seriously considering a Grenadier, and the Raptor peaked my interest, still considering both. Loved this review and was seriously impressed at your driving without lockers and essentially street tires.

Oddly enough, I actually saw one of these on the road down in Riverside County in southern California a few weeks ago.

I test drove one back in march. kind of like it: the look, fit and finish. Steering takes sometime to get used to. will be nice if they offer lease option.

Ineos should give these to it's 1st-team players at Manchester United. Chevy gave them Camaros years ago, just a a sponsor... so Inoes could easily do the same as partial owners. But I had no idea Ineos was making cars, guess they've got thier hands in a lot of things. As always, great episode from DSTV!

I like what they have done and hopefully they will expand their dealership network and work out all the software bug's on there lockers , I pulling for them

I have mixed feelings about this car. I think it is very cool but does not quite fill the defender hole. I also don’t like that basic things like rpm and speed are mixed into a digital display. If my vehicle is taking on water and that display shorts then I lose basic functionality. I also don’t like the electric gear shifter. Also the bmw engine is questionable. While it is a cool offroader, it is more comparable to a gwagon than anything else. More of a status symbol that is unlikely to be taken off road at that price.

You pull the seat bottom up against the front seats then you pull down the back seat. This should have been obvious.

You can control HDC via the cruise control buttons in steering wheel. I believe you can go as slow as 1.5mph. Also, you can put in manual mode, 1 st gear. It locks in first and engine compression handles the speed.

@drivingsports the cruise control buttons are global so everything is KM. So if you want to slowdown 1mph, you have ro click the button 2 times when highway driving. I believe you need to hit button 4 times in off road mode.

A closer comparison would be against the GX 550 Overtrail- both 6 cylinders, ATRAC and KDSS v solid axle 5 link suspension and equivalent pricing.

The GX is not comparable at all. But nothing is. Watch Dirtbox Overland’s review and Ronny Dahl. The design and purpose of this car is not GX like at all. Nor is it super mod Rock crawling jeep. It’s an off-road tourer, period. Not a luxury vehicle that can go off-road.

High Pinion Double Cardan axles, a frame with the dimensions of a 1 ton truck, steering components beefier than most aftermarket JL parts, payload, towing capacity, 500 amp auxiliary electrics and on and on set the Grenadier off dramatically and everything is more costly to manufacture than luxury accessories.

Good review, and you hit the mark, it is not like anything else on the market. If viewers really want to know what the Grenadier is all about watch Ronny Dahl and Dirtbox Overland.

Does the hill descent control vary the speed if you use your cruise control up/down like other vehicles?

These are not cheap, but i appreciate that Ineos went for practicality and not full lux. With the state of car prices, this is good value, and somewhat attainable for normal people.

Dude, the seats do fold flat. You need to flip up the bottom first. Also, it is strange that you did not mention that it can be optioned with front and rear lockers.

He did mention the lockers, at 34:45 in the video. He didn’t go into detail but he talked about making it even more off-road capable by optioning it up with KO2’s and lockers. Agree he could have been more explicit, but it is there.

Great review, I agree with you, I wish all manufactures would incorporate the "Toot" feature. I hope you review the Ineos electric version when it arrives. I would go with Toyota due to Ineos' unique parts, dealer locations, and as anybody knows, NEVER buy the first edition of any vehicle. Plus this is a brand new manufacturer.

They just launched the Quartermaster (very expensive in US due to chicken tax), and announced a new customization line - “Arcane” - rumor is that Arcane will offer interior pass-through mods for roof-top tents. But some people are just having that done on aftermarket.

Just curious...won't the Recardo seats be severely damaged if water in the cabin rises high enough to submerge the seat bottoms/heating elements, even if the heaters are turned off?

Supposedly the cabin is sealed to disallow water entry for one hour at the 31” or whatever depth. Great if you can recover without opening the door.

The speed warning feature is due to the latest EU regulations. But it beats me why it's enabled on US-spec Grenadiers.

I’m surprised no one has picked you up on your pronunciation of “Fusilier”. 🙂 Also the HDC is adjustable, and there is a trip computer. 🙂 Great review though. ✅

You can get the trialmaster for the same price with lockers. The model he tested is the less off road version so no lockers and alloy 18

the Fieldmaster version he tested is supposed to be the more luxury orientated one so it comes with the smooth pack (heated seats and all that), the alternative version is the Trialmaster. it costs the same and comes standard with the rough pack which includes the front and rear lockers. alternatively you can opt for the even cheaper base model that is simply called the "Grenadier" and you can opt to add the front and rear lockers to that which should result in a cheaper build. and then of course if money isn't a factor you could also option a vehicle that has everything from the Fieldmaster and Trialmaster included (i.e the smooth and rough pack). but yeah i digress, to respond to your comment, you can get the vehicle with the lockers for 80 grand.

