both are gm diesels. the dodge is from a canceled gm lineup they bought when gm thought better of offering the Fiat Coup. picked up the ball and ran with it for the euro market. Detroit Diesel was a falling CO. they had to reach out for help to save it , Duromax was merely a step in the right direction not to mention a work in progress the whole time in production it still lacks in fuel system recirculation heat, and clogging, problems only in the last sales year did they truly address it. my family owns three of them. the more they age the longer they spend in repair. not a sound platform in my opinion not without heavy modification that is retro enough that the EPA won't like it. wouldn't you know all said mods will improve mileage and power performance meaning the EPA amounts to a choke point and a dumb-ass babysitter that cares to much about stupid shit.

I had the ecodiesel for almost 9 years. $23,000 in warranty claims. When the warranty was running out it was sold. My summary of ownership; “ ecodiesel, comfortable to drive , uncomfortable to own”

Yep I have had my 2015 Grand Cherokee EcoDiesel for over 3 years and it has spent lots of time in the shop….when the AEM Warranty is up myJeep will be gone

A lot of those issues have been fixed for the 3rd Gens(2020-2023). I’ve got a 21 Limited Eco with almost 30K miles on it. It has been a solid and flawless truck so far.

I’ve been lucky I guess. Started with a new 2015 Laramie Ecodiesel, sold it with a bit under 90,000 kms. No engine or fuel issues, rear axle replaced under warranty. Went to a 2018 2500 with the Cummins, then bought a new 2019 Classic SLT Ecodiesel in 2020. I’m up to almost 130,000 kms trouble free on this one. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Own a '23 ecodiesel Lonestat 4x4. Avg 33.2 hwy over 60 miles yesterday with cruise set at 70. Hwy avg has been 29.5-33.2. Don't drive much city but avg about 25 in city.

I'm planning to buy the Chevy silverado duramax 3.0. I took one out for a test drive and was very impressed. Videos like this help with my decision. I do a lot of research before I by anything.

Just picked up my 23 limited elite ecodiesel Wow gorgeous interior, I did get the 3.92 axel ratio turbo lag still there but I feel like it has a bit more throttle response. Overall satisfied especially with the suspension & already hitting 30mpg. Can't go wrong with either one just comes down to personal preferences

i want one but the fact they are deleting the Diesel has me very concerned.

I automatically deduct one point for people who come to a stop, and Then crank the wheel stop to stop Before rolling forward.. Crank the wheel in the opposite direction you're backing even Before you stop, so you're already heading where you want to turn as you start your roll forward. You'll have to figure out the benefits . . . ☆

We had a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited 4x4 Ecodiesel. Loved the engine and eight speed transmission, but according to the service department at the dealer, the Ecodiesel is the most expensive engine to maintain by far, even more so than the Cummins engines in the Ram 2500 or 3500 trucks. It was very expensive to maintain.

Samething here. I'm in the look for a diesel-powered too. Love the interior of the ram and the exterior of the chevrolet. I came from and ecodiesel upgraded for a hemi. But it sucks. I know all the gas station now.

Good review Ben I like both I would pick ram but both are solid the duramax is slightly better but I like the overall package of ram

I just bought a 2023 LT Trail Boss with the 3.0. 3.23 gears and 18" wheels. I get 25.5 MPG on the interstate which is impressive given the lift and off road tires.

from what i heard for Ecodiesels seems the G3 (2020 n later) is the most stable one?

Which one had a quieter interior?

The two trucks have the same problems with the diesel pump factory defect

Biased because I have a 23 Silverado LZ0 and that said I have not driven a Ram EcoDiesel. The cost of the diesel in Canada was about $750 over a 5.3 but comes with a block heater as standard. Having owned two 5.3 trucks the difference in the two powertrains is like night and day. The Duramax has phenominol torque or at least it feels like it over my old 5.3. The transmission shifts are very smooth and yes on hard throttles you can hear the diesel but it's not obtrusive, actually prefer the diesel sound. The fuel economy is great for a full size truck usually avg 9.0lt/100 kms, don't ask what that converts to in mpg probably around 31 or 32. My electronic floor shift is a lot better than the Ram's dial shift, just my opinion.

