I'm biased, as someone who learned to play disc golf in the woods of New England, but this is my favorite course that I've seen on tour so far this year. Could stand to tone back on the artificial OB, especially on the wooded holes, but the setting is top notch and as a viewer I enjoy watching demanding-yet-fair courses that will punish you over watching birdie sprints. I'm sure this course is far less fun to play than it is to watch but I hope the Tour continues to come back here and iterate on the course as feedback comes in.

I was there for collegiate nationals last weekend, and it is actually a blast to play (as long as you don’t worry too much about your score lol). It is very demanding distance-wise but if you have it there’s some great shots. The only really bad thing about the course are the trees directly off the tee on 5 and 18. They don’t add anything to the holes other than making the tee shot really awkward. If the tees were just 20 feet back on either hole it would keep the difficulty without making you throw off the very corner of the tee with awkward footing.

I completely agree! All the way through to hole 15 I was thinking "this is my new favorite course on tour and it needs to be an elite series event". BUT then the last holes got ridiculous. I actually liked the artificial OB on the rest of the course. It added difficulty and was fun to watch but wasn't absurd. The last holes, however, were just silly.

I dont see how this matches with the regular disc golf experience. We don't typically play courses with OB inside the circle on half the greens or weirdly shaped fairways defined completely by OB that then proceed to a drop zone at the end of the landing area. Love the woods, love the moutains. I think the OB ends up making for weird disc golf.

I played this course last year and this year for the college national championship. I think the OB needs changed/relaxed in some areas for singles play. It works so well for the college team format because you can play safe and aggressive on every shot. Really lets this course shine tbh. But some holes like 5 just become too easy double bogeys off good shots that just go OB early and never come back. Small tweaks could make this course on the the best on the planet in my opinion

  • @EricCalhoun

I've played Boulders course and think it absolutely deserves to be in the UDisc Top 100... the OB and the application of OB rules feels pretty gimmicky here, there doesn't seem to be a lot of logic to when you go to a drop zone, when you have to re-throw etc. In a lot of ways I'd like it more if the OB was generally "play it where it goes out" OB, but the counter argument is that skying a shot over a tight green and landing 70' away, then getting a par putt from 25' because you crossed the green's airspace cheapens the idea of the tight green. Lol they need a special rule where hitting the ground in bounds gets you the close putt but airspace doesn't... but mostly I want how you play after the OB to feel consistent and logical. I think the course works best when the devastation it brings to scorecards is from the elevation, river, & natural feature OB, less a fan of "flags in a field" OB. There is value in having courses where par is hard, and the hot round is -7 instead of -15

To answer the question posed on commentary, I love watching the pros play really tough wooded courses like this with tight OB lines and a great variety of lines required. The pin placements were really tough too, which is great because you see the best in the world have to choose to go for it or lay up. I would say the island greens could do without the OB lines though. This course is my favorite course to watch so far this year. Absolutely gorgeous, great layout, and very interesting greens.

@29:00 YES, this course is SUPER cool. Tight technical lines, you're punished if you're not careful, but can also earn HUGE rewards if you decide gamble and go BIG. I LOVE IT. More courses like this is definitely needed. It really challenges the players and it's not just who has the "biggest arm". I'd rather watch technical shots any day over the typical distance contest we usually see.

I like the tight lines and tight gaps when they are the birdie or eagle options, along with a more open par option, so players can pick the holes they can/want to score on. I do like the tight greens, it feels very pro-level. That being said the OB lines on this particular course are particularly punitive and favor the lucky, not the skilled. Natural tight greens are better than artificially tight greens.

