This is a Motormouth couple car review of the new Mazda CX-50 Meridian trim. Mazda promotes the CX-50 as an outdoor crossover that not only takes you comfortably into the outdoors and off-road, but it doesn’t sacrifice on-road driving dynamics.
The Mazda CX-50 is based on the same basic platform as the Mazda3 and CX-30 which extends to the suspension design with McPherson struts up front and a torsion beam at the rear.
It comes standard with Mi-Drive control with sport and offroad modes, the turbo model also has a tow mode and paddle shifters.
The Mazda CX-50 Meridian trim has distinctive hood graphics, headlight protection, 18” wheels and all-terrain tires and it only comes with one interior colour option, Terracotta. There are two engine options, the Meridian model has a 2.5L turbocharged 4-cylinder with a 6-speed automatic transmission. With premium fuel 256 horsepower and 320 lb-ft of torque. If you use regular fuel, you’ll get a little less power 227 horsepower & 310 lb-ft of torque. The base engine is a 2.5L 4-cylinder with 187 horsepower and 186 lb-ft of torque. Standard AWD.
The CX-50 offers 8.3”- 8.6” of ground clearance depending on the trim you choose and come standard with plenty of features in Canada. In the US, there is a more stripped-down base model with a lot less features but a trim for every budget.
Fuel economy, the non-turbo engine gets 9.7L/100km, 24 MPG city and 7.9L/100 km 30 MPG highway. The turbo 10.4L/100km, 23 MPG city and 8.1L/100km, 29 MPG highway.
The Mazda CX-50 non turbo model can tow 2,000 pounds and the turbo 3500 pounds.
In Canada, the Mazda CX050 starts at $38,250 CAD, GT $43,200 CAD, GT Turbo $45,700 CAD, Meridian $48,200 CAD.
In the US, 2.5 S $27,550 USD, S Select $28,950 USD, Preferred $30,250 USD, Preferred Plus $32,690 USD, Premium $35,150 USD, Premium Plus $37,150 USD, Turbo $37,150 USD, Meridian $39,950 USD, Turbo Premium $40,300 USD, Turbo Premium Plus $42,300 USD.
The Mazda CX-50 Meridian Edition in Zircon Sand!
Priced at $48,200 CAD/$39,950 USD.
In Canada, the Meridian trim comes loaded with a 7” LCD display, 10.25” display with Mazda Connect, wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto, a wireless charger, 360 view monitor, leather upholstery, heated and ventilated front seats, power driver and passenger seats, driver seat memory, heated steering wheel, Bose sound system, panoramic sunroof, heated rear seats and a power liftgate.
In the US, all of these features are not included on the Meridian model. This trim is missing the Bose sound system, a 360 view monitor, wireless charger, heated rear seats, ventilated front seats and a heating steering wheel. All are available on higher trims.
CX-50 turbo models can tow 3500 pounds. For fuel economy, it gets 10.4L/100km, 23 MPG city and 8.1L/100km, 29 MPG highway.

All those "rugged" trims are money makers for carmakers. Subaru Wilderness and Toyota Trail have to be the benchmark in the industry. That's why Mazda has to come out with this Meridian trim on CX-50. Even though most consumer's definition of "off road" is speed bumps on the entrance to Costco. They still want to look rugged and tough

AWD is also nothing but a gimmick. FWD with winter tires is more then enough for city. If you live in the middle of nowhere or country then AWD matters.

I have to disagree. If you live in the Midwest in U.S. you live through many’s snow storms. I’ve driven my daily work commute in cars with FWD with good snow/rain rated All-Season tires, and in cars with AWD with same All-season tires, and you have better control with the AWD hands down. The tires on this Mazda are too rugged for my liking.