26.25 MPG on your conversion from 9lt/100km. Formula is 9/3.78=2.381 gallons and 100/1.6= 62.5 miles. 62.5miles/2.381 gallons= 26.25 MPG

I can pay 10 to 20k below mrsp for a an unsold ram ecodiesel tbh. Its petty difficult to get that on the gm

I have an appointment tomorrow for a ram Iam gone buy a 4WD but I came to double check and then I saw a comment about a Colorado and remind me how bad chevys 4WD are but idk about rams

Im currently in the market for a new truck coming off a 07 Ram Laramie 5.7 that has served me well over the years, I like both new trucks in a Ram Limited and Sierra Denali trim, but in todays market and builds I had to do some extensive research as things have changed enormously from the last time I bought the Ram, I love Ram's but I had to drop the faithfulness towards it for many reasons and the top being, Im going to drop a ton of money, Ecodiesel has had its issues and it wasn't till this year Ram decided to do recalls on the engine, the gen 3 Ill pass on as there is no real data even though 85% of the engine has changed, Ram's on going issue with air ride is huge and I know a couple of people with them, a 2021 and 2022, they both have issues, just do a search on the subject, Ram has a ton of issues and I never did really like GM trucks till now after doing research as I want a baby diesel, diesel is not for everyone and I know how to care for them and I am willing to do the extra work and services on them, I have decided in the LZ0 Duramax in a Sierra Denali, (I like my comfort), I didn't like the grill but after looking at it in person, I grew to like it, the Ram's is still nicer, but Im after a diesel drivetrain period, Ive driven both gen 3 ecodiesel 3:21 rear and new LZ0 Duramax 3:23 rear, the Duramax LZ0 had way more pull, you needed more road to do a proper test on this due to the rear gears as I did, if I were to go gas, I would most likely go Ram Limited with 5.7 and coil spring suspension, but I want a diesel for what Im going to be doing, so it would be a LZ0 Duramax in a Denali trim, maybe even an Ultimate, another thing I like about the GM truck is the doors are aluminum, not just for weight saving but they wont rust as Im in the snow belt, rustproofing is a must on anything where I live, trucks can be nasty for rust if not cared for, Ram has a ton of issues, GM not so much, as a matter of fact much less, I dont like the Duramax placement of oil belt and timing gears and chain, but to me thats not a deal breaker.

Yeap same hard decision for me to make. I want to get a new diesel truck 1500, i dont like chevy but thank God for gmc is waaay better interior than chavy ram or ford and yes i like the luxury;) when it comes to engine issues i have heard duramax is better reliable, but if you like ram so much why don’t you go with 2500 and cummins diesel its the bedt diesel in market ?

Why are these trucks starting to look like the midsize trucks? I went out to get a new one. I kind of felt like I was back in my 1992 Dakota I a 2014 eco-diesel that’s a full-size truck for half ton

It’s a shame Ford doesn’t offer the diesel lion engine anymore.

I didn’t understand why they dropped it either. Ford has a ton of engine options I almost think they wanted ppl to buy the powerboost or lightning and the diesel many have competed with fords own options .

Wasn’t there an issue with the timing belt? The fact that it was a belt to begin with vs a chain, and then was it not at the back of the engine requiring several hours of labour to change it out?

Something here. I'm in the look for a diese too. Love the interior of the ram and the exterior of the chevrolet. I came from and ecodiesel upgraded for a hemi. But it sucks. I know all the gas station now.

And never mind that the individual’s or business’s plan could charge higher rates or outright cancelled.

Diesel fuel just dropped to a LOW $4.99 a gallon in East KY. An everyday diesel just doesn't make sense. Good review.

