Dr. Cowen, it is good to see you back. I just wanted to say I recently started working in ocean climatology as a computer scientist, at least in some part, inspired by you. I live on the Gulf Coast and your steadfast information helped me understand and grow in a way to hopefully help others the way you do when talking about the weather and the climate. Thank you.

Well Levi, here we are at the start of another Atlantic hurricane season! Don't know what we'd do without your awesome videos to help us out in understanding everything in YOUR way‼️😊 My husband & I have lived in Rockledge, FL in Brevard County since 1989 and our son went to FSU. He found out about you when you were completing your work to get your MS, then your PhD and I've been a loyal fan since you had your TT website only!! Thanks for educating us and all your followers 😘 I've referred several hundred people to you since you're the BEST ❤️🌀

That's the truth. Living on the coast, there's always the chance of a hit. We've been lucky to dodge a number of bad storms for years now, but one day, a bad storm will hit again. It's only a matter of time. Better to be prepared even if one doesn't this go around.

Indeed. Don't hire unlicensed contractors, build on the dunes near the high tide line, or a few feet above a lake...you'll survive. Pay off your mortgage early and cancel insurance unless you're in the above three categories. Modern building codes and an inland home site mean hurricanes are only a nuisance.

Well. I've been dreading your return this year in particular Dr. Cowen. Not because you don't have my single favorite channel on youtube. You do, you absolute stud. Just cuz this year scares the hell outa me. Not a great year to live on a sailboat, in the VI, with no working engine, and no cash for insurance, haha.

This year has a volcanic anomaly which the models are not programmed to see. Ruang volcano pumped millions of pounds of sulphur dioxide into the stratosphere at roughly 3° N as well as 3° S. The northern stratospheric plume of gases already circled the equator while the southern portion moved east and either scattered or sank. The belt slightly north of the equator will continue stretching and diluting, yet remain for years. By way of three distinct major eruptions, Ruang pumped as much SO2 into the stratosphere as Mount St Helens. But not as much as Pinatubo. Both of those eruptions led to measurable decreases in surface temperatures. Mt St Helens led to frigid winters in the Northern Hemisphere for much of the 1980s. Multiple years with temps dropping into the teens in Florida and the demise of the citrus and ornamental agriculture of Central Florida. Likely too late to change ocean temps this year, but this will likely be a flash in the pan as solar radiation will be decreased for several years.

I've been watching since Matthew and always look forward to your updates, insight and educational videos. Weather isn't based on emotion, but I have a feeling this season might be a brutal one. Heat index 107° in May, odd long thunderstorms, extreme humidity from on and off rain, and today hail on the treasure coast in FL. Thank you for your dedication to keeping us updated. Many hopes we steer clear from a big one.

Depends on where you live. Weather has ben absolutely beautiful in Central Florida. I was born here in the 70s and this is much cooler than normal for May. Wonderful May thus far. If you think this is hot, you ain't seen nothing yet.

Born and raised in South Florida in the Ft. Lauderdale area. I was a kid when Andrew hit so I've seen quite a bit here, but am somewhat new to the treasure coast which would still be considered South Florida, I'm just more East and closer to the water. Nothing new under the sun for us, but this is not typical temps in May every year, I'm not a genius, but the more South you are, the hotter it is 😅. Growing up we had no AC in the house, I know heat. Rest assured you aren't deterring a snowbird here.

@@christinelisheva9695 Love from DeLand. There's a saying which has kept me balanced in weather terms. "This is the weirdest weather since the last time we had weird weather." People have incredibly short memories when it comes to weather. Few, if anyone, remembers the firestorms of 1989 and 1998. So dry and hot lakes went dry and the fires blotted out the sun for over a month. People forget Andrew was the only major storm to hit Florida since 1948. They don't see patterns. They only see the anomaly and then forget every year between. *There was Donna in the 60s but that was a rain event. We'll get boring again and the Carolinas will return to being hurricane central as they were for 50 years. Everything operates in cycles. Florida will always be hot, even though it's currently beautiful here in DeLand.

It's been an odd year here in the Palm Beaches. A very rainy winter. And a very dry and hot "spring". I can walk across the bottom of the canal next to my house right now, and not get my feet wet. I know this is a facts and evidence based science channel, but I can't stop reading the tea leaves and having a general sense of foreboding about this season.
