2024 F1 AUSTRALIAN GP RACE analysis by Peter Windsor

Спорт

Max Verstappen retired his Red Bull early in Melbourne when a right rear brake assembly exploded...and victory went to Ferrari's Carlos Sainz, the driver who will be replaced in 2025 by Lewis Hamilton. Thanks to his excellent tyre management in the opening stint, Sainz was able to run with a significant new-tyre advantage as the race unfolded, enabling him to beat his Ferrari team-mate, Charles Leclerc, with relative ease. Ferrari's one-two was mirrored by a three-four finish for McLaren-Mercedes; and Sergio Perez was an uninspired fifth in the other Red Bull, ahead of the two Aston Martins, an excellent Yuki Tsunoda (Visa RB) and the two, equally-impressive, Haas-Ferraris.
Note: after this video was posted, Fernando Alonso was penalised for causing Mercedes' George Russell to crash heavily on the penultimate lap at Turn 6. Telemetry showed that, with Russell only half a second behind him, Alonso lifted the throttle more than 100m earlier than he ever had before and then downshifted before going up a gear and accelerating again. Russell, in perhaps the understatement of the year, described the moves as "erratic". For his part, Alonso explained that he was trying a different approach to the corner - a slower entry for a faster exit. Bearing in mind that no racing driver should play with entry speeds when another car is right behind, Alonso's 20sec penalty dropped him to P8 (but conveniently elevated Stroll to P6). It can also definitely be said to be lenient. It should be remembered that a similar incident, involving Jacques Villeneuve and Ralf Schumacher, resulted in the death of a track marshal at Albert Park in 2001.

the only thing sainz did well was to outqualify Charles. The race was won for him by team orders. He did nothing special in the race. Being in front, clean air, with Charles ordered not to attack. Even sergeant pepper would have won that race !

Sorry Peter, you’re wrong about Lando and/or Oscar having a single regret about their contracts at Mclaren. Who I’m their right mind wouldn’t prefer a Mclaren over a Mercedes, last season even, this year 100% definitely, isn’t comparable. Carlos I think has zero compassion for Charles now, Ferrari too. I don’t blame him, he’s been the most dedicated and loyal employee @ Ferrari played the team game when required and been 1 of only 5 to win a race since Bahrain 🇧🇭 2022 If we include the sprints, and why not, 6 race winners Charles, Max, Sergio, George, Carlos and Oscar in Qatar 🇶🇦

Sainz needs a seat next year and has proven over many years he can be a team player. The only reason Sainz is throwing down the gauntlet with his teammate this year is because the team is firing him.

Being a Leclerc fan I am usually disappointed when he doesn’t win, especially against his teammate but Carlos just outperformed him this weekend. Carlos has yet to show a full season without any mistakes. As for Lec, he has a bad habit of starting the season shaky. just look last year... Carlos just has the experience advantage over Lec, and driving for a lot of teams actually helps a lot.. I still think Lec is still a better driver and still has some potential to unlock, and Sainz is pretty much at his peak it seems.

@@BuuGz86 "Carlos has yet to show a full season without any mistakes" Has Charles? I think on average Carlos is more consistent (apart from his crashes at the start of 2022) and Charles and George are more mistake prone IMO. Red Bull should try to sign Carlos for 2025 ASAP before Mercedes does IMO, although Russell will be off contract for 2026, so that's another option for Red Bull. Unfortunately RBR already missed the boat on Piastri and allowed McLaren to extend Piastri's contract.

Three things: Fernando slows down Michael at Imola 2005 to exit better in the corners. Michael, who knew he would lose downforce, did not make mistakes because of it. Fernando is a clean racer like few others. George chasing Lando with DRS in Singapore crashes on the penultimate lap. This mistake is undoubtedly similar. And three. Hamilton at Silverstone not only did something potentially dangerous but also caused it. And the penalty was laughable. The Formula Penalty has returned. And Finally cheers 🎉 for Carlos Sainz. But it was an alright race nevertheless and i am very happy for Sainz, and also Yuki especially now that Alonso got bumped back. I am on the fence about Alonso's penalty, i like that he's wily, but maybe it was a bit much to slow down in the 'chicane' section, but George also needs to lock-in less into his competitors, because it is not the first time that he crashed while having this tunnelvision (Singapore being the other one).