The 3.0 Dmax makes more torque than any other engine option in regular half-tons. Engines like the 6.2 and 3.5 EB get close, but they require premium fuel which is also very expensive. The 3.0 Dmax routinely gets 28 to 30 mpg highway on top of it. You'll get 30% worse fuel economy with the 6.2 on top of requiring premium.

Suing insurance companies just leads to higher rates for ALL of us. You're not helping us by advertising like this

Naming something Eco anything makes me doubt it.

I’m with the Ram

Reviews like this always parrot the "Max towing capacity is 13000lbs" nonsense without admitting that the one you buy could be as low as "8000 lbs" in the trim that you buy. You need to order the max towing package and get a non crew cab 2wd to get the high towing capacity. Typical 4wd crew cabs are around 9000 lbs.

Billions upon billions. Insurance Companies have it like that?

The duramax is far better and durable as far as reliability. There's a good reason why Ram discontinued their eco diesel in the half tons.

For sure the GMC Sierra Dmax. 😂

I have owned diesels but in todays market there is no reason to buy one unless you are towing. Diesel's higher price ( over a buck a gallon more) negates the better fuel economy and diesels cost a lot more to service. I love my 21 hemi Laramie.

If you're spending most time on the highway, I think that 20% extra for diesel is going to be made up by the mileage advantages.

I did the math it would cost me 2 tanks in my 21 Ram 1500 with hemi non etorque to get the fuel economy that the new LZO duramax gets for me it’s worth getting it. I get on average 13-15 mpg year around. I would have got the eco diesel if it was on the lot when I got my truck. Wish I would have ordered a truck instead

@Arctic Picks I just lemon lawed my 22 ram ecodiesel had nothing but problems and chryslers legal team FCA is absolutely garbage to deal with.. I spent 65k on a brand new truck and then when asked for a rental they approved me for 40$ a day 😂🤣😂🤣 I just got my 23 trail boss and there are some things inside that are better and somethings I wish the chevy had that my ram had but the power is night and day difference

I like the Ram more but like the Duramax over the Eco Diesel any day...there's a reason why Ram is getting rid of that engine.

Look at the front end difference. The Chevy looks old and out of date, whereas the Ram looks nice and modern!!

Slight correction: The Ram actually has more torque. Duramax more HP.

No the duramax shown here has more horsepower and torque than the ecodiesel. The 1st gen duramax had more horsepower but less torque than the ecodiesel.

The Duramax makes 495 lb ft and 305 HP. The Ecodiesel makes 480 lb ft and 260 HP. The Ecodiesel is also discontinued. Too many years of terrible reliability really hurt the engine's reputation.

They should put the 6.6 Duramax in the 1500

Have you heard about the GM APPTOVED use of HIGH OIL CONSUMPTION in the LMO ? What's going on, GM? Can't you build an engine that doesn't use oil?

The oil consumption issue was the LM2 and there is a TSB for it, as well as a redesigned part that fixes the issue. It consumes oil due to a bad internal weld in the valve cover that allows oil to leak into a ventilation tube. The oil would get sucked into the intake and get burned. That caused a host of other issues with fouled glow plugs and plugged DPF's/EGR. GM states that the LZ0 will burn some oil during break-in (normal for all engines) but oil consumption will drop to normal levels as the engine is done breaking in.

I have had the 3.0 lm2 for several months now and no issues where I fill up. I am mindful of where I fill up, I stay away from those smaller private stations and use the more trusted brand like Husky, Mobil, Esso, Petro Canada. Also I use an additive like Lucas diesel fuel treatment that helps improve the quality of the fuel.

I have the 22 suburban lm2 and all I pump is shell with hotshot secret EDT additive in every fill up since new. No issues thus far. Stay away from bio diesel (B20) pumped 1 time and it was super sluggish and clunky. Also I change my own oil. I use amsoil with the dexos D (added 2+ mpg) and change my fuel filter every time I change the oil. Overkill but it’ll prevent issues down the road
