Just on manufacture making a Hybrid Petrol for "performance" Toyota did say that for the Tundra as a way to change peoples perception/ expectations that the "Hybrid" tech would be there to help with fuel consumption, even the F150 in the North American market with twin turbo petrol / hybrid tech is more geared towards reducing turbo lag off the line than outright fuel economy. GWM doing the same thing here but with a less well executed implementation

Great review - highlighting a few areas that others do not. At the price, expectations of a great performance on and off road are fair. The technology should obey the driver, not the other way round! The biggest concern is the inconsistent acceleration and braking, combined with the heavy fuel consumption. A driver needs to be able to predict what the car will do with confidence.

Great review Bret, I agree about ADAS, pain in the backside. Might I suggest you find a new "off road" track for a while as the locals are probably pissed that there service access road is being ripped apart and they either council or "locals" are trying to keep it from being cut up badly, I know out north west NSW that the farmers up on certain flood by-pass dirt roads hate it when they have to fix the roads after heavy rain which is why they corrugate then (make them bumpy as hell) to drive on.

Thanks mate. It's a state forest. These roads aren't access roads - a lot of them pretty much lead to nowhere. It is difficult to find a decent 4x4 track these days and I understand it's because there are a few that ruin it for everyone by dumping rubbish and cars, and destroying tracks etc. But I honestly don't think this loop would interrupt many people at all, hence why I use it. Hope that makes sense.

up north somewhere, ... seriously though I've been there nothing special to it, but it is fun but way to short. If you are Sydney based the two best "free" areas are Bangor pass (off Heathcoat Road) but I think these days they (who ever they are) get pissed if you enter access roads, the other one is west at Mt Victoria (Great Western Highway side) or from the other side on Mount Evans (Bells Pass) side. If you want fast free flowing dirt roads with corrugations just keep heading west to Mount Lambie / Medlow Bath (or is it heath I forget which one) and go into the state forests but beware there could be people with "R-Rated" licence permits (re: hunters), also the further west you go the more awesome tracks there are, also forget about Lighow Power lines, to many wanna be's with jacked up Hilux's there getting bogged and being pulled out by Patrols.

@@mraduldhakar8406 Yeah, I don’t usually let tyres down because I want to see how factory vehicles cope in factory trim. That’s the same with all cars that I test (except on sand). Of course it will go further, but it will go further with other mods/tweaks as well. This uses Giti tyres not Michelin. Overall, I disagree. This is not a “good”car. For $74,000 you could get a similar package from a more reputable brand, using a tried and tested powertrain that’s also more fuel efficient than this confused and heavy hybrid system. Judging by previous GWM models and used prices, the resale on this would be poor as well, in comparison to Ford Everest, Isuzu MU-X, Mitsubishi Pajero Sport, and Toyota Fortuner. All available from a similar price to this. This brand is getting there, for sure. To think how far it has come in just a few years, it is amazing. It has a great interior and technology too, as mentioned in the video.

Long term reliability is going to be questionable - big car with 2litre lump. It feels like things are placed at the limit. Would love to see how these vehicles pan out over a longer time horizon. well well well someone bought one (dealership demo with 1,800km) and within 3 days what happened? Engine crapped the bed and GWM are playing hardball on warranty. Owner was towing at well within limits and the engine up on great West Highway at just before Katoomba went kaboom bang bang and stopped, luckily they were in left lane when it happened, got out popped bonnet and yep the turbo shat it pants. Looks like the impala turbine split and went back into exhaust port and into the bores, enoscope shows serious damage to all 4 bores, pistons and valves. coolant in the bores which also suggest the head warped from the heat so probably blown head gasket. Owner called me up to take tow his caravan back to Sydney home while they waited for two truck to take it back to dealership. dealership has been good to deal with (gave the owner a Cannon ute loan vehicle, note: turbo diesel, as the tank 500 is turbo petrol / hybrid) ) but GWM playing hard ball, looks like they have no engines in their supply warehouse. The owner is pissed and will likely sell this piece of crap once GWM honour the warranty claim.