This has been my favorite course to watch for a few reasons. First, I just haven't seen it before, so it's fun to see a course for the first time. Second, it's extremely picturesque, more so than most courses on the tour. Third, it seems like one of if not the most challenging course on the tour, and I love seeing pros try to meet that challenge. Maybe a bit of the OB can be a bit relaxed, but overall the OB lines just follow some sort of paved path or water, so it wasn't unclear where in bounds was while watching (and presumably while playing. Making sure watchers and players can recognize where inbounds is at all times is tricky and often not accomplished by other OB heavy course such as USDGC and the first OTB Open. Maybe some of the OB around the circle could be a tad relaxed, and some dropzones moved toward the pin more, but I think being more aggressive and then relaxing it for next year better than being more relaxed and then getting more aggressive next year with the OB.

Love this course. Played it twice and had no hope of being less than double digits both times. It's so rewarding to see the pros have to break down the course and actually employ strategy to get a par. I'd love to see it make the cut for an elite series in the future because I think it has the necessary toughness and beauty to hold up year after year as a place people wanna see the pros have to tackle or be tackled on.

You asked for feedback so: This is one of the best watches of the year. What a course! Sure, maybe tweak a bit of the stakes and strings, but the natural setting and some of the natural OB around the greens is both beautiful and mandates a risk/reward calculus on far more shots than the average tour stop. What a watch. More of this, please, DGPT.

I'm from Michigan, now living in Rhode Island. Personally I like tight technical course that weave through the woods, that have some big holes that allow you to disc up and go full power. Guardian trees making access to the green more challenging is entertaining, ad if you make the gap you should be rewarded with an unobstructed putt.

I love watching this course! it's a great combination of tight woods golf and punishing OB. The OB lines seem natural, not contrived like on many long golf courses. The drop zones are a great way to let players play very aggressively without being heavily punished for it. Highly challenging, obviously, but this feels like a challenging pro-level course.

Watching the best players in the world play chip shots off the tee and layups is … boring. It’s not the the course is hard, it’s that they made the course hard using OB that arbitrarily punished shots. It’s a shame because that kind of course, that shows beautifully on film and forces shots shaping is something that’s really nice to see on the tour.

@@garyadams4689 Well, this course was designed by Andrew Duvall, who designs Winthrop Gold for USDGC each year. That's the influence we are seeing here, I just don't think it fits well or is necessary on this property. The Pro Tour is still trying to figure out how to optimize for spectators, live video and interesting, challenging courses. I hope they eventually get it right, but that's the main reason we are seeing so much OB on tour, because it challenges the pros while allowing clear sight lines for lots of spectators.

The course is beautiful but the OB is excessive. You don't need that much OB on a wooded course with natural water OB. It's not for safety, and too many drop zones rob us/players of interesting scramble opportunities. I don't mind obstructions in the circle, but I don't like OB in the circle. Then some holes have a super punishing lack of DZ. Oh and all the elevated baskets are also completely unnecessary.

I love this course. It's beautiful. Players have to have multiple combinations to there abilities. The greens look tough with Rocks, Rivers or Terrain. Bonus, it looks like there is enough room for large galleries to follow cards.

Disc golf should be an obsession, not an OB session

I think it’s a cool course but some of the OB is a bit overkill. Also not sure how 18 isn’t a par 5…

really beautiful course, nobody commented on the magical bug/frog sounds on that one hole on back 9. I guess the course designers don't wanna make it too easy but Im def not a fan of lots of tight ob. At the end of the day If a few players show that it is possible then I suppose the course designers have made their point.

It's fun watching the super tough courses. I do think a few of the DZ rules are silly, esp hole 16. Calvin threw a pretty perfect drive there and got punished hard.

Nate you asked! So, hear it is in a nutshell. When I get my first million to buy property and build a course, and seek council from professional course designers, Duval will not be on that list!

Give me a shout! I'm a landscaper and disc golfer who lives on a course 30 min from north cove and they never even tried to offer any help with design or install

Great video guys. Beautiful course, awesome card. Thanks for having the score at the bottom, and for showing where the scores stand through a given hole vs the field. Best Disc Golf coverage available, would like to see Ian back on the mic!

Really like the course design, the tight OBs are brutal but as a viewer, unlike on some courses, it’s for the most part crystal clear what’s in and what’s out. Normalize par disc golf!
