Thanks for sharing about the upcoming project! Just thought I'd let you know I was inspired once again by a bunch of your songs. Stronger Than Your Pain. "Open up the gates of hell, feel the ego melt away." Wow, still struggling with brain, heart, joint inflammation, etc. from long COVID. Feeling the ego melt away. Believing that at the end of the process, what remains will be much stronger than my pain. Have had to let go of the illusion of control, turn from bitterness, and embrace love. "If we make it through the night, we will ride into the Light." Wishing you all the best!

Wow, this episode was deep. "Don't Die!" is a great message, maybe the most important message you can give out.

Good ear hearing the Loss influence. We’re always chasing the spirit of Despond even if the music isn’t completely similar.

I like the Oldest Sea album too, and agree that it compares nicely with SubRosa (and subsequent projects The Otolith and The Keening), it least for atmosphere if not the particular sound. Its fun to imagine what your new project will sound like, looking forward to hearing it. Good luck with the labels! Just like Black Metal, it's totally legit of course to not be a fan of Stoner/Desert/Fuzz in general. Regarding your preference for Kyuss, I'm sure there's plenty who dismiss most of the metal subgenres because no one was better than Black Sabbath. Personally, that's what lead me to desert rock -- I was craving more Sabbath-inspired sounds and guitar tones, and the first wave of doom pioneers (Pentagram, Saint Vitus, Trouble, Pagan Altar, Witchfinder General) weren't quite scratching the itch I had for particular fuzz tones. I found what I was looking for in Colour Haze from Germany. Over the course of their first six albums, Stefan Koglek evolved his sound, incorporating Sabbath and Kyuss influences as well as the fluid tones of Hendrix and Robin Trower into his own thing by Los Sounds de Krauts (2003). That and Colour Haze (2004), Tempel (2006) and All (2008) are great places to start. Along with Kyuss, Monster Magnet and Fu Manchu, I'd include Sleep as one of the originators of that scene, and Dopesmoker edges out the Kyuss albums as my fave. Melvins are never just one thing, but I'd say they're a big influence too, as well as Flipper on the drone side. Here's a cool album from the UK that's not as widely known: Acrimony - Tumuli Shroomaroom (Leaf Hound, 1996) The scene seemed to really take off around 2004-05, with the brief crossover popularity of Sweden's Dungen, lead by Gustav Ejstes and genius Reine Fiske, and Witchcraft, who formed initially to contribute songs to Pentagram and Blue Cheer tribute albums. From Witchcraft’s Magnus Pelander's previous band Norssken came Graveyard, who leaned more toward their own brand of classic rock, which I love. Truckfighters also became a huge favorite, particularly their high energy live shows. On the sludge side, I agree that Church of Misery are the masters of what they do. However on the cosmic space/doom/sludge side, my alltime fave is Italy's Ufomammut. Idolum (2008) and Snailking (2004) are good entrypoints, and my favorite is Eve (2010).

Good stuff, Nate. Pretty sure you're my favorite KZreadr (not to mention being my favorite musician since, I don't know, since my early 20s some 20 years ago). You said from the beginning that you don't plan the content, you just go off the cuff and try to be real, and it comes off that way. Like hangin' out with a kindred spirit. Appreciate it. Can't wait till the next project. Best of luck with the record deal! (Still think you should go completely independent, but what do I know...)
