2023 Nissan Z redesign - Minor changes, MASSIVE impact!

2023 Nissan Z redesign - Minor changes, MASSIVE impact
The new Z will be priced about the same as the 350Z in 2003 and it will share the same wheelbase as the 2020 370Z.
It now has 400 hp and 350 pound-feet of torque from its twin-turbo 3.0-liter V-6 and guess what, it comes in with a six speed.
No 0-60mph numbers yet but you can be sure it will be as quick or even quicker than its main rival the Toyota Supra which does it in 3.7s and that’s even with the base Sport trim.
When the 2023 Nissan Z goes on sale next spring you’ll be able to choose between two trim levels - the Z Sport and the Z Performance.
They both have the same powertrain and both will get the full 12.3-inch customizable instrument display however the Z Performance is enhanced and upgraded where it matters - for example you get a stiffer suspension, a limited-slip differential, larger brakes and launch control.
You also get upgraded 19” wheels with the Performance Spec and 275mm wide rear tires for a more planted look. Something we’re going to talk more about in just a minute.
There is a third trim level that will only be built in 240 units and that is the Proto Spec. As the name suggests this will be a Z Performance with the same colors that we saw on the Z Proto concept car-yellow paint, black roof, bronze wheels, and yellow brake calipers.
The reason I’m not really counting it as a full trim level is that I’m sure these will all be sold out the first day the 2023 Nissan Z goes on sale.

I thought the Z Proto couldn't look any better, and I still don't know, I think I like it both ways. Although I appreciate the effort to make the front lighter looking, but I can't avoid looking at it like an Aston Martin, so it could have been a little different, maybe just leave it black but change the width of the bottom or something

I think since it's curved with the front bumper it will give it some depth irl, instead of it looking like a 2d rectangle stuck on the front. Like almost all cars, I think that it will look better and more natural irl.

To be honest the only part I really like about this redesign is the rear bumper going more down from the side view. With the original design the rear end kinda disappears a bit. What I really don't like are the changes between front intake and front wheel house. Especially the "triangle" between wheelhouse headlight and the added inlets. It just does not blend into the rest of the car's design and it also makes it look too wide in the front. If the front wasn't extended you could also get rid of the inlets. They just pop out too much the way they are now. The original 'character lines' or what they're called work a lot better in my opinion. I see that with the extended front there maybe was too big of a gap to be left, but I think instead of adding theses inlets the front should have been extended less - maybe by half than what you did here. The front intake redesign however is a thing I would like to see without the other changes made to the front. I feel like it could be better than the original design. The other changes just make the car look different in my opinion. Not better not worse, just different. In the end it now feels less 'complete' to me (which makes sense considering it's the work of a few hours instead of a full design process). But that's mostly due to the new front bumper design.

  • @Viking8888

How would you push these designs into the future, if you had to pitch those same. Vehicles for a movie today?

I usually agree with Sketch Monkey redesigns, but I think the yellow piece in the grill breaks apart what the large intake says about the car being performance-oriented. Extending the front/rear also doesn't take a nod to the previous 350z and 370z which were typically stumpy looking cars.. I don't know, I think giving the bonnet more of a sharp nose/giving the large intake more of an aggressive angle would've been enough

The original 240Z was a design masterpiece but with each new generation it got bigger and fatter, more of a grand tourer than a sports car. This 2022 Z is a major reskin with a carried over platform. Nissan has nailed the design, as a combination of modernism and retro it looks great and contemporary without being overdone - the Toyota Supra has some serious competition.

I am curious if something like the aluminum trim piece that goes along the roofline could be used to split the grille into two pieces instead of a body color piece. This would kind of mimic the chrome bumper of the 240z in a more modern way. I also really don't like the triangle thing below the headlight and I don't think turning it into a real vent fixes the issue. Perhaps the trim piece could be extended beyond the grille and resolved into something smoother than a triangle.

I really like the back end. I'm not sure about the back window being smaller, I guess they both look good. I don't like the front though. Now I like the idea of the front being a little longer, but by not changing the wheelbase it looks even more front-heavy. I really don't know how this would be from an engineer's standpoint, but visually it would look better with just a little longer wheelbase (but keeping the part after the wheels the same).

The bold open grill looked better imo. But I get what you tried to achieve breaking up the grill. This solution makes the car look a lot more like a 2000’s car. Not a 2021 car. I know its counter intuitive, but I wonder how a slim chrome strip crossing the grill with a bit of overlap on the sides would’ve looked. (It could still be blacked out on more high end versions), but it would fit with the chrome strip in the roof and it would mimic the classic bumper

I would have gone with a chrome strip through the grill to more closely call back to the old bumper. Being a body-color strip feels a bit heavy.

My only Issue is with the bar in the grill, maybe if it was like the lancer evo being black and separated from the body

I would have liked to have seen a light bar trimmed in ss going through the center of the grill ending in daytime running lights on the body , complimenting the original. atm the grill reminds me of Beldar in the dentist scene...lol.

I like the changes to the rear end and the hood being longer. However the piece on the grill is a little too low and bulky. The 240z’s front bumper looks great because it’s right in the middle and is a bit slimmer. Other than the front piece these are in my opinion great changes.

Dude, you made it look better. However, you should not have reduced the size of that triangular rear window. That's because on the 370Z, it is difficult to see out of its small triangular rear window. This is probably the reason they made it bigger on the 400Z. And thanks for putting a vent on the side of the Bumper, because I don't know what that indentation was supposed to be. It was also good that you divided the Grille as well, but I would have preferred a Chrome piece over body color. The front of the 400Z just looks incomplete without your modifications. Among other things, I like the fact that you use strong lines, it give the Car more character. There is a notorious practice by Car designers of using what I call shy lines (semi-invisible lines), which can only be seen when the Sun is at a certain angle, and that's morning or evening. This makes the Car look plain during the long hours when people see them the most, which are day & night. I told an old Car designer friend of mine that when Car designers do this, it is just to impress other Car designers, not the public that actually buy the vehicles. If the public don't notice a design feature, then it is as if it's not there at all.
