2023 Mazda CX-50 First Drive | Mazda's New Small SUV is NOT Just Another CX-5 | Price, Interior

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

The Mazda CX-50 is an all-new compact SUV that, while similar in size, is not replacing the popular CX-5. In this video, Mark Takahashi from Edmunds gets behind the wheel of the 2023 Mazda CX-50 for the first time and talks about everything you need to know about Mazda's newest small SUV. With a more rugged look and impressive performance, the new CX-50 distinguishes itself from the CX-5 by coming standard with all-wheel drive and having the intent to go anywhere and do everything. Mark talks about how this compact SUV handles on- and off-road, as well as taking a peek at the interior and cargo space. How does the new Mazda CX-50 compare to its big sibling, the CX-5, and other off-road-oriented AWD SUV offerings like the Subaru Outback and Forester? Mark's got all these questions covered and more! This is our First Drive of the 2023 Mazda CX-50.

@@PrestenSPapel Funny you bring up the RDX. The cx 50 is a nice vehicle but it's not as roomy or as powerful as the RDX not too mention the handling if you get the sh-awd option. The Mazda's interior is also so bland and plain also Honda as you know is the premium brand of Acura so the quality is there. As for Mazda they have gotten better since collaborating with Toyota. I would personally choose the Acura over the Mazda but that's just my personal preference and is the reason I didn't buy the cx 50.

Before choosing a CX50 you should consider the following: 1. The GT’s 20” rims and standard Goodyears (Canada) cannot be considered an off-road tire. Hopefully it works in winter but you don’t have much tread depth. 2. This is no competitor to a Subaru product as there is no suspension travel, little ground clearance and a metric tonne-load of plastic under the Mazda (can you find the oil filter DIY’s) 3. Fussy interior: Beautiful sure but it marks so easily and that surface around the shifter is hard to clean and scratches so easily. 4. How do you clean the heads-up display that sits in the well in the dash and do you find the display in the glass distorted or clear? 5. Don’t count on great mileage and oil change intervals seem to be more frequent. 6. Body: so many crevices to trap sand and salt over winter = early rust potential? Just wondering (had literally miles of weather strip components) 7. Rear storage: Disappointing! The problem is the roof height. If you travel with small family consider bringing empty luggage to the dealership. You may find a CX5 works better as luggage can stand vertically back to back. Try it! 8. Purchase experience: Maybe this is happening every where but freight and PDI seems greatly inflated and acting like a surcharge. 9. Ergonomics: Not bad. Glad to see some buttons but the stitching on the steering wheel isn’t smooth, spokes are awkward and grip width at the 9 and 3 position aren’t good. You might agree after 500 miles. 10. Seats. Be sure you are ok with the Mazda designed butt-floss. This is weird and should be changed mid-production. Seats are hard. 11. Look hard at the CX5 before you buy the 50.

Just test drove this vehicle. They’re hard to find so I was lucky I found one at a nearby Mazda dealership. After watching this review I was determined to find one and purchase it. Msrp was $39,000 for premium package.Dealer had it for $41,380 with destination fee ,with an additional $3,000 mark up.Total out the door price came out to $49,995 with taxes ,reg, doc fees. Talked them down to $47,500. Had too make this deal before I even test drove the vehicle. They wouldn’t let me test drive it otherwise. After test driving it I backed out of the deal, in my opinion it’s not a $47,000+ vehicle. Acceleration was ok,ride was a little ruff and the vehicle felt heavy, handling was above average but not anything special. Best thing for me was the Bose audio system which sounds amazing !! Yes it’s a beautiful suv…but for the right price, definitely not for $47,500. If you’re in the market for this suv don’t over pay for it especially if your financing it. Tops I would pay for this suv is around $44,000-45,000 out the door.

I ordered a CX-5 Signature and I was awaiting reviews on the CX-50 to validate my choice. I live in the city, and the extra width without commensurate extra space in the CX-50 would be a hindrance, and although I appreciate good handling, I think I'd prefer the smoother and quieter option. I was also wondering what the ride quality would be like. I had an Outback XT and it was so comfortable. What made me sell it was the infotainment was terrible. I test drove the 2021 CX5 Signature and found it to not be as comfortable as the Outback XT, but it was fun to drive. I'm hoping the CX-50 would make it a little less top heavy since it's shorter and wider, but I agree about the parking in the city aspect of the width. I'm currently considering the CX-50/CX-5 and the Honda Passport. Any experience with Hondas?