$76,500 gives you a base model with optioned lockers front and rear and all the necessary usable electrics, switching and winch wiring. Everything else is unnecessary luxury junk, heated seats, leather seats, non isolated dual battery, carpet and or carpeted floor mats Safari Windows that I’ve already covered, KO2 tires that I’ve already replaced, premium sound a tiny lame subwoofer………. To know what the Grenadier is all about watch Ronny Dahl and Dirtbox Owverland reviews.

@@SaltShack Not putting it down at all. But I like heated seats and automated cruise control for the ride home after a long day of wheeling. I like cameras and don't mind leather. I drive a fully loaded Bronco Wildtrak, 76k was the sticker. Lockers and 35 inch tires included.

@@EZapar Certainly, you just mentioned lockers and they are available on any Grenadier including ones quite a bit cheaper than $80,000. The cool thing is you can order what you want and nothing you don’t and no dealer mark-ups, none. You don’t have to buy a package every option is available individually or you can order a Trialmaster or a Fieldmaster and option them up from there and again no dealer mark-ups.

Hey Ryan, why don't you do some actual reseach? INEOS did not decide on ADAS... it is the law in Europe now. There is a software update to ba able to disable in the US if you do not have tow package.if you are going to test off road, then one would assume, you would actually use the trim level (with lockers) made for doing so and not the post version for around the village.but kudos to you over all for getting off road unlike 90% of reviews. My Grennie will aarive in Sept built up in custom configurator with steelies and lockers rear AND front.

This isn’t Europe. It should come with it off or at least the option to turn it off. We review as delivered. I did speak to the rep about it and he made a short cut on the test car to turn it off, but you have to do a button sequence every time the car starts. No mention of an update. (Not saying it doesn’t exist just the rep from Ineos didn’t mention it.)The Defender has the same ADAS feature, but it can be turned off permanently, which is how the Grenadier should have arrived. Side note on ADAS: every single car I’ve tested incorrectly identifies road speeds at some point. Not sure if it’s because the US signs aren’t as standard as other countries or what. But the Grenadier (and others) often think some of the streets near me are 25 when they’re 35, 55 when they’re 70, etc. Until cars can correctly and accurately identify street speeds in the USA that feature should not exist on any vehicle sold in the USA.

We have him chained in the front yard with a “Beware of Bryan” sign - right next to the “Warning - Protected by 2nd Amendment Security” sign. I JUST had my Grenadier at the dealer last week to have some stuff done and they didn’t offer a software update to permanently disable the speed alert. On the other hand, and this is SUPER IMPORTANT for the full Grenadier experience, this means every time I start it, I get to do a whole “pre-flight checklist” and push buttons and flip switches while playing “Danger Zone” on full blast. I am thinking of starting to wear aviators - maybe grow out a mullet???

I have seen them in real life, they are beautiful, id probably just go with a resto Defender for the price tag.

Friend does them (Defender restomods). Routinely charges 150-225, depending on the spec. Makes a GWagen look affordable.

You spend more time on the road to and from off-road destinations. I would want all the safety features.

It is surprising that they went with that old-school rear seat design, when turning one's SUV into a slepp-inside overlander is such a big trend. I guess they decided those who want to can just DIY a platform to level things out back there to sleep, and given the high ceiling height, that option's not a bad one. Still plenty of room to sit up back there, even with a platform install.

Over 90k cad for this and it’s missing a lot of standard features. Having the no speedo is pretty dumb. Taking that away and then adding a speed limiter noise is weird. Like you said for them not going with the Dana and going with the tractor one is not ideal for North Americans. Trying to get the parts from Europe not idea.

I get the not complaining about daily driver things because it isn't a daily driver, but it's also very expensive.

Too bad they didn’t have the option for the diesel like Australia does

This costs approx 20,000 in gas (5 bucks a gallon, 15mpg average) over 60,000 miles. This assumes gas prices dont keep going up. Too rich for my tastes

@@paulelledge8977 I think that after stuffing Grenadier with all gizmos required by European Union they didn't bother to remove any for other markets. By the way European speed limit beepers are required in new cars since 2022. Fancy name for this is Intelligent Speed Adaptation (ISA).

We can turn on or off the speed warning in the Australian version, so it must be a USA thing.

Land Cruiser has the better value, but the look of the Grenadier is so much better.

Depends on the LC - my Toyota dealer told me first edition plus dealer markup, lift and wheels (it only has 8.5” clearance) would run me $100k. So I got a bargain on my nicely spec’d Grenadier!

@@ElderStatesman-pi3lc I'd get a 1958 trim LC and do a lift, wheels, and steel front bumper w/winch. Realistically, I'd get a used one in 5-10 years, so no dealer markup. I currently have a 4Runner (got used) and prefer the look of the new LC over the new 4Runner, but if I could find a used Grenadier in 5-10 years, that would be very tempting! The Grenadier is a very impressive vehicle, it's awesome you got one!