After hearing you mention the touchscreen while driving hack, I came across a video showing how to do this on a CX-60. The person went into settings, then connectivity settings, then Bluetooth Iphone connectivity settings, and then under “device(s)” select iPhone, and then you scroll down to the bottom to a check box “Touchscreen in Motion for all devices.” I’m so glad you mentioned this because my wife has been driving a 2018 x1 with Apple CarPlay that has both the dial and touchscreen. She loves the Mazda’s but refuses to go backwards with it not not having the touchscreen. You may have just put us in the market for a new Mazda! 🎉

Solid video...thanks! Just ordered a 2024 Mazda CX-50 Premium Plus Turbo AWD...Zircon Sand/terracotta. Test drove it twice. On the second test drive, the salesman and I got lit up (cop pulled us over). Hahaaa. No dealer tag or something...let us go. IMHO (FWIW) a lot of bang for your buck vs forking out $20-40K more for a Porsche Macan or BMW X3.

That's one of my favorite interior color combo's! I had a 2014 Volvo S60 with a very similar interior. I think they called it Beachwood....how ever the seats in that car were crazy comfortable....the best iv'e ever had even when compared to my new Volvos....But back to this Mazda....this style of this and the pano roof make this the clear winner for me in the Mazda line up if you don't need a third row. I love how the CX-50 and that was the reason I test drove two times, but at the end, I sit inside the car, a quiet cabin and comfort seat win for me.

I liked your review very much. I was disappointed in some very important details you left out. I own a 2023 CX-50. I traded in a CX-5 for the 50. I will list things that really highlight the CX-50: 1. Seating- I think the seating is more comfortable then the the CX-5. You are comfortably up on the steering wheel. Your arms and eyes see and control everything The seats give a very secure and comfort feeling to the driving 2. Accident Avoidance Maneuver: The CX-50 leaves ALL competition behind in this area. I lost count after 6 direct potential collisions were avoided by CX-50 because of it's quick sports car reaction to steering around the other drivers errors. I thought the CX-5 was good but CX-50 is in another league. The author stated the heavy steering effort has its detractors. I strongly disagree. The heavy feel steering and suspension work in perfect harmony with each other. A Audi driver would highly approve of this type handling arrangement. 3. Linear Brake Pressure and Brakes: The first thing I noticed on approaching the first CX-50 I saw were the very large disc brakes. The linear break pressure is solid from the top of the breaking application and never gets soft no matter how hard you break. The soft linear pressure of the CX-5 of no brakes at the top of braking application to hard engagement at the bottom of the brake travel left one unsecure how the vehicle was going to respond in an emergency. Not with the CX-50! The cat like reflexes of the steering, suspension and world class stopping power of the braking system make this car a class leader in its segment. Finally what I like about Mazda is that they listen. I was contacted 3 times by the factory to hear of my owner driving experience while I owned my CX-5 and I have been contacted once so far with the CX-50.

I like the analog cluster dials, as long as they tell you what you need to know, and they age better. Full LCD/tft/ or whatever screens some use age horribly, and look chintzy. Even screen tech ages so fast. LCD? TFT? What? No OLED? MUST have OLED HDR screen! Some of the screens look horrible in some of the Hyundai's. In a few years, the graphics will look so outdated, it'll feel like I'm staring at a TI83 calculator. As long as they can make analog dials look like a hand crafted clock it'll age far better. If you think analog looks dated, try looking at a car that had a digital dash cluster from 5-10 years ago. It'll look ancient. Because of the screen tech, graphic tech, or design, they hardly ever age well. In some older Lexus, they'll use a digital dash to display an analog dial which seems to age well.

I feel you're right. Though LCD screens look nice at first, they age real fast. A year or so down the road, they look pretty bland or cheap. This might be an odd comparison but my uncles old Aston gauges, I believe its an DB9, the gauges look like titanium with crystal dials and buttons. The only screens I remember are two little lcds that show miles or "please service". I know that's a different class of car but the gauges look good today for a 10+ year old car.