@@racso5628 I'm not sure if you're asking me about Hondas, but I'll answer anyway. :) I had a 2019 CX-5 before and after it was damaged, I swapped to a 2021 Honda Accord Touring. The driving characteristics were wonderful, but it had some rattles the dealership couldn't fix and experienced a lot of road noise which definitely made it feel cheaper. Overall, it felt like a class down from the CX-5 and Mazda6 I had before it. Plus, the Accord's CMBS slammed on the brakes on me twice at highway speeds, both times nearly causing me an accident, where the brake pedal wouldn't release from its lock when I tried to intervene since it prematurely activated. To me, a premium feel is important, so you should try out the Passport to see if it meets expectations!

I picked up my new CX-50 last Thursday. Before that I had a CX-5 (traded it in for this). Yes, the CX-50 is wider but to be fair, it is actually about the same. Reason is that the CX-50 has mirrors set in from the widest point of the body while the CX-5 has mirrors which stick out more. The Premium Plus Turbo trim has 360 surround cameras which make parking and tight spaces easier to navigate than the CX-5 at least for me. I honestly can not tell any difference between the ride quality/noise in the two. Main difference on sound is that the CX-50 has a truly awesome Bose sound system with is the best I've ever heard in any car. Ever.

Mo - I picked up my new CX-50 last Thursday. I am not at all bothered by the stitching. To my ear (and I do not have very good hearing) I don't notice any difference between the CX-5 and the CX-50. Perhaps the CX-50 is a touch quieter than the 2017 CX-5 I traded in for it. What I DO hear a difference on is the fantastic Bose sound system. Easily the best sound quality I've heard in any car. Ever. The one thing which does annoy me is that (and you can see this in the video when off roading) Mazda's design is such that LOTS of dust is thrown up on the back and completely covers the rear window whenever you go several miles on gravel or dry dirt roads.

@@michaelp.3485 - I am not sure exactly what piece of information I wrote that you don't believe. If you read my entire post you would notice that I spoke about both some positive and negative issues. You are correct that people are biased. Not only owners are biased; people who have driven or owned other Mazdas and know how reliable and fun to drive they are in general would be biased towards the brand. People who haven't owned or driven a Mazda might also be biased AGAINST any Mazda. I have written on other KZread videos that I suspect the Subaru all wheel drive system might well be superior to Mazda's AWD (Subaru has had many more years to perfect their system) and I've also mentioned some aspects of the CX-5 which I feel are better than the CX-50. So if you don't think you can trust my experience, why not just go and drive one for yourself? Almost any car has both people who enjoy it and other people who don't like it. Much of that can be subjective, especially which elements of a car are important to you. If cargo space or gas mileage are more important than driving experience or interior design to someone, then Honda's CR-V might be a much better choice than a Mazda CX-50. Everyone should use their own judgement. I simply wrote what I had found to be true from my own driving experience.

Lena - Yes, the CX-50 does have current tire pressure readings for the 4 independent tires within the center display (not on the dash but in the digital display in front of the driver). No need to trash Mazda; they did an excellent job with most of the useful modern tech (like 360 surround sensors and even rear/reverse auto braking when backing up plus of course standards like head up display shown in front of the driver, adaptive cruise control, Blind spot monitoring, etc.).

@@solitarysky734 it's incredible you think I'm "trashing Mazda" just because I mentioned facts that they didn't have tire pressure readings for each tire available on the dash. It's something myself and many, many others have talked about wanting in our modern Mazdas.

@@LenaCourtney - Today I did a more extensive check of your interest in the CX-50 related to tire pressure. First, it is important to note that Mazda now offers its "My Mazda" app which, at least with the CX-50, allows you to remotely view your tire pressure (all four tires are shown independently). In car this info is also shown on the dash display under the "Maintenence" tab. Hope this helps.

They dont have much of an R&D budget to really compete in that realm. Waiting until others do the initial investment and costs come down will benefit them as their annual volume likely isnt impacted much in the interim.

I just bought the 2023 CX-50. I found the CX-5 a little boring…. To me when the ride is softer and quieter it becomes boring. I don’t want to drive a Lazyboy chair. In the past I have had 2 BMW X3’s. This SUV is not that far off the mark without having to pay 50k+. This SUV just puts a smile on my face.

Stubborn Mazda forgot to put the amazing torsion beam rear suspensions to the CX50 to keep road noise down. Oh, also it is like the older Oldsmobile that the headlight is always on like people drive with high beam on because they don't know how to work the car.