@@sunroomstudios8487 smart - the markup on LC’s and the top OR trims on the Taco are mortal sin level right now. And I agree with you - personally, I prefer the older designs on both, and the LC probably looks a little better than the new 4Runner. I know there’s a lot of power in the new engine, but just super bummed they went with the 4 for the LC. That was kind of the nail in the coffin for me. The low clearance, the IFS, and then the 4 hybrid.

Looked at this, but it is pushing the price of my LC200 and can’t come close to it. As a strict off-roader it would be fine, but you are really paying $80,000 for a solid front axle 🤷‍♂️. Plus there is not an established support network. So, good vehicle, but no thanks.

The Trial Master version has three lockers, downhill control, a wading feature, under body armor, steel bumpers and an extra battery for winch,lights, radio, fridge, etc., The LC200 has a center locker. It’s an SUV. It’s a very nice SUV but it’s still an SUV. The Grenadier is a true off-roader. One glance underneath and you’ll see the difference. Not knocking the LC but they’re different vehicles.

The off road track was disappointing as i could do it with 4x2 SUV

Ineos all the way! Toyota is for the masses.

Why would anyone choose this over the other alternatives? Can't find one logical reason

Wait, a turbocharged straight 6 with ~280 HP? The N/A 3.6 L VVT DOHC V6 in my van puts out 283 HP. And it's been nothing but reliable with a nice smooth power delivery. I might be wrong here but I think you'd prefer for reliability and longevity, a normally aspirated engine. Just saying.

I didn't check, but it probably makes way more torque at a much lower RPM. The 4.0 V6 in my 4Runner. makes about the same HP, but the torque peak is at like 4,500 RPM which is pretty much unusable.

I will totally let them slide on not having Lane centering or having some insanely stupid amount of cup holders. In the backseat where the rare passengers can hold on to their capped water bottle. But I want a trip meter. I suspect it may be buried in the entertainment/information console. Which is annoying But an overpriced $85,000 "basic"vehicle that is specifically designed to do well going down harsh off-road trails had really better have a front and rear camera especially when little digital cameras don't actually cost much. On an off-road vehicle I really don't care about power seats. Especially a vehicle that is disconnecting the heated seats for fear of electrocution when water is entering the cabin. If that is a concern that's definitely a good reason to blow off electric seats😅 with this kind of vehicle I don't think you have to worry about having memory seats for constantly going back and forth between your wife driving it and you driving it. But me constantly having to get in and out of my off-road vehicle while driving it off road to see what is going on because they did not bother to put a literally inexpensive camera on the front and back of my SUV. Not good. I personally want cameras on my off-road vehicle so much more than heated seats 🙄 especially living in the desert 😅,😁 which would also be why I can't stand leather seats or even hotter, slipperior fake leather seats.🤬 So how fast are you cruising along on the highway at 2,000 rpm, 81 MPH? 😁 I am so tired of cruising the highway at "3,400" RPM knowing I'm never going to get good gas mileage. 😖 But for something that's supposed to be a basic solid off-road vehicle not a luxury ride, a basic solid vehicle is supposed to be put to use on rugged roads... it is priced way the heck too high. And I would not want to risk messing it up off-road about as much as I would want to risk messing up a Corvette, a Lexus or a higher-end Mercedes sedan. etc. And, a $85,000 vehicle that doesn't have lockers or actually every off-road feature you can have... Ridiculous. But a very cool off-roader for $30,000😅😉 It could use a tighter turning radius. Just watching you having to backup all the time was getting tiring😅😉

Boy, 15 mpg is pretty disappointing given the advancements in technology. My 80 series also has solid axles and full time 4wd. Its also shaped like a brick and may even have a worse cd and frontal area, it also has a much simper and more inefficient engine and half the gear ratios and it too was rated at 15 mpg. Before a lift and re-gear I was easily getting 15 mpg highway as well, (now I am down to 13-14). I also don't have to use premium fuel. 15 mpg on premium...oof. I can understand getting poor city mileage because that's just the physics, but how did they manage to also get such terrible highway economy? Ineos doesn't seem to public their final drive ratio, but they do publish their low range and we have the numbers for the ZF8HP. Doing the math (53.81 published crawl ratio / (2.5 x 4.71) = 4.57 final drive. Okay. 4.57 gears will do it. How strange they need such a short final. My math says that at 70 mph you are spinning that engine at nearly 2300 rpm and Utah legal speeds of 80 you are doing 2600 rpm. For perspective my 80 series with 33 inch tires and 4.56 gears is doing 2500 and 2800 rpm respectively....which is also really high.

15 on the highway? That's atrocious. I get 18 when towing a box trailer (2700 pounds) at 60. Sure, it's a diesel but man, 15 is low.

Why does the bmw shift knob have to be so ugly. It ruins the interior.

Right? That was my first reaction, that big beefy transfer case lever next to that little video game thing for the transmission. Looks terrible.

I heard the engineers hated it too, but making it something else would have raised the price a few thousand dollars.