I don't know what screen tech it is, if its TN, VA, or IPS, or something else entirely. But the graphics look fine for now, but I did see the "fake carbon" which I just laughed. Though most interior carbon is fake anyway, unless its something like a boutique car. Those dashboard graphics will age like milk.

I've had the CX-50 for almost 4 months and I'm very happy with it. I test drove a CX-50 Premium Plus with leather seats, and I like the cloth seats in the Preferred Plus more. Over the past several months I've come to feel that the CX-50 is aimed more at the car based crossovers, like the Subaru Outback, hence the lower stance. And Andrea, congratulations on learning to pronounce Mazda like an American. Meanwhile I pronounce (Kia) Sportage like a Canadian. I went to sleep away camp in Algonquin Park, Ontario back in 1975/1976, and so I pronounce Sportage like portage.

For the middle display, There is an option to have a digital speed display instead of the "analog" speedometer type . I use that on my CX50 GS-L model. There are 4 display modes toggled through using the INFO button on the steering wheel. What was displayed in the video is the 1st (basic display) mode. I use the 4th option (i-ACTIVESENSE display)

Drove a CX-50 today. Feels quite a bit different than the 5. Pros: less body roll and more control in corners. Transmission tuning is more responsive and avoids some of the sluggish ranges you get into with the 5. Cons: seats are much more firm. Different: brake pedal needs to be pressed harder, steering ratios are different depending on the speed you're driving. There's a clear difference in the dead center, with the 50's being more pronounced/wider I think. Despite the same engine and transmission, the car sounds different. I found that interesting. Ride quality felt comparable, with the 17" wheels on each. Maybe the 50 felt slightly tightened up, but not by much. There wasn't anything about visibility out of the 50 that stood out to me after driving the 5 for 6 years. I felt that the 50 was quiet, save for the wind noise coming from the sunroof (closed). I would personally save the money from that option since I don't tend to use them much. Subjectively, the door closing is less solid vs the 5 and shows some vibration on the outside door panel, especially on the rear doors. Yes, my CX-5 was made in Japan. The CX-50 was made in the USA. However it's in the new Toyota/Mazda production plant that *should* be up to the same standards. I'm currently stuck deciding if I should take a risk with these seats being so firm. Otherwise I liked the car.

@@matsudakodo I prefer the seats of the 50. Both are too firm for my preference but I noticed the seats were longer on the 50 vs the 5. Female passagners may prefer the 50 because of their wider hips. But it is all based on preferences. Yes both cars are different and I love that so each can find their own. I prefer the 50 but that is me and I came from a Kia soule which had a much wider dash and interior so it suited me.

This might just be Mazda’s best offering… might. From the side it looks like a RAV4, from the back (with those lights) it looks ‘some kind of premium car company’ … though I can’t place which, from the front it looks like literally every Mazda. I’m glad Mazda is still a contender in almost every category, within this class. The size, interior options and price make it very competitive. I love the terracotta interior and Mazda’s ‘one step above’ fit and finish. You’d be crazy not to shortlist this if it is the right size for you/your family. I certainly would consider it. I'll take the analogue cluster over a lcd screen for the drive information any day. I need something that I won't have to worry about going bad 3 years down the road. I have a 2018 Mazda CX-5 and right around the two year mark my info screen would occasionally start doing weird things. It turns out a lot of Mazda owners also had this problem where it looks like someone has taken over the control knob and is just shifting through random menus on the infotainment screen and turning things off and on. It's really annoying. Online, there have been several articles calling it "ghost touching". So for those of us who didn't run in right away to have it fixed under the three year warranty, Mazda dealers want $1,200.00 to replace the screen. I've seen Mazda owners on KZread literally just take the screen apart and cut the ribbon to the touch function and that solves the problem, except you can't use it as a touch screen anymore. The point is this: if Mazda couldn't do a proper screen in 2018, I don't trust them to do one now, and I need to be able to see the type of information that comes on those analogue clusters.
